Page 6 Aiken Standard, Aikcn, S.C., 3,1973 WALL RIPPED AWAY An outside wall of this home was ripped away, leaving the occupants and furniture inside unharmed. HARDEST HIT BY TORNADO Dr. Edward DeZurko's house was one of hardest hit in Athens, Ga. (Staff Photos by Rick Hawkins) Homes, Trees Destroyed In Athens (EDITOR'S NOTE: Rick Hawkins, a student at tbe University of Georgia in Athens and who works for' the Aiken Standard in the summer and daring vacations, was in Athens Saturday night when a tornado hit the city. Hawkins took the accompanying pictures and wrote this article after interviewing some of the victims of the violent storm.) By RICK HAWKINS Sunday dawned clear, warm, and sunny as residents of the Forest Heights area went out to inspect the damage from Saturday night's tornado and begin cleanup operations.

Many of the residents were faced with an almost impossible chore. Power, and telephone service was cut off while exhausted crews who had been working through the night, struggled to restore service. Many residents, overcome by the hopelessness of their own situation, walked the streets, helping neighbors or simply gazing in disbelief at the destruction all around them. Evidenced all over was neighbors helping each other to salvage something of what little remained. Roofs were ripped off of homes, trees snapped off a few feet from the ground and broken glass littered the streets.

Residents gathered in small groups, telling stories of their experiences, and simply gaining solace in one another's companionship. The residents would tell their stories to anyone who would listen. Gerald Stoaker related, "I didn't know what to think. All I wanted to do was get my family safe and into the center of the house. We were lucky!" One woman commented, "See those trees over there, why all those old oaks went likekindlin'." Another woman was, "going down the highway, trying to get home, as it hit.

I couldn't see a car started I stopped. I was lucky, I guess the Lord was with me." Mrs. B.J. Jones was overheard telling of her experiences, "I couldn't think a thing. All I thought was 'get my kids and go to the basement.

By the time we got there, we didn't have any warning, you know, 'cause we weren't listening to the Athens radio station, it was too had already gone over. We just sat there not knowing what to do. I hope it never happens again." "We heard a noise coming, it sounded just like a freight train coming, it got louder and louder, then it hit us," Mrs. David James added. Cathy Barryman told a different story, "We didn't even hear it.

I didn't even know it was coming. All I heard was a sound like a train and horns." The children didn't seem quite so upset as their parents. They just stood around and watched the cleanup operations going on around them. "I thought it sounded like a train," nine year-old Lisa Griffeth said. "My dad walked in and said, 'the tornado is on We went in my bedroom, just as we got there, a limb crashed through the ceiling.

We pulled the sheets off my bed and pulled the mattress over us. By that time it was all over." Karen Fowler, a seventh- grader, said, "I just didn't know what was happening. We ran into the basement and got in the back. The tornado, it sounded like a jet airplane taking off, I thought that the world was coming to an end." Worst hit in the Forest Heights area seemed to be Dr. and Mrs.

Edward De- Zurko. The DeZurko home was nearly destroyed. The roof was ripped off and the walls were torn apart. All of their belongings were rain-soaked in the deluge following the twister. "I was just coming out of the bathroom as it started," Mrs.

DeZurko said. "My husband came down (the stairs) with a cup of coffee in his hand. We huddled together and drank the coffee. Our little dog he's over there now-was upstairs. We could hear his bell jingling as he ran around.

"Just as it hit, he came running down the stairs- terrified. We're only glad that we're safe. What we lost-it's only things-we're just glad that we're all right." Although the other families in the area were not so hard hit, they still have weeks of cleanup work in store. It is expected that power and phone service will be restored in a day or so and most of the other damage should be repaired in a few weeks. Although the man-made structures can be repaired, it takes years for a tree to grow back and many areas will never be the same.
