Alec Andes, a sophomore at King's, won first place and was awarded a $1 ,500 prize.

Andes finished in third place in last year's contest. They will continue in the competition for 7,400 Merit Scholarship Awards, worth about $32 million, that will be offered later this spring.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the academic competition, is a privately financed, not-for-profit corporation. More than 1.5 million students in more than 22,000 U.S. high schools entered the 201 6 Merit Program when they were juniors by taking the 2014 Preliminary SATNational Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. Fewer than one percent of the nation's high school seniors were named finalists on a state representational basis. The number of finalists named in each state is proportional to the state's percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

All Merit Scholar designees will be chosen from the finalist group. Three types of Merit Scholarship awards will be offered in 201 6. Every finalist will be considered for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis.
