Maybe even two or four. But 70? Yet, it's a fact that the Blytheville congregation of Jehovah's witnesses has 70 ministers. How so? Because all of Jehovah's witnesses go from house to house and minister to the spiritual needs of interested persons. There is no clergy-laity distinction in congregations of the Witnesses, Eight of the local minsters take oversight of different features of the congregation's activity, but none are salaried and all perform the same public service as do others in the congregation. When talking about the size of the local congregation, it's necessary to explain what is meant by the term, "one of Jehovah's Witnesses." A "Witness" is one who has completed a prescribed course of Bible study, has been ordained by water baptism and goes from house to house carrying the Bible's message to others. Thus it can be seen that one who merely attends meetings sponsored by Jehovah's Witnesses is not, in fact, a witness for Jehovah God. Attendance at the local congregation's meetings, therefore, exceeds the number of those who go from house to house, but the size of the congregation still is listed at 70 ministers. * * * In 1945, while the world was digging itself out from the debris of World War Two, the international organization of Jehovah's witnesses was girding itself for a period of expansion unparalleled in its history. In the decade following the second global conflict, the number of house-to-house teachers associated with the Witnesses more than doubled. From 104,142 ministers in 1945, the number jumped to 293,341 ministers in 1954; and in 1966 to more than one million. Part of that phenomenal growth was in Blytheville. In 1945 a tiny congregation of Witnesses began meeting in a building- in the 500 block of West Main Street. In 1962 there were about 20 persons in the Blytheville area that went from house to house teaching others the Bible. By 1966 the number had more than tripled. For many years the local congregation met in private homes, reminiscent of the practice among first-century Christians mentioned in the Bible at Rom. 16:3-5. Recently, construction was begun on a meeting place at 801 West Moultrie. The building, pictured above, is still under construction. Instead of being called a church, Witnesses' meeting places are called Kingdom Halls. The reason? Just as the city hall is dedicated to discussing matters pertaining to the city, Kingdom Halls are devoted to educating persons about the Kingdom of God. , . In addition to the five weekly meetings held at Kingdom Hall, Jehovah's Witnesses attend convention's sponsored by the Watchtower Bible arid Tract Society of New York, legal agency for the Witnesses world wide. Dec. 16-18 such a convention will be held in Poplar Bluff, Mo., and will feature the Bible .lecture, "Satisfying Mankind's Greatest Need." Congregation meetings and such conventions are designed to better enable the Witness minister to serve persons of good heart in their community.
