He had a passion for biking and finished the Leadville 100 bike race in 2007 at the age of 60. He enjoyed being a grandparent and doing outdoor activities with his grandchildren. In 2002 he re-tirea and moved to Buena Vista with Laurie. He kept busy working on the yard, updating his mountain home and training for this year's Ride The Rockies and Leadville 100. He also volunteered at local bike races and helped build trails.

Ron is survived by his wife, Laurie Gillingham of Buena Vista, sons, Glen (Liz) Gillingham of Boulder, and Steve (Ashia) Gillingham of Madison; sister, Sandy (John) Wilke of Pahrump. and grandchildren. Oliver, India, Owen and Simon. He was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial service held Wednesday.

PERS1KE, Ronald 67 Frederick, James WMIDDLETON James Frederick, age 84, died peacefully at home on May 20, 2011. in Middleton. Jim grew up on the Frederick Farm in Middleton which is now part of the Pheasant Branch Conservancy. The farm was homesteaded in the late 1800s by his grandfather Hubert Vasen. Jim and his brothers sold the land to Dane County for the conservancy in 1994.

After high school Jim served with the U.S. Army in Japan as part of the occupying force during 1946 and 1947. During his career Jim worked with orchids for more than 40 years; he started with Schubert's on Lake Mendota while still in high school and then continued with Orchids by the Ackers until his retirement in 1987. Jim was an avid golfer, bowler and card player. In later years Jim greatly enjoyed spending his winters in Arizona, driving for Ballweg's Chevrolet and spending time with his grandchildren.

Jim had many friends and will be greatly missed. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Doris; and his children, Maureen (Jerry) Mmnick, LaVonne (Marv) Theis, Keith (Lori) Frederick, Karen (Harvey) Rohde and Kendall (Jane) Frederick; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers. Vern Frederick of Middleton, and Bob Frederick of California He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Katherine (Vasen) Frederick. There will be a Memorial Mass on Saturday.

STOUGHTON-Madeleine Baltes. age 93, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 1, 2011, in Oregon. She was born in Kenosha, on March 23, 1918, to John and Elizabeth (Chudada) Gurichan. Madeleine was married to Dominic Baltes on June 28. 1941.

After his death, she moved to Milwaukee, and worked for the Milwaukee School Board for many years. Foliowing retirement Madeleine moved to Bradenton, where she enjoyed the sunshine for more than twenty years. Madeleine loved to travel the world, visiting China. Turkey, Egypt. Israel and Europe She loved music, especially jazz and big band, and attended many concerts and shows.

Madeleine is survived by her son, George Baltes: daughter-in-law, Kathleen: two grandchildren. Geoffrey and Jennifer: and a sister, Olga Heiden. She was preceded in death by her husband: and parents. A Memorial Mass will be held at 1 30 m. on Wednesday.

age 88. passed away on Sunday, May 29. 2011, at Attic Angel Place in Middleton He was born on March 15, 1923. in Merrill, the son of Emil and Loraine Berndt. Harley married Marilynn Partridge on Nov.

27, 1943. Butch attended the University of Southern California and received his B.A. in architecture. He was a veteran of World War II and Vietnam, serving with the S. Air Force He piloted the P51.

T33, F102 and F106 He was a member of the WWII- P51 Pilots 319th FIS Assn, and he belonged to an elite group of airmen who flew Mach Two (twice the speed of sound). Butch ana Marilynn retired to the Harlingen area in 1971 where he became active with the Harlingen Lion's Club and designed homes in the valley. He also was a card-carrying member of the Dye Hard Chicago Cubs Fan Club since 1928. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Greg Shekey and their sons. Scott.

Matthew and Aaron: his brother, Richard; and many friends. In addition to his wife Marilyn, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Cindy. May 31. 2011. at Villa Pines Living Center in Friendship. Marcia was born on Feb. 20.

1918. in Camp Douglas to Marshall and Mary (Mae Freeborn). She attended and graduated from Holmsville Elementary. Adams-Friendship High School, and Waushara County Teachers College. She began her teaching career at the age of 16 in Adams County.

Marcia was married to Harold William Bloomfield on June 20. 1939. in Nekoosa. Throughout their marriage they owned and operated businesses in Beaver Dam. Grand Marsh and Marshall.

In addition, Marcia worked for Dane and Adams counties as well as holding positions in the state and federal government in Madison. She semi-retired in 1980 and moved to Adams County in 1985 whereupon she began working in real estate for Century 21. She served on the County Board of Commissioners and volunteered at the Adams County Library During this time she wrote a weekly nostalgia column for the Times-Reporter. Her hobbies were writing, bowling and playing cards. Survivors include sons.

Lloyd Bloomfield of Adams, and Jim (Catherine) Bloomfield of Maple Grove, and daughters. Jeanne (Terry) Eichenseer of Hoffman Estates, Rita Bloomfield of Madison, and Laurel Falash of Friendship Grandsons include Mitchell Eichenseer of Tucson, and Chris Eichenseer of Chicago, III granddaughters, Jennifer (David) Peterson, Julie (Adam) Werner of Ramsey. and Jill (Nick) Fadden. at her home on the Leopold Reserve near Baraboo. She was born Aug 4. 1917 in Albuquerque. N.M., the third child of famed conservationist Aldo Leopold and Esteila Bergere Leopold, of a prominent Spanish family in New Mexico. Nina will be remembered as a scientist.

conservationist, philosopher, and humanitarian by an international community of colleagues. After growing up in New Mexico and Madison, she attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating in the 1930s with a rnaior in geography. With her first husband, zoologist William Elder, she collaborated on many wildlife projects, studying Canada geese in Illinois, ducks in Manitoba, big game populations in Africa, and the rediscovered but nearly extirpated population of Nene geese in Hawaii During World War II she worked for Dr. Thomas Park on the Tribolium project at the University of Chicago studying insect populations. In 1971, Nina accepted a position with the Thorne Ecological Institute in Boulder.

facilitating conferences to introduce corporate leaders to important ideas in ecology. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the distinguished service award of the Society of Conservation Biology and honorary doctorates from Northland College and the University of Wisconsin. Beginning in 1935. Nina spent many happy weekends with her family at the Leopold shack near Baraboo. participating in one of the world's first wildland restoration proiects.

Along with her second husband Charles Bradley, she rekindled the "axe-m-hand" philosophy of her father, establishing the Bradley Study Center on the Leopold Reserve along the Wisconsin River in 1976. This work included creation of a graduate ecological research program in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin and expansion of the land restoration and pheno-logical observation that her family had begun so many years ago. The work of Nina and Charles was instrumental in the establishment of the internationally recognized Aldo Leopold Foundation and the construction of the Leopold Center. Nina is survived by her sister, Dr. Esteila Leopold of Seattle, her daughters, Nina Loeffel of Waunakee, and Trish Stevenson of Black Earth; her stepchildren, Charles Bradley Jr.

Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Cook, Darrell Walter MADISON Darrell Walter Cook, age 86, of Madison, passed away from Alzheimer's on Thursday, June 2. 2011, at HospiceCare. He was born on Nov. 9.

1924, in Orion, the son of Thomas and Mat-tie (Winser) Cook Darrell grew up in Muscoda and was the youngest of six children. He was the only child in his family to graduate from high school. He married Arlene Elizabeth Cook (nee Parkinson) on Aug. 31. 1943.

Darrell and Arlene owned and operated several local restaurants. Their restaurants were known for home cooking, most notably Brown's Restaurant and Catering, which they co-owned with Orv and Barb Erickson. Patrons would follow Darrell and Arlene, no matter the location for another taste of those buttermilk pancakes, hot beef sandwiches and the best hamburger deluxe ever created. Darrell was a veteran of World War II. an avid golfer, a mighty Packer backer, and an avid Badgers fan.

He was most of all a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Darrell is survived by his daughters. Darlene A. Cook (Anthony G. Hendricks) and Janet (Ken) Wheaton: granddaughter, Jennifer (Dave) Boyer; grandsons, Andrew (Alexandra) Noel and David Noel; great-grandchildren, Dylan and Parker Boyer, and Anna and Wilder Noel; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife. Arlene on Nov 22, 1991; his parents: three brothers; and two sisters. As per Darrell's request, he will be cremated and buried next to his loving wife. Arlene, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Richland Center.

May 31.2011. She was born on Feb. 1. 1950. in Oshkosh, to Edward Orville Brooks and Mildred Clara (Bobb) Brooks.

She grew up in Omro. She graduated from school with a degree in nursing and throughout her life, she focused in careers that cared for others. She is mother to Jeffrey and Deborah. and devoted her life to being a good mother and grandmother, not only to her immediate family, but also to those she loved. She enjoyed gardening, spending time with friends, being outdoors, reading, decorating, sewing and cooking.

She created a sense of community wherever she lived, and had a knack for bringing people together She lived in Madison for 26 years and in that time developed many close friendships. Linda is survived by her sister, Mary Fraser; brother, Charles Brooks: daughter, Deb Dryer; son. Jeff (Christine) Dryer; granddaughter, Alexandra Dryer: and numerous friends and relatives. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Brooks and her mother, Mildred (Bobb) Biooks. 10, 1942. to Walton and Phyllis (Barron) Green He graduated from Madison East High School in 1961. Following school he joined the Navy and served from 1964 to 1966 In 1968. he married the love of his life. Margaret Derr.

He was employed at Oscar Mayer for 27 years and also worked for the Sun Prairie Postal Service as a rural carrier for nine years. Ed was a very family orientated man. He put everyone else before himself. He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, ana especially vacations with his family. He also enjoyed teaching his youngest daughter, Maggie, softball.

Survivors include his wife Margaret, three daughters. Shelley Meyer, Jennifer (Gilbert) Leal, and Maggie Green; five grandchildren, Brittany and Jacob Meyer, and Gabriel, Michael and Madeline Leal, a greatgrandchild. Layla Martin, a brother, Mike Daly; and three sisters, Donna (Gene) Hendrickson. Brenda (Jim) Steckling and Marsha (Rick) Knee-bone He is also survived by his mother-in-law. Virginia. who passed away on Jan 9, 2011, Robert graduated from St Marcus Christian Elementary School and Riverside High School in Milwaukee He then graduated from Marquette University in the year of 1943 with a degree of bachelor of science in engineering Robert worked as a cooperative student during college at Harmschfeger from 1940 to 1943 He served honorably in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theater, including Iwo Jima and Luzon in the Philippines. Robert returned from the war in 1946 to resume his career in mechanical engineering at Harms-chfeger Corporation of Milwaukee. He married Virginia I. Fletcher in 1947.

His career at Harmschfeger spanned 43 years. His duties included being chief engineer at the various equipment product lines, working in Milwaukee, Cedar Rapids. Iowa, and twice in Escanaba, completing his career in Escanaba In 1978 he was a member of one of the first trade delegations to The People's Republic of China. During his visit, relations between the countries were normalized and he celebrated this occasion with his Chinese engineering colleagues. He was a member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

and the Society or Automotive Engineers (SAE), serving as co-chair of subcommittee XVlT, Group (A), Construction Equipment Manufacturing Association (CEMA). Robert was the holder of seven U.S. patents concerning construction equipment. He was a devoted Lutheran, serving as president of the Immanuel Lutneran Church in Escanaba, Mich. He loved singing in the choir with his wife, and served in many roles in each of the churches he attended, including being a delegate to the Synod.

At the time of his death he was a member of St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church of Verona, Wis. In his spare time, especially during his retirement, he was an avid golfef at the Terrace Country Club in Escanaba. He enjoyed playing bridge at the Tuesday Bridge Group and was a skilled woodworker Robert also was a member of Escanaba Kiwams Club and the American Association of Lutherans for 15 years. Robert suffered a stroke in 2002 and moved to Verona where he and Virginia made many friends.

He moved to Capital Lakes Retirement Community in Madison in 2004. He is survived by his four children, David (Janet) Fritsch of Ann Arbor. BARABOO Elia Astle. age 92, of Baraboo, died on June 2. 2011, at Meadow Ridge Assisted Living Ella, daughter of John and Kate (Pigg) McLean was born on July 14. 1918 in Caledonia Township. On Dec.

15. 1937, she was united in marriage to Robert Astle. She had been employed as a retail clerk for many years. Ella was an avid bowler and also loved gardening, playing cards and cooking. Survivors include her four children, Neal (Patti) Astle of Baraboo.
