Solemn Requiem Mass at Chun of tho Nativity, iuwruivnt at New Cathedral Cemetery, LINDEN AND WASHINGTON An Initial Hay's liuting That Was Filled With Many Surprises four Out of the 'ive Favorites Hump Home Easy Wiu ITER a siege of bad weather the racas at Glouc yesterday were greeted by fine elements and the people responded, fully making their way, during the afternoon, to the pretty track.

The card arranged was a good one, and it proved productive of some good sport, in which the iinooiuiiuties of horsc raeine were amply illustrated. Tho track was very heavy and the horses soon tired, making the time, anything but fast. Surprises were tho rule, but there was none that caused such consternation as the defeat of Sea Bird in the second race. This usually reliable horse showed the effects of the hard work she has done lately, and when she came up tho stretch she was winded. Doano did not have the strength to keep her straight, and she swerved badly, allowing ('raft, an 8 to 1 shot, to slip by her and win.

This made the backers very cautious, but they stuck to it manfully during the remainder of the day, with but varying success. Ceawood carried heaps of money for the first event, but he weut down before Fred Taral, who could be bought all over tho ring at odds varying from to 10 to 1. Then came the Sea Bird dump but in the next race the talent retrieved some of their lost fortunes, for although Tyrone was the favorite, Question, the winner, was heavily backed at 'A and 2 to 1. Their triumph was shortlived, however, for again did the favorite spill their money in the fourth ovent. Alarming and Jewel II.

divided tho odds for the favorite plare in the race, but A. (). who seemed to have been neglected by the public, proved bis worth by winning in grand stylo over the field. Those who had his tickets cashed in for 1. Macbeth had everything his own way in the betting for the last nice, and ho also bad it on the track, for he won easily from William Daly, Jr.

Mrs. George Murkct was awakened at 3 o'clock this morning by dense smoke in her room and aroused Thomas Christopher, who was sleeping in the house. Ho fired a number of shots to arouse the neighbors and they found that abedtick had been set on flro In a second story room directly over the bod in which Mrs. Murket was lying, and it had burned through the floor into her room. The roof was also on flic in several places, but the building was saved from any great damage.

The tire had been started through an opening left by carpenters in repairing the house. Some time ago Mrs. Murket was tortured and robbed by two men and again the same parties entered her house, assaulted and tortured her and left her in a critical condition, from which she is still prostrated and likely never to recover. The secondtime she recognized them as two neighbors, John Mean and Ren ben Rowers, and had them arrested. Bowers is still in jail, but Dean was recently released on, bail.
