W. H. Bruce, president emeritus of North Texas State Teachers College, when he was a Blanco High School director is described in an article appearing in a recent issue of the magazine, "Frontier Times," which pays tribute to tile work of Dr. Bruce as a. pioneer educator in Texas.

The hanging occurred after Dr. Uruce took charge of Blanco High School when it was created in 1884, Inking with him to Blanco his wife and two sisters who, says U. Taylor, of the article, "by their gracious influence did much for the culture of the community." From the so-called "Lackey trng- edy" historian Taylor draws the lesson that Dr. Bruce was typical of the new era in education in Texas and that the hanging was an indication that the age of the killer in Texas was already "dead or dying." Tlie incident occurred itl August. 1888, when Al Lackey, apparently crazed, saddled his horse, look ills rifle, ami started out to "exterminate all his kith and kin." Before nightfall he had slain sis people: his niece, whom lie shot to death ns she was rocking her baby; his own brother; an aged couple named Stokes: his daughter, and another relative.
