(AP) For those disappointed that Nebraska and West Virginia didnt play in a bowl game for college footballs national championship last year, theres now a minor consolation The Kickoff Classic. The Huskers and Mountaineers accepted invitations Monday to begin the 1994 season by playing in college footballs traditional opener at Giants Stadium on Aug. 28. The selection came after a proposed game between Miami and Wisconsin fell apart after the Badgers elected not to play, sources close to the game said. Getting Nebraska and West Virginia isnt a bad alternative.

Both Went undefeated in the 1993 regular season but each saw dreams of a national title fall apart in bowl games Jan. 1. Nebraska, which was third in the final Associated Press poll, lost 18-16 to then No. 1 and once-beaten Florida State in the Orange Bowl, missing a long field goal in the final seconds. Another school from the Sunshine State beat West Virginia.

Florida ripped the Mountaineers 41-7 in the Sugar Bowl, dropping them to No. 7 in the final poll. Nebraskas decision to play in the Kickoff Classic comes after it turned down an offer to play Fresno State in the Pigskin Classic. 1 Our players were very enthusiastic about playing this game, about 90 percent, and that was crucial in our decision, said Nebraska coach Tom Osborne, whose team has won three straight Big Eight titles. We didnt have anything against the Pigskin Classic, and that would have been a good game also, but we just didnt have the support of the team.

West Virginia, which has played several games against Rutgers at Giants Stadium, will be playing in its first Kickoff Classic. Year in and year out, Nebraska is one of the finest programs in the nation, and with the players they have they will surely be ranked at the top of the preseason polls for this season, said West Virginia coach Don Nehlen, the coach of the year in the Big East Conference last season. This game will be a tremendous challenge for our young football team, Nehlen said. Both teams will return 12 starters from squads that were 11-1 last year. The senior has been on the short end of first-round losses the last three years. But Piatkowski on Monday said this years Nebraska team, which plays Penn Thursday in an East Regional first-round game, is different. I think were going in with an awful lot -of confidence, Piatkowski said. Weve all been there (the tournament). Theres no reason for us to be intimidated.

Cornhusker coaches and players were still scrambling Monday to find out more about their opponent. Ive learned a lot about Penn in the last 18 hours. Ill ytell you that, coach Danny Nee said during his weekly news conference. But I dont think I know them yet Small wonder. Nebraska coaches didnt get their hands on tapes of Penns games this season until Monday morning.

Nebraska (20-9) will play Ivy League champion Penn (24-2) on Thursday in a 6:30 p.m. CST game in Uniondale, N.Y. Nebraska got into the tournament by winning its first Big Eight Conference tournament Sunday with a 77-68 victory over Oklahoma State. The title probably helped Nebraska earn a No. 22 ranking in this weeks Associated Press poll, its first ranking this season.

Penn has won 15 straight games since an 11 -point loss to Temple. The Quakers only other setback was a 2-point loss to Ohio State. Ive had two different coaches tell me that (Matt) Maloney and (Jerome) Allen are the best guard combination on the East Coast, Nee said of Penns backcourt duo, which averages more than 28 points per game. Were going to have to play pressure defense and shut down their perimeter game, said Piatkowski, voted the Big Eight tournaments most valuable player. But Nee and his players couldnt contain their glee at peaking at the end of the season.

It didnt help Flynn sleep.

Creighton lost the Missouri Valley Conferences automatic berth when Southwest Missouri State defeated the Lady Jays 88-71 in Saturday nights tournament championship at Spring-field, Mo. I told our team that we deserved to be playing still, Yori said. Were one of the better teams in the country. At first I was convinced that theyd have to take us, Flynn said of the selection committee. Then, the more I thought about it, I had convinced myself that there was a good chance that we might not get it.
