These people would sell to their friends a tfojlar article. Then the people to whom the Hie Is made are provided with order blanks nd they are asked to sell the article. Promises of worthwhile commissions are made to all who sell the goods. The promotion matter sent here states the company will pay 50 cents for every sale made for the company after the first three sales and the seller will also receive 50 cents commission on the first three sales of all his buyers and 50 cent commission would be paid for the first three sales of the buyers' buyers and so on. How the original salesman is going to keep books on all these sales is not explained but the company will, at any rate, receive one dollar from each sale.

The chain scheme is worked through "friends" based on the theory that a friend won't refuse to buy the article from a good friend for a dollar. The scheme is so laid out that it would spread through an intricate maze difficult to stop. Such chains should be barred from spreading if for no other reason than the plan is offensive to many people. Any article proposed for sale through such a chain plan can be found on the shelves of your hometown merchants and it can be bought at a cheaper price and of a better quality than Obtained through such a promotion Don't be taken in. 0 Big Brains Committee There is now a plan, credited to Professor Albert Einstein, for "an inter national committee of the 25 greatest minds of the world to function in the best interests of The idea is that such a committee would go into a huddle and emerge with a master plan whenever there was a world crisis.

It would also speak out against flagrant injustice. What has become of our own "best minds?" We thought, not long ago, that we had plenty of them, not only to solve our American problems but to plan for all mankind. And what is the matter with the other nations' best minds, supposed to be functioning at Geneva for economic action and international justice? The big difficulty now is that so many master minds have been discredited and deflated. Six are supposed to be chosen i om the United States for the world committee. Can we furnish that many? "Invitations are to be issued." we are told, "only to intellectuals of the highest And are there to be no men of action Well, the line of candidates will form on the right.

Or rather, on the left. "The mem says the spokesmen, "must be powiv ful personalities of international renown, and i they must be known for their liberal Dr. Einstein presumably will be in it. He can do the figuring. The sooner the outfit gets on the job, the better.

Brave and Capable Men Why turn to the past for tales of thrilling adventure at sea and of heroes who stand by one another and stick to duty in the face of terrific obstacles and dangers? When the American Merchant came into port recently with 22 men who had been rescued in mid Atlantic from the wrecked British freighter, Exeter City, there were heroes enough aboard to supply many sea stories. There was an American skipper whose skillful seamanship made the rescue possible. There was the British wireless opeiator who stuck to his post, up to his knees in water, building a new one when the sea washed away his aerial, until his S. 0. S.

brought help. There was the officer who worked out the Exeter City's position far from where that ship's own estimates had placed it. There was the 15 year old cabin boy who bailed water all night long. There was the ship's surgeon who with one shot sent the rescue line to the floundering ship. There was the young seaman who, with an arm in a 'sling, carried a life line to imprisoned of fkers when a giant wave wrecked the boat's superstructure.

OIT OF THE PAST The stoiy of the offering of an aged woman as a human sacrifice by a mountain religious cult in a reunite spot ni Kentucky serves to shock the entire nation. That such a thing could happen in within the boundaries of the United Siatcs seems almost unbelievable to most of us. There are seven members of this strange and fantastic cult ate in jail, having been stopped from burning tj.L woman's body on an altar after she had been ch to death with a chain around her threat. i tie is arrived in time to witness a portion of the i where the uneducated and fanatical mountain io.k were preparing the iast part of the human to their god.

matter of tact, the situation is not so strange as it might seem. There are many, many fanatical religious culls within the boundaries of this country. Some of them believe in and stage human sacrifices. In this one case, officials learned of it in time to prevent the final acts, but not in time to save the life of the aged woman. How many murder mysteries that have remained unsolved could be laid at the door of these cults will probably never be known, but it is certain that many lives have been sacrificed in such causes.

Far be it from us to deter anyone in their anxiety to save the "heathen folk" of other lands. Much good has been done by missionaries throughout the world, and they lave brought health and stability to many groups of natives who lacked the knowledge to help themselves. But this occurrence clearly indicates that we need not travel to other lands to find an outlet for our missionary zeal. There is much that can be done within the boundaries of our own country, and the work is desperately needed in those sections. Barbarism exists in many forms within tl United States in those remote mountain fastnesses.

A more intelligent but equally barbaric type of cult can be found in most of the larger cities of the country. Those who are seeking a chance to lead people into lives of righteousness can find as big a challenge in their own country as they can in any uncivilised Miction. But there are few who will accept the work at home or realize a need for it. It requires something such as this human sacrifice to awaken us to conditions that exist within our own country. 0 0 0 A COOLIDGE STAMP Now comes the suggestion that a stamp be issued in honor of Caivin Coolid'ge as national recognition of his qualities of heart and mind.

Such a stamp would be more than that. It would be a recognition of a fundamental principle of American life the equality of civic opportunity, which has slipped from sight to some degree in recent years. 0 0 0 It all depends on where you stand.
