Saturday, November 1, 1980 WORLD, Coos Bay, 3 0 a Memories fond hut A valon looks to future bird Motor Inn in Coos Bay where he is staying during the filming of Premonitions. That exposure, he said, landed him a recording contract that produced two bombs in a row. He was thinking about quitting the recording business and going back to nightclubs when he decided to try one more record. That was Dee Dee Dinah and it was the first hit in a string of 15 top 10 hits and two number one records, including Venus. Soon he was a regular on the revered American Bandstand and started a senes of tours put together by rock roll impresario Alan Freed.

'Those were a lot of fun and a lot of work' says Avalon of old days fun-and-sun image of Southern California. Avalon made nine of those movies beginning in 1963. He said they were filmed in 15 days. To show how the business has changed, Avalon explained that his five-minute cameo appearance in Grease took 14 days of rehearsal and two 14-hour days of shooting. Between the beach movies and Grease Avalon sang in nightclubs and appeared on television.

He also started a family that would eventually number eight children. The oldest is now 17 and beginning to think of a career of his own in the entertainment business. He works six months out of every year and has started a movie production company in Los Angeles, his home for the last 20 years. He said there was no real revival in the 1970s of the rock roll era "because it never died. Its just happening all over again.

He likes todays music, feels there are a lot of different types of sounds available and the public has more choices. When concert producers began putting together some of the old Alan Freed-type shows Avalon refused to participate. I thought I just couldn't go out on stage and sing all those old songs and then just walk off, he said. Many of those old songs, he explained, are in his current stage show, but he does them tongue-in-cheek. Avalon landed the job on Premonitions when Lenny Montana, executive producer, writer and one of the stars of the movie, saw him on an episode of Fantasy Island.

"They felt they wanted someone like me, who was different, to play a killer, he said. Joining Avalon and Montana in the ByTOMTOWSLEE Staff Writer In talking with Frankie Avalon its easy to slip back into the nostalgia of the 1950s, the heyday of rock roll that made him a household name. Hes changed very little in the 23 years since he set teen-age hearts throbbing with his hit Venus or when he frugged and twisted the summers away with Annette Funicello in a series of beach blanket movies. Avalon is in Coos Bay for the next three weeks to film the feature movie "Premonitions, in which, believe it or not, he plays the heavy. The part is a far cry from his days as a rock roll star and demonstrates his ability to keep working in a business that discards old stars like old shoes.

He has fond memories of the old days, but doesnt dwell on them. Hes kept up his career singing in Las Vegas' and in nightclubs around the nation, breaking that up with occasional appearances in movies and on television. Avalon, 40, admits that when he is 60 years old hell still be getting questions about those early days of rock roll. Theyll never leave me, he said. Those days left their mark and they gave a lot of people a lot of good times.

Avalon hails from South Philadelphia, an area that produced such early rock idols as Fabian, Bobby Riddell and James Darren. It was also home for Dick Clark and American Bandstand, then a half-hour show every weekday afternoon and a major force in that eras music. The year 1957 found Avalon, then 17, singing in a nightclub not much different from the lounge at the Thunder- Those were a lot of fun and a lot of work, he said. It was 80 one-nighters in a row but we didnt know any better. During those years Avalon visited one radio statical after another, promoting his newest release and getting the all-important exposure to the teen-age record-buying public.

In 1959 he made his first movie, Guns of the Timberland with Alan Ladd. He followed that up with The Alamo" in which, at 19, he played an eager-beaver 14-year-old. The star of The Alamo was John Wayne. The Duke told me Ill always look younger than I am and some day it will work for me, Avalon said. Next came the beach movies as Hollywood began cashing in on the Frankie Avalon and Jennifer Enskat take time out world photo by Tom towsIm.

film are Jennifer Enskat, Avalons lover in the movie, and Will Cullen. Avalon explained that many of the singing stars of 20 years ago havent been as fortunate as he is. They got lost on the switch from 45s to albums and in the growth of popularity in groups using electrical instruments. "Ive managed to survive, he said, with planning, dedication and learning all the new elements of the business and keep growing. People in America are still starving, Manley pointed out, but added, We ship 68 percent of our food supply away A change in these exports could be legislated, he noted. Another example could be CAP participation in or assistance in organizing a worker's cooperative to keep a lumber mill running, such as the cooperative in Lane County at Westfir, Manley said.

CAP has already been given a grant to help organize a statewide energy advocacy group for the next Oregon legislative session. Another way CAP plans to viding services to out-of-work or impoverished residents more responsive, more humane. Consciousness-raising will be another CAP effort this year. Getting poor people to realize they can have control over their own lives. CAP can also try to channel economic development grants from the CSA, Manley said.

In terms of emergency assistance, CAP will once again provide energy supplies and will run a food program, Manley explained. W1 CAP expects to receive about 3240,000 in Community Services Administration funding tiiis coming year, once grant reviews are completed on the local level. Recently the CAP board discussed priorities for the new year and placed health care at the top of the list. Basic health care costs are rising rapidly, Manley noted, adding, The options to poor people are getting constantly hardertouse. But clearly, Manley said, "people need employment and housing, too.

The unpacts of the current economic situation in these two areas bring more and more people to the agency for referrals, Manley hoted, pointing to mental health assistance, alcohol assistance and family counseling assistance people seek through his agency. CAP will also attempt to help people find jobs or work with other agencies to do so. It can do ths directly, or it can help people lobby for changes in society to address these problems, Manley said. ID-9 SCHOOL BOARD SAYS: By LINDA MEIER JURGEN Staff Writer Bad economic times on the South Coast also hit agencies. One example is the new years work for Community Action Programs Inc.

The top two efforts will be for providing the basics such as food, clothing and shelter and a new emphasis on getting and paying for health care for the poor. Director Jeff Manley said, We think as times get worse, more and more people are beginning to wonder where the next meal will come from, how to put shoes on the kids feet how to pay those medical bills. CAP needs to come up with some answers. The irony in tnis returned emphasis on survival needs is federal red tape that sets standards for jurt how poor you have to be before you can qualify for assistance from the agency, Manley explained. For instance, a family of four cant be making more than 36,700 a year if they want to get help from CAP, Manley explained, adding, That family cant even live on that, but thats what the federal government has chosen.

That doesnt mean the agency cant offer help to the low-income and particularly the out-of-work, Manley is quick to point out. Its largest role is in advocacy for programs to help these members of the community and in providing the expertise necessary to help foiks organize themselves" to find answers to these social issues. Susan Meltzer, who earned petitions and is a client of Huesmkvelds, asked if residents would still have their say at the postponed hearing. Attorney Robert Thomas assured her they would.

Another resident, Sargent Webster, told the council the proposed project would make an island of his one-acre site, leaving it surrounded by the city on all sides. Webster said he had never been notified of the proposal. He asked the council if his property could be annexed without his consent. Thomas said under Oregon law, if it truly was surrounded on all sides, the council could annex it without his consent, or just leave it alone. The new council hearing on the proposal will be Jan.

27, but the planning commission is expected to review new plans prior to that date. Also this week, the Coos Bay Council decided it didnt want to fight inclusion of the 110 acres within the North Bend urban growth boundary. A seven-acre annexation hearing has been postponed for 60 days in North Bend until officials can hear future plans for the full 110-acre chunk of county lands adjacent to the citys western edge. At a meeting this week, George Lavios, representing Mr. and Mrs.

Frederick Perry who wanted to annex the property and use it for multi-family residences, asked that the request be withdrawn and reconsidered when he and others can come back to the planning commission with plans for the entire area. The council consented to the delay and to returning the request for planning commission review. Attorney Lynn Huesinkveld presented petitions with signatures of 127 residents surrounding the area objecting to use of the property for multi-family homes. Huesinkveld pointed out that there were three tests for multi-family use in the citys comprehensive plan. The plan says such housing will be allowed in areas where housing is already mixed, where it is adjacent to commercial uses and where there is good traffic circulation.

The attorney said the area in question was far from a Paid by Coos County Coalition, Bruce Smith, Treasurer, 455 4th Coos Bay commercial area, that access to the development was only on a quiet residential street (13th Street) and that the surrounding neighborhood was all single-family residential.
