She was 76 and in 2009 was diagnosed with ALS, a neurode-generative condition known as Lou Gehrigs disease. Stankes high -energy mix of humor, intellect and forthrightness led local arts writer Jacob Stockinger to call her a veritable one-woman band and perhaps the most colorful character in the entire city of Madison. That tribute came in June 2005, on the occasion of Stances retirement after more than four decades great acclaim in 1993.

Stanke was a Madison West High School graduate and a Madisonian through and through, but her influence extended beyond the city. She spent a decade on the board of the national organization Opera America. In 1998, while researching a profile of Stanke, a reporter called Opera America president Marc Scorca for comment, only to learn he was in Europe on a business trip. An hour later, the reporter was stunned to get a return call from Scorca, who was in Milan, Italy. This is the minimi im I would have done for Arm Stanke, Scorca said.

If I had to call you while standing on hot coals, I would have done it from Madison Opera. A sellout crowd of some 500 admirers gathered at the Overture Center for an event billed A Gala Celebration to Honor Ann Stanke. When Stanke started with Madison Opera in 1961, its annual budget was $6,000. It had grown to $L4 million by the time she retired. She also was a skilled musician who played the viola and piano with the Madison Symphony.

In an interview late last month, Stanke said she considered her greatest achievement the Frank Lloyd Wight -inspired opera Shining Brow which the Madison Opera premiered to i Discover Deerfield Greenhouse State of Wisconsin Legal Notices We Specialize in High Quality Spring Garden Plants. Someone asked, Whatever happened to that guy with the gashouse eggs? Jorstad smiled and said he came around the counter, took a piece of bread, folded it, and took a bite out of the middle, producing a hole. Then he buttered the bread, put it on the grill, and cracked an egg that he placed on the grill in the hole in the bread. That, he said, is how you make a gashouse egg. The man was a professor, after all. Its not on the menu at the new Rennies, but then, it never was.

It was that kind of place. Once Mary even took a student who worked for her at Rennies into her home because the young man had money trouble and otherwise would have had to drop out of schooL Jorstad got a tour of WID on Tuesday and liked what she saw.
