per cent) and visceral approach to the game of basketball (100 per cent) came to the fore several times in its run down the tournament gauntlet but they were never more astutely applied than in Fridays record-breaking performance. The total score and Wampums 82 points were the highest of any. final game so far. Then too, there was the immeasurable rebounding performance of 6-0 Harold Allen that trimmed about ten inches off each of Columbias plus-6-footers. IN SATURDAYS game at the Penn Palestra, Haverford's sharpies hit Altoona in the face with a full-court press in the first minute and struck gold.

The press worked im mediately and when the Easterners realized Altoona could not solve It, they kept it on. They got more field goals (28) and more points (67) than any team ever had in the final and the 67-45 score came within three points of the largest winning margin of 25 opened up In 1934 in Pittsburgh Souths 4217 defeat of Reading. THE 12 FIELD goals by Haverford's Dan George tied the mark set by Farrell's Julius McCoy in 1952 and the 46 goals by both teams tied the record set by Farrell and Coatesville in the same game. Philly area observers maintain that Haverford was not the strongest District 1 team this season. They put Chester first and York of District 3 second.

The outcome of their playoffs, it appears, was almost as hard to dig as the Western results. Tiny Sylvia Pin Leader Pettite Sylvia Wene of Philadelphia, has taken over the all-events lead in the annual Pennsylvania State Women's Tenpin tournament at Brannans Bowl, McKees Rocks. The four-foot-11 bowler amassed a total of 1,845 pins in nine games. She had a 651 series as her Deborah Hospital team rolled 2,573 for second place in Class A team event Saturday. Then she added 633 in the doubles and 559 in the singles lead with 2,239.

30 By RUSS FRAISKE Its the week following the official close of the scholastic basketball season and theres an unnacustomed lull hover ing over the district scene where ordinarily at this stage there would be some sort of acclaim awaiting the WPIAL Class A champion. Its one of the few times since World War II that victory celebrations and savory rehashes do not follow the prevl o-u-s Saturdays state championship game. Instead, post-mortems were the order of the day as area fans returned from Philadelphia clucking in sympathy over the trouncing taken by this years Western representative, Altoona, in the title game. SATURDAYS GAME In which Altoonas Lions were run over by the Fords of Haverford and left for dead marked only the third time in the last ten seasons that some WPIAL school failed to carry home championship honors in the major division. Simply because no WPIAL team made the final this time.

However, it was not a total loss this season. Wampum saw to that. The Indians of Butler Hennon still have the fans raving, and that includes the Eastern fans who watched the fabulous little band of marksmen riddle Columbias giants on Friday, 82-64, in the state Class championship game in Hershey. Wampums title, its secorifl, gave the WPIAL its seventh Class championship since the recording of statewide play was started 14 seasons ago. WAMPUM'S shooting (57 Recognition At Last! LONDON (INS.)
