aced 2s FINANCIAL The Stock Market Kntln the Old Year Very Strong and Active. On Thursday the hulls took possession of the stock market at the opening, and continued In control throughout the day, very-small fractional recessions alone Interrupting a steady advance of prices. Bear operators and those who had sold earlier in the week for the purpose of securing profits, were forced to cover from the start and they wore kept at it pretty welt all day. Now and then they would attempt to depress prices by offering certain stocks down, hut the Buying power was more than equal to the occasion, and another rush to cover invariably followed. The Vanderbilts, grangers, Louisville, Northern Pacific preferred, Richmond Terminal, New England, Atchison and Iowa Central were all strong features of the morning's trading, followed closely by the coalers, while the low-priced stocks were not only active, but showed a disposition to even exceed the advances of their more costly leaders.

It was expected that the upward movement would close at noon, when prices were at their best, but such was not the case and the public generally, and Wall slreot in particular, were treated to a further surprise by the continued advances made by the list, though thevolumeof business diminished somewhat, This was particularly the case In Missouri Pacific, where last week's movement was taken up by last week's manipulators, and In Richmond Terminal, the news on which was that the Georgia Central managers had yielded to the demands of the Terminal managers, and put up tho collateral demanded, and would be allowed to pay their dividend. The activity in the general market towards the last was most unusual, and marked the year's end with an emphatic demonstration of strength. The range of New York stocks was as fol lows HOFLZLK. Surldcnly, on December 30, JOHN F. HOKL-LE, aed JW years.
