The Weekend of April 20-21, 1996 The Capital Times 5E RELIGION Gordon Govier EngagementsWeddings For good reading, check out Bibles Anniversaries Engagements Kicking up the dust on the gravel road near our home, I spotted a glint of treasure in the early morning sun. I bent down and picked up a rock with a strangely attractive yellowish sparkle. My brother, who was three years older and much wiser, told me it looked like gold. In which case, he explained, we would be very rich. We found several of the little nuggets and took them home.

After fielding questions about the dangers of travel with members of my Israel tour group, I checked out Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and its Consequences, by John Allen Paulos, Paulos observes that the chance of dying in a car crash is about one in 5,300, while the chance of a fatal encounter with a terrorist is one in 1 .6 million. Some futurists are predicting that books will become obsolete as digital data takes over. I wouldnt write the obituary just yet. What computers have done, unquestionably, is make a lot more information readily available. In the case of the worlds best seller, it has led to a new Sippola-Cruz Gary and Mary Sippola, Madison, announce the engagement of their daughter, Wendy Belle, to Justin Biagio Cruz, son of Ben Cruz, Oregon, and Patricia Rizzo, Chicago.

Agard-Sargent Announcement is made of the engagement of Melissa Kristen Agard and Justin Scott Sargent. She is the daughter of Steven and Mary Agard, Madison, and Alan Levine and Catherine Loughran, San Francisco. His parents are Jerry Sargent, Chicago, and Joyce Sargent, Madison.

Both are graduates of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she in psychology and he in political science. She is a business manager for Hyperion Studios. He is a legislative aide for Sen. Chuck Chvala. Ettners of Madison to mark 50 years Bob and Val Ettner will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sunday, April 28, at Muskie Lounge and Crab House, 6312 Metropoliton Lane. Ettner married Val Slette April 27, 1946, in Bethel Lutheran Church. They have two sons, John and Gary, both of Madison. One son, Tom, is deceased. 1 Mathisons will celebrate 25th Arvid and Linda Mathison, Rockdale, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house at 6:30 p.m., followed by a dance at 8 p.m.

Saturday, April 27, at Lake Ripley Country Club, Cambridge. All family and friends are invited. No formal invitations are being sent. Mathison and Linda Hommen were married Feb. 6, 1971, in Grace Lutheran Church, Cambridge.

Their children are Todd, Rockdale, and Jill, Madison. Our fantasies were soon punctured when we learned they were only iron pyrites, also known as fools gold. Much of life is determining which of our discoveries are real gold and which are fools gold. On the other hand, valuable resources can often be taken for granted and overlooked. It was not long after I learned to read that I realized the public library had stacks and stacks of nuggets just waiting 10 be discovered.

I spent many hours stalking the shelves of the Wa-couta Memorial Library in Prairie du Chien deciding 4 what to explore next. I still remember devouring 4 Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs late into the night. It was the first book I found impossible to put down. In the summers I would visit by grandmother in Lancaster, a vacation filled with new books from a new library. I was the only kid I knew with two library cards.

I familiarized myself with the Dewey Decimal System by cataloging my own collection of books. Eventually, visits to the library became rare. Finding the time to read became one of the biggest challenges in my busy life. Periodicals seemed to take top priority. But then the computer changed that.

Now I dont need two library cards. The one I have gives me access to libraries all over south-central Wisconsin. And I can find out whats in them with just a phone call. Recently I decided that it would be a long time before Id be able to sit down with Exodus," by Leon Uris. So I logged onto LINKcat, the Library Interchange NetworK (261-9124, log in with library).

1 looked up the 1960 Otto Preminger movie, starring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint, and ordered it. A couple of days later I stopped by the Monona library and checked it out. Having the card catalog online has presented an enormous temptation. Ive found myself back in the Monona Public Library more than I expected, and not just to borrow videos. The one book I make time for on a daily basis, for three decades now, is the Bible.

Like the Psalmist, Ive found it a lamp to guide my feet and a light on my path. Last year, for a change, I picked up the Narrated Bible, the New International Version rearranged in chronological order. It gave me a fascinating new perspective on the Story of the Ages. When I finish it, in another month or so, Ill be able to choose from an ever-growing list of new Bibles, all with the same basic text but in slightly different translations and with widely varying support materials. The April 8 edition of Christianity Today lists some of the latest examples: the Hebrew-Greek Key Study Bible, the Parents Resource Bible, the Womans Study Bible, the True Love Waits Bible (for teens) and the Inspirational Study Bible (edited by best-selling author Max Lucado).

There seem to be dozens more each year. National Library Week is a good time to salute the joy of reading. The public library is truly one of the pleasures of every city that has one. But the public library pales in comparison to the book of books. Tyrants have tried to destroy it, many men and women have given their lives to it and for it.

Its endurance for two milleniums is a testament to its power to not only inspire and inform but to transform. The author Robert Pollok called the Bible Star of Eternity! The only star by which the bark of man could navigate the sea of life, and gain the coast of bliss securely. Thats a genuine treasure. Todays deal was defended perfectly by Julius Rosenblum, ex-president of the World Bridge Federation, and Constant Fua. Defending against three hearts, Fua led the spade four. (Most experts these days, as they had supported their partner, would select the seven.) Rosenblum won with the spade queen and switched accurately to the diamond jack. He had dummys top diamond, the 10, sandwiched by his jack and nine, plus he had a higher non-touching honor in the ace. So he led the card directly above dummys top card, a classic surrounding play.
