1 No Substitutes For Royal Baking Powder. The "Royal" is shown by all tests, official, scientific, and practical, stronger, purer, and better in every way than all other Baking Powders. Its superiority is privately acknowledged by other manufacturers, and well known by all dealers. If some grocers try to sell another baking powder in place of the Royal," it is because of the greater profit. This of itself is good evidence of the superiority of the Royal." To give greater profit the other must be a lower cost powder, and to cost less it must be made with cheaper and inferior materials, and thus, though selling for the same, give less value to the consumer.

LOOK, with suspicion upon every attempt to palm off upon you any baking powder in place of the "Royal." There is no substitute for the "Royal." Dress Suit (Tricot), $20. Third Floor, East. Bargain Room, a kind. Half and less than half price. MM Oak Hall, Sixth and MC A RNEY.

JON BrokersTOr. 3d Oasklll Bta. to FIRST OPERATIONS SUCCESSFUL A Canal Cut Through the Beach and Nine Mlle of Railroad Constructed The Canal Opening Extended Eleven Miles Inland by Dredging The Company's Settlement at Greytoirn Healthy Sea Breeios and General Activity Among the Engineering Contingent Movements of the Visitors. Special Correspondence of The Tram.

Greytown, Nicaragua, April 7. Even the most superficial observer here sees at once that a great deal of work hag already been done on the canal, and that great obstacles hare been overcome. But the visible results form a comparatively insignificant part of what has actually been accomplished. For instance, eighty five miles of surveys have been made for each r.iile of canal. Any engineer will appreciate at once the importance of this, and the enormous amount of labor it requires.

The forest consists of huge trees more than one hundred feet high, loaded with vines, and sheltering luxuriant undergrowth opposing entrance, like a wall. Through this the surveyors cut their way with machetes, wallowing in slush in the dry weather, and in wet weather often swimming. Surveying was tegun in 1887, and parties have been con tinually in the field ever since, the last survey being completed on the Pacilio slope about a week ago. GREYTOWN TO DAY. Greytown is situated on a lagoon.

Forty years ago it was at the mouth of the San Juan river, had a fine harbor and ocean steamships of the heaviest draught could come up to its wharves. It was then the point chosen by Commodore Vandcrhilt as the Caribbean Sea terminus of his steamship line run in opposition to the Pacific Mail. But when the canal company began operations here the glory of Greytown had departed; the San Juan had turned asido from its old course, the mouth of the harbor filled up entirely and a narrow creek connecting with the Colorado afforded the only communication with the ocean. The canal company's material had to be unloaded on the open sea, at the mouth of the Colorado, and transported in lighters across tho outer bar and, half unloaded, across the inner bar. CUTTING ACROSS THE BEACH.

In December, the company, having set np its plant on tho verge of the forest at the north end of the lagoon, began opening a passageway to the sea across the beach, which varied in width from 300 to S00 feet. A pile breakwater 42 feet wide and 1,700 feet long was begun about a mile north of Grey lown, and immediately on its being run out the combined action of tho eddy and the breakers speedily rut a channel across the beach along its north side 500 feet wide and 6 feet deep. Dredging increased the depth to about 14 feet in the shallowest parts, at which point it has since been maintained. The breakwater is now 1,015 feet long and work on it has been temporarily suspended, to be resumed when more rock can be obtained for filling from a quarry to be reached by the company's railroad. Another breakwater has been started about two hundred feet north of the first and pushed out about fonr hundred feet.

The piles are brought from the United States, mainly from Wilmington, N. and are all creosoted. So far only a few piles have been attacked by the teredo. The company baa had a deep water dredgo constructed in Scotland which is expected next I montn. When it arrives work ol dredging the outer bar will be begun, and Chief Engineer Jlenocal is confident that with its aid and the completion of the breakwater a depth of thirty feet can bo secured and maintained at tho entrance to the canal.

TICK RAILROAD UTPEB WAY. The company's railroad on the south side of the canal has been laid nine miles into tho interior and the grading is well advanced a mile farther toward the desired quarry. The road is of the standard gauge, laid with fifty six pound steel rails of American manufacture on ties also brought from the United States. It will bo extended to Ochoa, on the San Juan, about thirty seven mile3 from Greytown, and is intended primarily for the transportation of materials, but it is expected to secure a considerable paying trafficatthat point in the transportation of rubber, cotlee and other produce brought down by the river from the interior. When completed it will be one of the busiest roads iu the world, as the transportation of material will require a train every eight minutes.

The whole party, with some of the officers of the company and native officials, rode out to the end of tho road on Saturday and the visitors were delighted with their first sight of a tropical forest. HOW THE CANAL IS DREDGED. The canal opening has been extended eleven miles inland to the base of tho foot hills. The canal itself is now cut over 1,300 feet inland from the west bank of the Grey town lagoon and throughout that distance has twenty feet of water. The Canal Con struction Company purchased the entire plant of the North American Improvemen Company, which did the dredging for the collapsed Panama Canal, and six of its seven mammoth dredges lio in the harbor.

The other, the I)e Lessens, like the fame of its pronominator, went down on the way here lrom lolon. 1 wo ot these dredges, tho Citv of Paris and the M. A. Slaven, are now at wort in the canal. They are dredging on the opposite banks, the Slaven on tho right and slightly in advance At their present rate ot working tney are excavating Jiltoon cubic yards a minuto and advance about twenty five feet a day often working hours, WORKING TOWARDS OCHOA.

The present width of the canal will bo extended to the great divido where the width at the surface of the water will be 100 feet with a ten foot boom on each side ten feet above the water line and sloping banks to the top of the divide. Tho greatest depth of excavation on the divide will bo 327 feet, and the average, 150 feet. At the point where the canal crosses the divide is 3 miles wide. We start early to morrow morning to fol low the line of tho canal across the divide and up to Ohoa on foot, the only means of transportation at present possible, and tho character of the country and the work necessary to be done will be fully described in my next letter. The uniform derth of the canal below the water line is to be thirty feet.

Tho depth is now twenty feet. When the advance dredges are somewhat further along two other dredges will be set to work behind them to dredgo out tho additional ten leet. THE SETTLEMENT AT "AMKRICA." All the company's buildings, except the machine shop, he north of the canal and the northern end of the lagoon. The lagoon, by the way, is about three miles long, three quarters of a mile in width, deep, and an excellent harbor. The settlement made by the company is called America, though I cannot liolp thinking that the name applied to it by the Nicaraguans, La Fo (the faith), is more appropriate.

Altogether there are forty two buildings, nearly nil of two stories, and many of them very large structures. No seaside resort in the States is half so breezy. As I write tho wind is howling round my quarters, and it has been doing the same thing night and day ever since I have been here. Nowhere on earth is there a more cooling, refreshing, healthful breczo than this north cast trado, and tho officers of the company tell mo that it blows with the same force pearly every day in the year. Every member of the party is delighted with the temperature of America, and several have expressed a determination to come down bore every spring.

A HEALTHY SEASIDE RESORT. The company's experience completely disproves the popular belief in the United States of the unhealthiness of the locality. Although it has a working force of 600 men, it has not had at any one time more than thirty patients in the hospital, and there have been only two or threo deaths altogether. This record has been made in spite of the fact that many of the men have at times been forced to work for hours up to their arm pits in water. Much credit, however, is due to the excellent sanitary pro cautions.

So far as I am ablo to judge by appearances the administration seems to he both ablo and economical. I am told by Mr. Davis, 11 r. Menocal's chief assistant, that of 15, the No. me 18, 21, pressed much disappointment that he had not been ablo to rescue the party before the Corazo.

No relief has yet been sent to Captain Baillie and the eight members of the Aguan's crew, who still remain on the wreck. Senator MacArthur, Mr. and Miss Scribner, Ex Congressman Merriam, Mr. and Mrs. Kankino and Miss ClaTk will return to New York on the Hindo, which sails hence tomorrow.
