1 Page 14-THE WORLD, Coos Bay, Thursday, March 18, 1978 Crane Union High students live on campus at Burns in the small community of Crane that are leased to district 1 employes. Theday for the students at Crane begins at 6:30 a.m. when an alarm soumla in the two-story dormitory where 45 young men and 41 young women live. Breakfast is at 7 a.m. and classes begin at 8:05 a.m.

There is an hour break at 11:40 a.m. for lunch before classes resume and continue until 3:45 p.m. Sports, extracurricular activities and free time occupy the time until dinner at 5:30 p.m. The students have to go to their separate dormitory floors at 9 p.m. and room lights must be out at 10 p.m.

Study lights may stay on until 11 pm. John and Bertha Robinson, who are patron and matron of the coed dormitory, serve as father and mother stand-ins to the students while they are away from home. Crane High School was organised In 1918 at nearby Lnwen and moved to Crane two years later. There were nine students at first. A boys dormitory was built between 1928 and 1931 and the girls dormitory added in the 1940s.

A fire destroyed the combined elementary and high school building Jan. 25, 1967. Classes continued in another building in the community until a new school of steel construction was completed, Although the town of Crane has dwindled from about 300 residents between 1927 and 1931 to a dof on the map today, the school has continued to prosper. Some of the students live as far as 200 miles away from the school. Most go home on weekends although a few do not see their families for several months at a time because of extra-curicular activities.

The boarding school is consi liered a way of life to people in this arid region, and it also provides housing for faculty members and staff both on and off campus. Thome is 45 and superintendent-principal at Crane Union High School. His oldest son, now 21, graduated from Crane and his six-year-old son is in the first grade. Thome lives in a big two-story, white-frame house on the school grounds which once served as a railroad depot and a hotel. A duplex and triplex also are on the campus.

In addition the school district owns eight single-family dwellings BY JAMES FLANIGAN BURNS (UP1) The only local public school district supported high school in the United States where students live on campus during the week is located on a patch of isolated desert 30 miles southeast of Burns in eastern Oregon. And that includes Alaska and Hawaii," says Crane Union High School Administrator Maurice Thome The school district serves avast area of 7,233 square miles. Most of the 99 students enrolled in the high school live in a modem dormitory building across from the school. Crane Union High School provides an education for young people who live on the ranches and farms in most of rural Harney County and part of Humboldt County in Nevada.
