The Evening Sun Sunday, October 24, 1993 7 I it it ns it it wi ii i IhllM Twister Alleys taking country by storm New Years ala Stern rsADIO bad boy Howard I JtStern is returning to the Ullpay-per-view arena with The Miss Howard Stern New Years Eve Pageant a $40 live event that one PPV executive estimated will generate $6 million in business in one night. Stern was reportedly guaranteed a minimum of $1 million by the events producer. The event will be telecast live from the Atlantic City (N.J.) Convention Center beginning at 11 p.m. (ET) Dec. 31 and repeated at 11 p.m.

(PT). Stern whose racy humor has brought down the wrath of the Federal Communications Commission, which levied record fines on several radio stations carrying his program will be joined at the event by his morning-show cohorts Robin Quivers, Jackie Martling and Gary Alley right smack in the Heart of country music. Not only do Morris and Hitt resemble rock divas Ann and Nancy Wilson, their music has a rock edge to it that translates into country dance music. Weve been together so long, were like a family, says Morris, who has been singing with the group since she was 9. Morris has a gutsy vocal style that invites comparisons to Tanya Tucker.

Hitt contributes a softer background voice and a style of guitar that adds sensual rhythm. The groups Arkansas roots are definitely an asset, they say. But when asked if having an Arkansan in the White House has helped them, Morris, who has a pet pig named Sally, laughs. Well, I dont know, she says. Not these days.

I guess it just depends on who you talk to. But were down-home Southern kids and we dont know anyway but to be friendly to people. Hitt grimaces: They try to feed us fancy food, and we cant hardly stand it. By JAMES DICKERSON TWO years ago Shellee Morris was driving a tractor in the hayfields of rural northeast Arkansas and Amy Hitt was teaching preschoolers how to write their names. Then along came record producer Mike Lawler, who whisked them up, along with the four guys in their garage band, and transported them to Nashville.

Lawler, best known for his keyboard wizardry with Steve Win-wood and the Allman Brothers, found them a new look, a new musical style and a new name, Twister Alley Today Morris, 19, and Hitt, 26, are living a dream. After recording their first album, they hit the road this summer, opening for superstars like Billy Ray Cyrus. Were the hillbillies, says Hitt, the guitarist and background vocalist. And Lawlers the techno-pop undercurrent, explains Morris. We didnt look like this either.

We were kinda plain and down home. Lawlers vision put Twister Twister Alley bU on had consequences and a runaway big brother qualified as a mature theme about family politics only added to the appeal. Now theres enough interest to export the new cartoon to Russia, and pent-up product demand has prompted a slew of merchandising. Like its ancestor, the new series maintains larger-than-life plot lines that race from the future to the past and back again, and explore all manner of evil. In fact, probably the most notable change is in wardrobe: emblazoned on the front of Speeds new uniform is a big 5 (as in Mach 5).

In the original Japanese version, the characters name was Go Mifune, prompting an enigmatic alphabet soup of a on Speeds jersey, and an on his helmet. Certainly, with a car like the Mach 5, the letters didnt represent that other GM. That much, we presume, the Japanese did foresee. By DIANE BAILEY fHEN the Japanese made Speed Racer back in 1965, they punctuated it with frequent grunts and groans by Speed and his best gal Trixie. They had no way of knowing that in 1993, those seemingly innocuous utterances would end up representing sex sounds in a Billboard-charted, dance mix techno-rave tune based upon the now-retro cartoons theme music.

Then again, who woulda thunk that Speed Ravers would be just one spin-off audience in a cultish cast of millions who know Speed and all 52 of his adventures inside out? Featuring a boy and his bitchin car, Speed Racer came to the United States in 1967 and immediately became a syndicated rolling stone. Despite crude cartoonage and no new episodes, the show gathered audience and top ratings for the next Asian import races into cult status 20 years. Now Speed and his car the Mach 5 have reappeared on MTV and James Rocknowski of Speed Racer Enterprises, who grew up watching Speed, has spearheaded The New Adventures of Speed Racer, now airing in syndication. What exactly is so addictive about a guy, his girlfriend, his family and a monkey? Rocknowski says theres a fanatical following because there were enough episodes to support a daily strip hooking those afterschoolers. And heavyweight stuff that some considered too sophisticated for youth audiences violence Suzanne Somers tests the talk show waters MomGTKSF SUZANNE Somers is the latest in a long line of celebrities who have decided to delve into the widely populated talk show arena.

The Suzanne Somers Show will be launched in syndication during the fall of 1994. This combination talkenter-tainment show will focus on Somers leading special guests and celebrities in conversations aimed at providing helpful information and possible solutions to the daily concerns being addressed. Somers, however, wont let talk interfere with entertainment. The Las Vegas entertainer and star of the ABC sitcom Step By Step will frequently perform, backed up by a live band. Hosting a meaningful talk show is something I have always wanted to do, Somers commented.
