Land of the West 1 K' I Bjll Photos fay Christopher One of the most photogenic and fun filled places In Northern California was once the home of Santa Clara county pioneer congressman Hayes. The lush Hayes estate, home of the owners of the San Jose Mercury News until the sale to the Ridders, was a gathering place for top flight visitors from Teddy Roosevelt on down.

Its forest atmosphere and rural surroundings made it Santa Clara county's answer to San Simeon. Now, however, the estate is a retreat of a different kind, a fun place for youngsters and parents as is Frontier Village, a low keyed Knotts Berry Farm off the Monterey highway just south of the sprawling San Jose city limits. The amusement park has been in ope; ation for four years and this summer has seen records broken in attendance. The park is spotless, rarely jammed and its leisurely atmosphere makes it certain that one can take in all of the rides and attractions within about four Tt is a great place for the amateur camera fan also as these pictures attest.
