Not three miles sway from where Cherubino Ferrascl was bom in the I tali ah -Swiss countryside of Canton Ticino near Locarno, Switzerland, the Madonna of the Rock, Madonna del Sasso, first appeared to a Franciscan Monk in the year 1480, on the Feast of the Assumption, Aug.

15. Today, a basilica marks the place of her appearance, and Ferrasci lives in Salinas where many of his countrymen congregate annually to celebrate Swiss Independence Day just as they will tomorrow in Greenfield. So great is the- devotion of Italian-Swiss for the Madonna del Sasso and the many miracles attributed to her, that thousands of pilgrims throng to her basilica in Switzerland, where high above the altar a statue of her has been placed. Padre Pietro DAscona, superior provincial of the Franciscan Order in Switzerland wrote to Mr. Ferrasci suggesting that a suitable place for a similar statue be located in California as a means of perpetuating the devotion of Italian-Swiss everywhere.

Each night. Capuchin monks lowered the Madonnas statue from above the basilica altar, and carved a replica, matching every detail of the treasured original. Meanwhile, in California, a society was formed in 1950, with Mr. Ferrasci as president. With church approval, the society made $lans to build a sanctuary, as the mb gathered regularly in devotion to the Madonna del Sasso.

In 1951, the statue of the Madonna del Sasso was flown to America and temporarily enshrined in the Holy Trinity church of Greenfield. Tomorrow, the annual procession in her honor will take place there. But, today, almost 200 men are taking action that will lead someday to the pilgrimage and prosession taking place in North Salinas. The society, wishing to bringth the sanctuary closer to the devotees, has purchased a site for an entire parish plant and given it to the bishop of Fresno and Monterey as a place for the Madonna del Sasso church to be located. The men of the fund organization under General Chairman Fer- rasci and George Benoit will conduct a parish wide solicitation for funds to build a school on the site, followed later by a convent and finally by the church.

Yes Mr. Ferrasci has not been to Switzerland for thirty-five years, but once again, not three miles from where he lives, the Madonna del Sasso' statue and an altar for her devout followers will be raised. He noted that never before, in his opinion, has Salinas had a team that could match the quality of baseball that the Packers have demonstrated this season. Tight difficult plays that match big league brand of ball have thrilled the spectators and "story book" endings have not been uncommon. He reminded his listeners that Salinas has a top division team as promised and can climb right to the top again. With better than a 500 ball club, he said he understood that spectators would turn out in numbers sufficient to keep the Packers in the black, but such has not been the case and he appealed for better support.

Guests present were Ernie Olson, sports editor of the Californian; Bill Harami of the Valley Center club, Roger Barnhart, Albert Wojhan and Ens. Richard Daniels. Camp finance chairman George Sargenti gave the final report on camperships collected to send deserving boys to camp. Chief of Police Ray McIntyres team was congratulated for collecting more funds than the other three teams. President C.
