By the time she was 15 she was a floor show dancer in New York cabarets and with the Ziegfeld Follies. Playwright Willard Mack rechristenea her Barbara Stanwyck after glancing at a playbill that read "Jane Stanwyck in Barbara Fritchie. She married vaudeville comedian Frank Fay in 1921969. 26 Apr. 2 LOS ANGELES (AP) Barbara Stanwyck, the leading lady of film classics whose 60-year show business career began on the chorus line, ended in television and included a rich variety of roles, has died at age 82. She was marvelous and unfailingly professional, very demanding that everything be done as well as it could be, said Charlton Heston, who starred with Stanwyck in the television series, The Colbys. Miss Stanwyck died Saturday evening at age 82 of congestive heart failure at St. Johns Hospital and Health Center in Santa Monica, said agent Larry Kleno.

Stanwycks career spanned the chorus line, vaudeville, motion Eictures and television, earning er three Emmys and four Academy Award nominations. Her versatility running the gamut from mercenary murderess in Double Indemnity to horrified and helpless victim in Sorry Wrong Number gained Miss Stanwyck respect as a matriarch of the entertainment industry. Stanwycks only Oscar was an honorary statuette presented in 1982 for the body of her work. And the American Film Institute gave her its most prestigious honor, the Life Achievement Award, in 1987.
