The Capital Times 5A Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000 Tower Norquist, Watts for mayor higher density project on your development site we cannot support the scale and massing which has been proposed," said Olinger in a letter to Alexander. The property at 515 N. Lake St. is owned by Banaszak and Ulrich properties of Cross Plains.

It had been leased to Centeon Bio-Services, a plasma collection center, which relocated to Williamson Street in November. The property is assessed for property tax purposes at $797,000. The parcel last changed hands in 1978 when it sold for $430,000. In addition to the density issue, Olinger said the building may also conflict with the Capitol View Preservation Ordinance, which restricts building heights to 187 feet. In 1988, the UW had been forced to alter a planned expansion of the Memorial Library because the top floor would have blocked the view from Bascom Hill to the Capitol.

But Alexander said his building would only be slightly taller than the Memorial Library and would not block the Capitol view. The market for higher quality downtown rental housmg has been strong. Recent apartment projects completed in the campus area in- Gov. Tommy Thompson said he was happy for his brother and wished -him well the general election. The governor also had some campaign advice for his brother.

I told him he should be out there the next day pounding on doors and asking people to vote for him. Thats how you win. Ed Thompson, 55, owns Mr. Eds Tee Pee supper club, but he has a vaned background that includes playing professional poker in Las Vegas, woiking on a railroad, selling real estate and mutual funds, and plowing snow for Juneau County. Thompson also has had some run-ins with the law.

Police raided his supper club in 1997 for allegedly havmg illegal video gambling machines. However, prosecutors could not find an impartial jury and Thompson settled out of court, agreeing to pay $800 for law enforcements costs to investigate his tavern and to operate no video poker machines for two years. Thompson celebrated his primary win Tuesday at the Norquists support of building a light rail system. This was an enormous protest vote against Norquist and his whole 12-year incumbency, Watts said after the vote. If hes a patriot at all, he should get out there and defend his record.

Govs brother tops vote: TOMAH, Wis. Ed Thompson, the governors younger brother, jumped the preliminary hurdle in his bid to become Tomahs next mayor, winning enough votes Tuesday in a primary to qualify for the general election. Thompson faces incumbent Mayor Bud Johnson in the April 4 election for the nonpartisan position. Thompson received 678 votes, while Johnson got 376 votes Tuesdays primary. They beat Aid.

Thomas Hillman and William McLoughlin, a high school senior, for the top spots. I think people trust me and I think they may be looking for a change, Thompson said. Im overwhelmed; I never thought it would be that much of a victory. Associated Press Milwaukee Mayor John Norquist and businessman George Watts beat retired crane operator Wendell Harris in a mayoral primary Tuesday, moving on to face each other in the general election. With all wards reporting, Norquist won 21,674, or 52 percent, of the votes; Watts had 12,432 votes, or 30 percent; and Harris had 7,624 votes, or 18 percent.

Thanks to the voters of Milwaukee for their vote of confidence today, Norquist said. They sent a message today to those who want to tear down Milwaukee for political gain. The general election is April 4. Norquist, an advocate of land use reform who wrote a 1998 book on urban planning, pointed to his record of keeping down property taxes and fighting drug pushers and other criminals. He is serving his third term as mayor, a nonpartisan position.

Watts has questioned Norqu-ist's statistics on crime and taxes and has attacked Norquist for being lukewarm in his support of law enforcement and downtown businesses. He has also cnticized Continued from Page 1A Alexander said he has no plans to alter the design and will attempt to work through the Plan Commission to generate support for the project. He noted the Isthmus 2020 land use plan calls for more dense housing downtown. Once we present the details, I think the commission will see the wisdom of what were trying to do here," said Alexander in an interview today. A key issue in assessing the proposal is housing density, or the number of units per acre of land.

In recent years, the planning department has supported projects on Langdon Street that have ranged from four to eight stories. Some have included densities from 60 units per acre to slightly more than 200 per acre. But the proposal from Alexander would result in a density of 655 units per acre, which Olinger said goes far beyond what the city could support. While we could support a elude the 39-unit City Place Apartments on the 400 block of West Main Street and the 66-unit Butler Plaza at Butler Street and East Washington Avenue. The Alexander tower would have 98 one- to three-bedroom apartments for a total of 174 bedrooms, with 3,200 square feet of retail space on the first floor.

Only 10 parking stalls would be provided. The tower would have a rooftop sky garden and computer-related and other amenities for student tenants. Alexander said he wont seek financial support from the city. He said he hopes to break ground in the spring and complete the building in the spring of 2002.
