BarB-Q Sandwiches JOE MORELLOS Brite Spot 6327 CERMAK ROAD THE HARBOR Seasonable pictures, especially those paintec) by the masters, are abundant in the collections of the Art Institute.

Surely this is a time when the work of the noted painters, who have given to the world great and noble examples of Christian art, should be viewed with a fresh dedication on eur part to the belief that "Peace on Earth and Good Will Toward Men, is still the best philosophy. The' Art Institute is the home of the peaceful spirit. This is apparent in all its collections. Battle paintings are practically non-existent. Instead there are literally hundreds of Christian and kindred works of art.

Even the group of six paintings by Goya, showing the fight between the monk and the bandit, has a significant ending. The bandit, in the first of the six pictures, has seized the purse of the monk. In the next paintings, the holy man resists. Then he overcomes the robber, seizes his gun, and shoots him. The fellow falls, and the monk, following his Christian precepts, binds up his wounds.

The earliest Christian painting in the museum is Madonna and Child Enthroned, by Meliore Toscano, who lived in the second half of the 13th century. It is in Gallery 43. After the lapse of 680 years the blue in the Madonnas robe and the red in the Childs dress, is still bright and apparently shows little change throughout the centuries. It was painted in tempera, which is a mixture of the white of an egg, a ground color, and water to give it fluidity. Others of the early sacred paintings arc the six panels depicting the life of John the Baptist, from the time he preached in the Wild erness until his death, to satisfy the whim of Salome, King Herods daughter.

The panels were painted with tempera on wood, by Giovanni di Paolo, a Sienese, in 'the 15th century. In Gallery 46, a series of seven panels, painted by artists of the Amiens (French) school, in the late 15th century, show in brilliant color, seenes from the life of Christ. In the same gallery, on the west wall, hangs a notable painting by Bartel Bruyn, the Elder, of Virgin and Child, with St. Anne, St. Gcreon and Donor.

St. Gereon was frequently painted in that period (1493-1555). He was the Commander of the Theban Legion in the third eentury A.D., and was- put to death at Cologne for refusing to renounce Christianity. Hans Mending's Madonna and Child, is one of the notable works of art in the museum. It was painted in oil, on a panel, about 1485, and has been chosen as the masterpiece for the month of December.

It will be found in Gallery B5, near the front entrance. The Adoration of the Magi, by Lucas van Leyden, is a painting before which one may stand in deep admiration, for everything is there that makes a paintin great design, color, draughtsmanship, and depth of human interest. It was -painted in oil in- the early 16th century on a wood panel. 1 These are only a few of the 78 paintings now hanging in the museum galleries, all of which stem from events in the life of Christ. In the larger paintings do not overlook The Assumption of the Virgin by El Greco; The Resurrection, attributed to the School of Caravaggio; the large altar piece.

Madonna and Child, by Tiepolo; the fine tondo of the Adoration by Botticini; Christ Washing the Feet of the Disciples by Rembrandt; rnd the dramatic, Christ in the Storm, attributed to the School of Rembrandt. Every Saturday morning at 10:30 and again at 2:30 in the afternoon there meets in the galleries of the Art Institute a group of children from 9 to 15 years old. This group is invited to the Art Institute by the Department of Education and is open to any child. Each child is supplied with a stool, a drawing board, colored crayons, and paper in the childrens check room at the foot of the main staircase (near Black-Stone Hall). Here the children leave their wraps and obtain their materials, about 15 minutes be-' fore the Gallery Hour begins.

An assistant, Miss Blanche Larson, is on hand to see that the children have everything that is needed, and to help them. There is no charge for any of the material -The children, who like to draw, come from all parts of Chicago and its-qiburbs. They attend in groups from the YMCA and Settlement Houses, or come with their friends. Parents are invited bring their children for the irst session and to follow them -hrough the galleries jf theyVish. Mr.

Addis Osborne, who has charge of the Gallery Hour, goes with the children through the galleries and discusses with them the paintings and sculpture wh.ch will help in their drawing. nm Lincoln Makes Drapes and Rugs Look New!
