THE TIMES PHILADELPHIA SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 14, 1882. THE CHESS BOARD. YICTORT! COMPARISON Of nr prices with those of Cash and Instalment Houses will prove them to be bnt verj little highsr than those of the former and fully 25 per cent, lower than those of the latter. We do not follow the practice adopted Instalment or Self Stj led Credit Houses of advertising our prices to be lower, or even as low, as those of strictly cash dealers, as we believe the public sufficiently intelligent to recognize at once the impossibility of selling goods on long credit quite as low as those who receive immediate cash payment tor the same. Hut in admitting that our prices are somewhat higher than those of cash dealers, we at the same time assert that the advance is so slight as scarcely to be noticeable, and certainly not adequate to the accommodation oii'ereil, while we repeat most emphatically that our prices are fully S3 Jer cent, lower than those of nstalmcnt Houses.

FINE CLOTHING For Men's, Yontlis', Boys' and Cltildren's Wear. Our Stock in this Department, cannot be surpassed in Variety of Style, Reliability of Material, Tliorough ness of Workmanship, Perfection of Fit or Elegance of Finish by that of any house in the city. It embraces all reliable grades of goods, made from all kinds of fabrics, to sell at all manner of prices. For Men's and Youths' Wear we offer Suits for Dress, Suits for Business, Suits for Travel, and a full line of Light Weight Overcoats for Damp Daysand Chilly Evenings. For the Boys we have Dress, School and Knoclc about Suits; and for still smaller Folks a full line of Kilt and Blouse Suits, DRESS FABRICS.

Our assortment of the above goods is one of the finest in the city, and embraces ail the lat est, most fashionable and most desirable effects in coloring, texture and design. Of those composed entirely of Silk we will mention Satin de Lyons, Satin MerveUleux, Satin Itha dames, Gros Grains, Surahs, Foulards, Louisines, Moires, Brocades, Damassen, Pongees, Grenadines and llernanis, of Fine Wool, Plain, Lace and Jirocade Nun' sVeilingSfCrapes, Cashmeres, Buntings, Debeiyes, Fine Flannels, Cc. In combinations of Silk and Wool we have all the old favorites in addtion to many strikingly handsome Novelties never before offered in this city, The VICTORY FLOUR, which I have advertised so freely and sold all over the city and surrounding country, is not to be had of any other Grocer or Flour Dealer in Philadelphia. Others, branded Victory, are in the market, but of inferior quality. One Dealer has not only gone to Grocers and offered Victory Flour as the same as that sold by E.

BRADFORD CLARKE, but boasted that he sold the same to me. I take this opportunity to say to the Public that, during the two years that I have sold this Flour, no other Dealer has had it or could get it. Every barrel has come to me direct from one of the great Mills in the West, and not a barrel of it have I ever received except by the car load from the miller. Any Dealer, other than myself, who offers to his customers Flour branded Victory, and represents it to be the same as sold by me, utters a falsehood and deceives his Patrons. I AM IN RECEIPT OF A CAR LOAD, 125 BARRELS, EYERY TWO WEEKS.

E. BRADFORD CLARKE, BROAD AND CHESTNUT. STOCKS AND BONDS. The Market Duller Than Erer. bat Prices Fractionally lniprov ed.

The tone of the market yesterday was undeniably strong from the opening to the close, but when that has been said all has been said that is worth saying. So far as business is concerned matters are getting worse. Trading was dull enongh on Friday, but it was duller yesterday. There was little life and no interesting feature in the market at any period of the day. Nevertheless, prices were strong and advanced fractionally.

This appeared to be rather due to the fact that nobody cared to take the risk of selling the market rather than to any particular demand for stocks. In fact it was a broker's market, and a retail market of the smallest proportions at that. The fact that the New York bank statement did not show as great a falling off in reserves as hail been expected in view of the gold shipment of the week afforded some little comfort for the bulls, but the strength of the day was probably due to the covering of contracts by tho small traders who arc afraid to carry any risks over Sunday. Whatever the cause, the market was strung, and brokers and peculators on the bull side went home somewhat relieved from the gloom which has hung over them so long. All the principal stocks showed an advance for the day ranging from 1 to per cent.

There is, however, nothing in the general speculative situation to create the belief that a bull movement is at hand. This, ot course, leaves out of the calculation what the big manipulators may see fit to do, which nobody can guess. The fact that the market lias stood so firm amid all the dullness gives ground for hope that when a pronounced movement does come it will be in the direction of better prices. Tho market at the closo was quoted steady and dull. Tho total sales amounted to shares, against 17,337 shares on Friday.

Ex Governor Bedle. of Jersey City; A. (i. liichey, of Trenton, and James E.

(Jowen, of Philadelphia, appeared for E. C. Knight and others in the (iarrett Gowen interest. Thomas N. McCarter, of Newark, appeared for G.

G. Haven, Frederick A. Potts and other stockholders, and Benjamin Williamson, of Elizabeth, for the directors. Mr. Williamson said that in behalf of the directors he had no opposition to make to any order the Court might make, but that they would cheerlully obey any order of the Court.

Mr. McCarter insisted that the Court had no power to order an election of directors, as the road is not insolvent, and there was no provision of the law authorizing the Chancellor to take such action. Messrs. Bedle, Kiehey and Gowen contended that the Court had full power to order an election and to fix the time, place and manner of holding an election, to appoint the inspectors and determine who was entitled to vote, and that it was only put to the stockholders that they should have an opiiortunity to say who should constitute the Board of liireetors. They also insisted that as the road is now in a position to be turned over to the stockholders it was doubly important that before it was turned over they should have the opportunity to say who should constitute the board to whom the road should be turned over.

Chancellor Kunyon took the papers and reserved his decision, saying he would decide the case at an early day. At the close of business yesterday United ftates called bonds had been redeemed at the Treasury as follows Under the HKith call, 819,543,750 under 'the 107th call, 817,095,050 under the losth call, 817,652,950 under the 109th cail, under the 110th call, 13,107.900. The Comptroller of the Currency has written the following letter to lisk Hatch, New York: "Your letter of the 10th instant is received and contents noted. I can see no objection to the proposition for the gradual charging off by national banks of the amount of premiums paid upon United Stales bonds deposited for circulation, and hereafter national banks holding 4 per coiit. bonds will be instructed to rharge olf each yearone twentietli part of theaiuouiit of premium paid thereou and counted as an asset; those holding i'ia will be instructed to charge off in a similar maimer one tenth of the premium, and those holding currency 6s fo charge oil' say one fifteenth in each ease one half of the yearly amount to be charged oil' semi annually previous to the usual date for the declaration of dividends.

This is to be done with the understanding that at no time shall the amount of premium counted as an asset exceed the market premium of the bonds held." IMPORTERS AND RETAILERS I MILLINERY. The choice line of goods displayed in this Department cannot fail to meet the requirements of all tastes, no matter how exacting. It embraces a full assortment of the Newest and Most Fashionable Shapes in Bonnets and Hals, both Trimmed and Bare. Those imported by us from Paris, while very handsome, are not, we think, worthy of greater praise than are the artistic productions of our own Milliners, while the latter are of course much lower in irice. In Millinery Goods we offer a full line of Feathers, Flowers, Bibbons, Luces and Ornaments of all kinds.

We keep also a choice selection of Infants' Caps. SI lsil3. Oitf English Oxford Mow Ieadij Sfcigwwfllf, CONFECTIONERY I The Bace for Second Prise at the Toarna mrat Cheea Notes.
