Such a discussion was contained in a pamphlet ''sent George N. Merritt, president of the Bank of Yolo, this week, from New York and containing the address of Richard Whitney, president of the New York Stock Exchange, delivered before a merchants association convention, September 17. The Exchange president did not hesitate to assail much of this alleged scientific analyses that professional economists are selling broadcast throughout the country, nor did he fail to intimate that the brand of statesmanship that seeks to increase market prices by artificial methods was any thing less than puny.

Pie had the courage that few of the captains of industry and chieftains in high places have displayed so far in the pi esent crisis. He struck straight from the shoulder. 'lAs long as the boom, continued," he declared, "many business men devoted little time or hard thinking to fundamental economic problems. Dazzled by easy profits, they satisfied themselves with repeating, parrot like, the optimistic slogans and catch words then so prevalent and left consideration of actual and basic factors in business to the supposedly safe tiustceship of the professional economist." And then he prcceeded from that point to emphasize the fact that the law of supply and demand controlled at that time, and controls now, and will continue to control as long as humanity barters and sells, which is known under the more dignified name of business. The money element naturally enters and during the war period when men were scarce, the demand for labor in the offices, fields and industrial plants increased the wage scale and the wage scale gave employes more money with which to buy.

Also the war and the results of the war, for several years after its close, created demand and this was supplied by the constant rumble of prosperous industrials. But the return of the boys from Europe reduced the demand in the wage market. Then statesmen began to tinker and experiment with the tariff, create funds to bolster some particularly weakening industrial product. Economists got busy with their guessing, all the time overlooking the great fundamental and everlastingly active law of supply and demand and, either for political reasons or because, of a density of mentality, neglected, or failed, to profit by experience. They, as others have done in the past, did not recognize the invulnerability of the strongest, the, "basic law of all trade supply and de inahd.

The sooner the public gives a deaf ear 1o these professional economists and the government quits voting bonuses and subsidies and. doles, the more quickly will all industry recover. Bonuses and subsidies and doles and preferential tariffs they are all the same thing never have and never will peiman ently cure any genei al economic disturbance. Each is a bounty to some particular class, or group, which other classes and groups must sacrifice to raise the money to pay. In the nature of things, they are spuiious institutions and will reap a dismal harvest.

goo Our Traffic Cops George Spaulding, Yolo county speed cop, genial and capable and accommodating, has acquired an enviable and wholly merited record. He has been cited twice for extraordinarily good service. Once the citation was given because of his valuable aid fire control work; and again, for helping to locate and arrest two service station burglars. Y'olo county is particularly fortunate in the personnel of its highway patrol. They are a fine and splendid and thoroughly qualified bunch of officei s.

And much of this is due to Capt. Henry Jacobs. He knows how to select men, and what is even belter, he knows how to handle them in order to maintain enthusiasm and efficiency. They are courteous at all times, have never yet been accused of abusing their authority and they are aiding immeasurably in making Y'olo one of the most popular counties in the state and among the safest for travelers. Incidentally, the Yolo division of the State Traffic Officer' association, has announced a benefit dance for Saturday evening, October 10, at Legion The dance is an annual institution and th proceeds are applied to the fund for the wy.cvh and orphans of traffic officers.

SAD LONGINGS The office of the "Democrat" was a rather mournful plate Saturday afternoon And we don't mean maybe, 'cause there were at least three people who weie working in person at typewriters, but their minds and hearts were at places far removed where cheering thousands were lauding the efforts of 22 gladiators on a gridiron And not all of us wanted to be at the same game, which is just as well, as it served to keep peace in the family But just the same, there was a terrible longing to be out in the wide open spaces helping the football season get away to a successful start. And one young lady of the office rivalled Graham McNamee when it came to describing the color and the beautiful autumn weather and the ciowds and the gay colored clothes and the stirring music and the noise and the snappy, thrilling yells of the rooting sections And then she longed to have a chrysanthemum to wear as a symbol of her loyalty But she was in a desperate plight, according to the tale of woe, for bills were due and she didn't "have a thing to wear" and besides she didn't have any money to make the trip and to top it all, she had to woik So that eliminated her except for the sad longings. And now to get to our own sad plight It was the mere fact that we had to work that kept us out of a stadium And besides, our face is losing it's qualities that used to make it good for crashing gates But aside from all that, we'll say honestly that we enjoyed ourselves to the utmost making each other feel miserable about what we were missing And it was such agonizing pleasure to wonder if Bill and Jack and Mary and Alice were having WIDOWER SUICIDES RED BLUFF William Zielke, 30, despondent over wife's death, kills self. SCHOOL HEADS WIN It was encouraging to read that Yolo county school authorities had succeeded in ironing out the difficulties with a few families that resulted in several children being enrolled in schools And the public school system represents a heavy investment by the tax payers And the whole object of that investment is that the children of today will be given the advantages of an education and will be in better position to lead useful lives as good citizens of the community, state and nation.

There are those who do not realize that the time lias come when a child without a fundamentally sound education is handicapped beyond almost all comprehension But the fact is that even an elementary school education, as it is presented today, gives the child a better appreciation of the things in life that really count And while a child may grow into manhood without ever turning his education to material advancement, he will be benefitted by the fact that he is able to read intelligently and has been given an insight into the appreciation of things that mean a lot in every day life. The school authorities are to be commended for their action, and the success they have met in their campaign shows 'that there is a general willingness on the pm't of parents to cooperate. 0 0 0 Can't help but admire the spirit of the young chap who drifted into town dead broke and after hustling for an hour or two landed a dishwashing job.
