iW'yh- I is i Mill 4 t'Mh HI By Jack Rannells Mexican national farm labor is an integral and essential part of Santa Cruz county'a $35 million agricultural industry, Tom Richardson, secretary of the farm labor committee of the State Farm Bureau federation, said yesterday. Without it, Richardson estimated there would be a 50 to 60 per cent drop in plantings of major hand labor crops. RichardsoA addressed a group of 81 in the Birds Eye processing plant cafeteria during the luncheon break of the Farm-City week tour. About 49 persons from Santa Cruz and Watsonville participated in tours of Brussels sprouts growing, harvesting and processing; a mushroom plant; and two commercial flower growing operations. The luncheon crowd was boosted by members of the Santa Cruz Kiwanis club.

The service club originated national Farm City week observance. Richardson told the assemblage, "It must be remembered that Mexican national labor is supplemental. But it is necessary. "If it were not available, cer- Traffic Hazard Abatement Sought On Voluntary Basis The mayor and city manager were requested last night to seek voluntary abatement of traffic hazards at High street area intersections. If no action is taken by property owners at eight critical situations listed by the traffic department, followup action by the city was recommended by the council.

Voluntary cooperation in controlling potentially obstructive trees and bushes will be sought in 10 other spots. The traffic department report indicated that various trees, stumps or bushes obstruct vision of motorists and constitute a hazard to pedestrians, motorists, or both. Councilman Ted Foster reaffirmed th council request that similar studies be conducted throughout Santa Cruz. Richardson used charts tacked to the cafeteria wall to demon strate the significance of import ed labor in aanta cruz county ag riculture. These showed that about 3200 nationals provided 68 per cent of the 1D59 peak labor force in the basic hand labor crops; green beans (1600 of 2000): strawber rics (800 of 1420); sprouts (350 of 500); lettuce (350 of 500): and miscellaneous vegetables (170 of 400).

These basic vegetable and strawberry crops accounted for about $15.6 million, or 43 per cent of the total agricultural income in the county during 1959. Touching briefly on orcaniza tion of farm labor by the AFL- tio, the farm bureau official said most contracts to date has been "set up" cases. Well, perhaps so. But tncre is something to be said for the comics, at that. They glorify right and condemn wrong, which is a point for their side. They are not sexy at least not compared to the illustrations in any popular magazine.

They make right win over wrong. Their heroes are always brave and resourceful, respectful to the old and chivalrous toward women. Maybe a kid could do worse than to pattern after them, at that. And the strips' interest is not confined to the young by any means, either. You take any group of 20 people in a coffee shop at breakfast and you'll find about 18 of them reading the comics.

These often inane serials of the drawing board are a part of contemporary American life and many worse influences could easily be imagined.
