Indiana Gazette, Family Leisure, Saturday, August 8, Dee Snider: unlikely candidate to advise teens By STEPHANIE ZVIRIN Cover To Cover did, refreshingly unaffected memories of his own growing-up, the book tackles everything from developing a strong self-concept and handling problems with parents, to American Library Assn. DEE SNIDER'S TEENAGE SURVIVAL GUIDE: OR HOW TO BE A LEGEND IN YOUR OWN LUNCH TIME By Dee Snider and Philip Bashe DolphuiDoubleday $15.95 and 88.95, paper. 240 pages Grades 10 to 12. The last few years have seen a trend toward books helping teens deal more knowledgeably and con- fidently with special problems ot their adolescent lives from love and sex to suicide, alcoholism and getting along with parents. With tattooed arms and bleached blond hair down Ins back, Dee Snider singersongwriter and the force behind the heavy metal band "Twisted Sister" seems an unlikely source for self-help advice.

Yet that is what he and coauthor Philip Bashe offer in "Dee Snider's Teenage Survival Guide: Or How to be a Legend in Your Own Lunch Time," a manual on how to survive adolescence. Delivered in Snider's voice, and punctuated with humor and can teenage marriage, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, sex, and unplanned pregnancy. But the authors introduce most of the major concerns for today's teens while combining the comic and anecdotal without losing sight of their serious message- Avoiding PETER PAN CREAMY II 'MS IB SAN GIORGIO PRE SWEETENED KOOL-AID PEANUT BUTTER 1mnl regular or thin SPAGHETTI lS II SPAGHETTI Ik JAM? 5159 Mi8" COD HTRY TIME LEMONADE wsraBOnssAum ff, I vVfJ I I oaihy fresh DRESSING 88tJ jS cTI lUUL288 CHEF BOV-AR-DEE BEEF RAVIOLI MM OMITS ALL FLAVOR (GsL) 119 SrHtVU'. Saul Levine and Kathleen Wilcox both M.D.s aim to smooth the difficult passage between adolescence and adulthood, but their approach is different. "Dear Doctor" is a question-answer compendium of 300 letters written by 12- to 20-year-olds and pulled from submissions to the authors' syndicated "Youth Clinic" column. The doctors respond candidly and non-judgmentally to a wide range of teens' emotional, social, psychological, medical and developmental concerns. They mix expertise and personal opinion with reassurance, up-to-date medical and frequent nudges toward professional counsel. Some topics are controversial, as are some of the doctors' responses.

But teens will gravitate toward the anonymity and informality of the book, and although they may not always come away with the answers they want, they'll surely come away feeling less alone. SAFE, STRONG, STREETWISE By Helen Benedict Joy Street Books (Little Brown) $13.95 and $495, paper. 192 pages. "Safe, Strong, Streetwise" is a self-help book of an unusual sort. Helen Benedict wants to equip young people with practical guidelines to help them recognize and avoid sexual assualt.

Although Benedict acknowledges the value of physical defense, and even describes some, she stresses the best defense begins with how a person looks and feels. "If you stand and move with confidence, look danger in the eye, and appear alert, you are already frightening off many a potential assailant." She offers advice on how to appear less open to attack and how to protect against and handle a variety of situations that might occur. (Newspaper Enterprise Asn.l Top 10 Books FICTION 1.
