COOK That traditional symbol of New Year the bearded old man handing the world over to a bright-eyed babe in diapers isn't going to be good for many more years. Not if we can believe our scientists. Because it won't be long, as history measures time, before there just won't be any new babes around to take over the earth. And there won't be any old men, either.

There won't be anybody, period. The dawn of a new decade is probably as good a time as any to pass on the warnings of more and more scientists around the world: unless we do something and quickly man's days on this battered old earth are numbered. Within the next couple of hundred years, they say, he will either choke to death or die of starvation. One European biologist is even more pessimistic. He says flatly we have "between 35 and 100 years before the end of the earth." Never mind worrying about the war in Vietnam or race riots or crime in the streets.

If these fellows are right, pretty soon tihere won't be anybody around to burn a draft card loot a store or mug you on your way AFTERNOON TEA A reader request prompts us to repeat this recipe for a favorite Greek cookie. 526 Cumberland St. 272-7666 home from the office. These are not "gloom and doom" kooks talking or sheet-clad men who walk around predicting "the end of the world will come tomorrow." These are men of science, trained in the fields of medicine, anthropology, biology, genetics, geography, ecology and conservation. More and more they are beginning to speak out with what they call "a sense of impending tragedy." Ana they all agree that man is tripping down the path to oblivion because of the population explosion, air and water pollution, famine, war and pestilence. Take the high birth rate.

Social critics have predicted for years that millions of people will be starving before the year 2000 if population growth keeps on. There will be, they guess, a billion more people in the world in the next 10 years, and four billion more in 30. And the way we are ravaging the Earth, they say, there just won't be enough food to keep all those people alive. Industrial and human wastes are fouling up our rivers and lakes and killing the fish. Chemicals and the estimated ton of plastic, paper and metal every person in this country discards each year are choking us to death.

Then there's the world-wide problem of air 11 i People and engines aod fires of all sorts are using up oxygen at a near-fatal rate. But 'we keep cutting down the forests that convert carbon dioxide to oxygen. Smog is killing much of the rest. And there are those who will tell you DDT may be exterminating tiny organisms in the ocean, wiping out another source of oxygen and food. One of these days, according to one scientist, suddenly "the world's billions of creatures may literally be struggling for a last breath." If strangulation or starvation doesn't do it first, it could be drowning.

All that carbon dioxide in the air, that "hot smog," could, in the opinion of some scientists, eventually melt the polar ice and flood the coasts of all the continents. Forecasts like this have jostled some folks in the United Nations to propose a world conference in Stockholm in 1972 to study how "people can be checked before man exterminates himself. In 1972? Gee, what's the hurry, fellows? You And Your Child Medical News Notes On Feedings At Night By JOAN BECK MEDICAL NEWS notes for parents: At what age does a baby first begin to sleep thru the night without a feeding? Will he start skipping that bleary 2 a.m. feeding sooner if you introduce semi-solid foods early in his life? Altho it may seem like half of eternity to a weary, new mother and father, a baby can be gently nudged into going without food for an 8-hour nightly stretch by the median age of weeks. Parents of girl babies get slightly more sleep than those of boys.

Half of all girls are sleeping that crucial 8-hour span at Vfa weeks of age; half of all boys by weeks. These age levels come from a report in Pediatrics magazine by Dr. Virginia A. Beal, Child Research council, University of Colorado School of Medicine. A lucky 12 per cent of parents bring home from the hospital an infant who has already dropped one nighttime feeding, says Dr.

Beal. All but 3 per cent of babies have skipped that 2 a.m. feeding by the age of 4 months. But for these few, extra-demanding infants, midnight feedings can last until ages ranging from 8 to 15 months. It doesn't make much difference whether you nurse your infant or give him a bottle as far as being able to stop that 2 a.m.

feeding, Dr. Bears study shows. But there does seem to be more variation among the breast-fed infants. Almost half of the babies who gave up one night feeding while still in the hospital were breast-fed. But all of the children who insisted on a night feeding after the age of four months were also nursed.

Starting a child on cereal, fruit, or baby meat doesn't make much difference about his night-time sleeping habits, either, according to Dr. Beal. She could find no relationship between how many calories a baby eats during the day and how long he sleeps at night. You can't even tell from a baby's weight at birth whether he'll drop night feedings early or late, according to Dr. Beal.

Even the premature infants included in the study did not differ from the others in nighttime feeding patterns. How much a baby gains during the first three months of life doesn't seem to be a factor, either. There was a greater variation in ages when babies give up the second night feeding traditionally at 10 p.m. than the first, according to Dr. Beal.

Median age for shifting to a 12-hour span without feeding is 4 months, with individual babies ranging from one to 24 months. Babies who give up the first night feeding at an earlier- than-average age tend to go the second night feeding sooner, as well. It's been recognized that babies who weigh less than 5 pounds at birth run greater risk of being mentally retarded than children of normal birth rate. But what about infants who are oversized at birth? These high birth-weight infants are more than twice as likely to be mentally subnormal as preschoolers than are babies of average birth weight. So reports Dr.

S. Gorham Babson and associates of the University of Oregon Medical School, in Pediatrics magazine, following a study of 1,288 Portland children. Twenty-three per cent of the extra-large babies (defined as girls weighing more than 9 pounds at birth and boys weighing more than 9 pounds, 6 ounces) were found to have I.Q. scores lower than 80 when tested at age 4. This compares to 10 per cent of babies whose birth weight was within normal range.

True or ialse: Most young boys experiment with female- type behavior, such as dress- iiig up in feminine clothes or trying on lipstick, and it's nothing for parents to be concerned about? Not true, suggests a report in Pediatrics by Dr. Bernard Zuger and Patsy Taylor of New York University School of Medicine. Effeminate kinds of behavior occur only seldom and usually briefly if at all in most normal boys, they point out. Boys who persist in effeminate behavior grow into homosexuality in a large percentage of cases, the report says. Parents of the normal 2nd graders interviewed in the study were asked whether their sons ever dressed up in female clothes (even to trying on high heels), wore lipstick or other make-up, showed a preference for girl playmates, said they wished they were female, played with dolls, made feminine gestures, or showed a dislike for boys' games and toys.

A very small percentage of these parents reported they had noticed such symptoms. Most common were playing with dolls (15 per cent) and trying on feminine clothes (13 per cent). For many of the positive reports there were explanations such as "There aren't any boys in our area," or the female costume had been worn only on Halloween. But for another group of boys who were considered to be "effeminate" by psychiatrists findings of this type were much more frequent. Instead of trying on a mother's high heels just once, the effeminate boys often wore several items of female dress, for example.

If forbidden to continue the effeminate activity, these boys would do it anyway. When symptoms of feminine behavior are infrequent, when they often have a cause such as playing with girls because no boys are available and don't persist, parents can be reassured that their offspring are normal. and shouldn't worry, suggest the researchers. But when the behavior persists or is marked, it may likely be evidence of an inherent personality difference and psychiatric referral is indicated the researchers say. Good! And different too. 622 of diamonds. However, to your chances, you should pity in roughly followinf order: Win the club in either hand, cash the tee of hearts, tad return to dummy with club. Ruff a heart, play a diamond to the ace, and ruff another heart. If the king has not appeared, play a diamond to the king and lead the queen of hearts.

If South follows low or shows out, you can assure the slam by discarding your last diamond, for after winning with the king North is bound to be stymied. If he returns a diamond, dummy's fourth diamond becomes a trick; if he leads anything else, you also acquire a twelfth trick. If South covers the queen of hearts with the king, ruff and lead a diamond toward dummy's J-3. If North follows suit, you are home; if he shows out, you still have the spade finesse to fall back on. All told, your chance of making the slam by this succession of plays comes close to 100 per cent.

2. You start by assuming that North has the king of for if South has it you make the contract with a simple spade finesse. You also assume that North's seven is his fourth best heart, which means he may have led from either K-Q-8-7-X, K-lO-R-7-x, or Q-10-8-7-X. (With K-Q-lO-7-x, he presumably would have led the king.)
