HONORED GUESTS--at fair began Thursday at Brookside Mowrer, principal at Pottstown history teacher there; Mrs. Russell chapter regent. Mrs. Stevenson proposed for the honor by the Alan Sheppard. Mrs.

Wohltman of Alan DAR Side Issues of By ESTHER GRAY (Mercury Society Editor) "Side issues" of the United States first shot of a man into space were told to members of Mahanatawny chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, their guests at a luncheon Tuesday by Mrs. Russell P. Brewer, whose daughter Louise the wife of Comdr. Alan B. Shephard Jr.

Mr. and Mrs. Brewer, residents of Kennett Square, were with their daughter in Virginia Beach, when the shot was made and also were in the party when the astronauts were honored by President Kennedy and Commander Shephard received the Congressional medal of honor. She called her experiences "out of this world." Mrs. Brewer explained the first shot was postponed, not because of the weather but because the sea at the Grand Bahamas was much too for the capsule to survive.

"Not at any time have they done anything to jeopardize the lives of the men," she stated. She described the astronauts as a "fine group of men, all working very hard." Many wonder how they can take that long wait in the capsule before blastoff, Mrs. Brewcommented. "That is part of their training, they have spent hours in the capsule in that position. "It is almost unbelievable the training they went through and are still going through," she said emphatically.

The morning of the shoot, Mrs. Brewer recalled, reporters were on the lawn at 5 o'clock. There were policemen and police cars there for the DIE CASTERS' CLUB DANCE TO THE MUSIC OF THE NATURALS FRIDAY SATURDAY and SUNDAY FLOOR SHOW SUNDAY NIGHT Mahanatawny chapter, DAR, annual country club. Pictured left Northern Junior High school; P. Brewer, Kennett Square, received a Freedom's Foundation local DAR chapter.

Mrs. Brewer presented each with a DAR Shephard Tells First Space Trip family's protection. Mrs. Shep hard had been instructed to keep everyone indoors until her husband's ride through space was over, a precaution to avoid reporters' questions. When Mrs.

Shephard was notified the shot would be made, she asked where they were in the count down. She was toldand with watch and chart family kept pace with the men at Canaveral. They watched the flight on television and "everyone was very excited and it was very interesting," Mrs. Brewer said. Within a half hour the mayor arrived with a bouquet of flowers for Mrs.

Shephard. Within a day Commander Shephard was made honorary mayor of Virginia Beach, an honorary member of the Kiwanis club and plans were afoot to name a hall after him. The mail and messages came in tremendous volume. Mrs. Brewer told of a letter she opened from an eight year old boy.

"Dear Commander Shephard, you are a brave man and I admire you very much. Please send me your autograph, a picture and the capsule." In closing she showed color pictures of the blastoff, the capsule landing on the sea and a photograph of portrait of her son-in-law, ordered painted by Commander Shephard's class at Annapolis and hung in the United States Naval academy Saturday. Also a guest at the luncheon at Brookside country club, was Mrs. Elizabeth Stevenson, history teacher at Pottstown Northern Junior High school, who this year was recipient of a Freedom's Foundation award. William D.

Mower, principal of the school in ducing Mrs. Stevenson called her a "dedicated teacher" and said he was sorry more boys and girls can't be in her class. He said, "she is the best his. tory teacher I have ever known." Mrs. Stevenson thanked the chapter for nominating her for the Freedom's Foundation award and said she considers it the greatest honor ever bestowed upon her.

The teacher told how her safety patrol boys, whom she sponsors, were waiting to congratulate her, REGISTER YOUR CHILDREN FOR OWLS KIDDIES' CHRISTMAS PARTY FRIDAY (Oct. 6) 8 to 10 P.M. SATURDAY, Oct. 1 2 to 4 P.M. and 8 to 10 P.M.
