Jarred Picarelli, (left) 11-month-old son of Sandy and Gil Picarelli, was crowned the winner, receiving a Wal-Mart gift certificate. The event kicks off the busiest recruitment period for WalkAmerica for Healthier Babies which will be held Sunday, April 26. The walk is the countrys oldest, largest and most successful walking event, supported by more than 800,000 walkers nationwide. In Adams County, funds support programs that include a youth educator to combat teen pregnancy; extended prenatal services for the migrant community; and an education program for the work force.

Earl Coleman WESTMINSTER Earl Hess Coleman, 82, of Westminster died Monday, April 6, 1992, at the Westminster Nursing and Convalescent Center after an extended illness. Bom Dec. 5, 1909, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Robert and Emma Mae Stockman Coleman.

He was the husband of Doris K. Bartholomew Coleman. Mr. Coleman retired as a pressman for Waverly Inc. of Baltimore.

He was a member of the Masons Mystic Circle Lodge in Baltimore, volunteered at Carroll County General Hospital and was a member of the Westminster United Methodist Church. Surviving also are two daughters, Jeannette Coleman Turlington of Lithicum and Elaine Coleman Breitenbach of Hampstead; four grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family. The funeral service will be held 1 1 a.m. Thursday at the Pritts Funeral Home Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with the Rev.

Dr. Robert Zimmerli officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Baltimore. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster United Methodist Church, 165 E. Main Westminster, MD 21157. Byron H. Nowell ROCKY RIDGE U.S. Navy Captain Retired Byron Home Nowell, 78, of 14029 Frushour Road, Rocky Ridge, died Monday, April 6, 1992, at the Frederick Memorial Hospital.

Born April 24, 1913, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he was the son of the late Ambrey and Clare Leone Home Nowell. He was the husband of Phyllis Mathias Nowell. Mr. Nowell graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy on June 6, 1935 as an active duty naval officer.

He served as a submarine commander in the Pacific during World War II. He retired as captain on April 13, 1948. He then was a civil servant employee at Fort De-trick, retiring in 1968. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Thurmont, the Submarine Veterans and the Retired Officers Association.

Surviving also are three sons, Douglas Spencer Nowell of Annapolis, Daniel Mathias Nowell of Thurmont and David Yingling Nowell of Annapolis; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Nowell Smith of Belmont, Mass, and Leone Nowell Young of Salt Lake City, Utah; one brother, John Spencer Nowell of Salt Lake City, Utah. He was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Nowell. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Johns Lutheran Church, 15 N.

Church Thurmont. His pastor, the Rev. William H. Peacock will officiate. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the Robert E. Dailey Son Funeral Home, 615 E. Main Thurmont, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St.

tonight at the GAR Building, Middle Anna Mae Sloat GETTYSBURG Anna Mae Sloat, 87, of Green Acres Nursing Home, Gettysburg, died Tuesday, April 7, 1992, at Gettysburg Hospital. Born in Spring Grove, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Mary Eppley Miller. She was the wife of the late Roy W. Sloat who died in 1977. She was the former wife of the late Rev.

Paul Hyser. Mrs. Sloat was a member of the York Gospel Center. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Morehead of Hellam and Ruth Anna Pete of York; five sons, Paul Hyser Jr. and Ervin Hyser, both of Hanover, Clarence Hyser of Mechanicsburg, Richard Hyser of Newville and David Hyser of Ger-mansdale; 32 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; five brothers, Harvey Miller and George Miller, both of Hanover, Paul Miller of Manchester, William Miller of Littlestown, and Ervin Miller of Harrisburg; three sisters, Elizabeth Wright and Elsie Lucken-baugh, both of Hanover, and Florence Hillyard of Gettysburg.

The funeral service will be held 1 1 a.m. Friday at Wetzel Funeral Home 549 Carlisle Hanover. The Rev. Samuel A. Garrett of Bethel Assembly of God in Littlestown will officiate.

Maryland W. Victor Gragg WESTMINSTER W. Victor Vic Gragg, 64, of Westminster, formerly of Dundalk, died Monday evening, April 6, 1992, at Carroll County General Hospital. Born in Raywood, W.Va., he was the son of the late Simpson Fisher and Odessa Mary Alice Ryder Gragg. He was the husband of Betty J.

Long Gragg. He was predeceased by his children, Gerald Cheryl J. and Lawrence E. Gragg and the brother of the late Simpson Fisher Gragg Jr. who died in 1987.

He was a corporal in the United States Army during World War II where he was a mechanic. He had worked at Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point where he was a mechanic foreman retiring in 1983. Surviving also are two daughters, Mary G. DeBaufre of Carny and Diane M. Gragg of Baltimore; one sister.

Ivy Louise Gragg of Elkins, W.Va. and two grandsons. The funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday from Myers Funeral Home, 91 Willis Westminster, with the Rev. Charles Stanfield, of Pleasant Valley United Church of Christ, officiating.

Police log a man and a woman was reported in the 400 block of Broadway. Charges of harassment are pending against a 20-year-old Adams County man. 4 p.m. Charges of retail theft are pending against two Bethlehem youth, ages 13 and 14, in connection with thefts which occurred at the North Hanover Mall. 9:27 p.m.

Suspicious persons in a vehicle were reported in the area of the 500 block of York Street. TODAY 1:14 a.m. A domestic disturbance was reported between a male and female at the rear of the 100 block of Carlisle Street. A 22-year-old Hanover man was cited and released for disorderly conduct. Theresa Koch, 19, 628 Fulton Hanover, was arraigned before the duty magistrate on charges of disorderly conduct and underage drinking, and committed to York County Prison in lieu of bail.

PENN TOWNSHIP POLICE TUESDAY 4:21 p.m. A domestic disturbance between a mother and son was reported in the 800 block of Alvin Street. 4:46 p.m. A domestic disturbance between a boyfriend and girlfriend was reported in the 600 block of Baer Avenue. TODAY 12:35 a.m.

A domestic disturbance between a father and two daughters was reported in the 400 block of South High Street. McSHERRYSTOWN POLICE TUESDAY 3:25 p.m. The theft of a black rubber cover from the rear bed of a pickup truck was reported in the 600 block of South Street. The item was recovered at 8:35 p.m. and was returned to its owner.

TODAY 2:35 a.m. An officer on patrol noticed lights on and windows open at a business in the 100 block of South Second Street. Management personnel were notified and the building was secured. LITTLESTOWN POLICE TUESDAY Charges of driving under the influence are pending against a Littlestown man following a vehicle stop on North Queen Street. CUMBERLAND TWP.

POLICE MONDAY 3 p.m. Sheryl Truan of Gettysburg reported that someone scratched the front, rear and side of her vehicle while it was parked at her residence. 5 p.m. David Reaver of Sachs Mill Road reported that someone damaged his mailbox. TUESDAY 10:05 a.m.

Patricia Miller of Guilford, N.Y., was traveling north on U.S. Route 15, when a deer ran across the road and struck her vehicle, causing damage. Miller was taken to Hospital for treatment of Penn police say fire was a 'definite arson' PENN TWP. A fire discovered in the York Village Apartments, West Alvin Street, on Feb. 7, 1992, has been ruled a definite arson, according to Penn Township police.

Police said the findings are the result of an ongoing investigation conducted by Penn Township police, Grangeville Fire Co. chief and the state police lab. The fire occurred at 3:12 a.m. Feb. 7, police said, and no arrests are pending at this time.

The investigation is continuing. Co. and, ambulance responded to a vehicle accident on Route 15, three miles south of the Route 30 interchange, returned to quarters at 10:06 a.m.; 4:44 p.m. York Springs, Mount Holly and Franklin fire companies were dispatched to a brush fire at 21 1 Hollow Road, returned to quarters at 7:17 p.m.; 4:58 p.m. Bendersville and Aspers fire companies responded to a brush fire at 861 Peach Glen-ldaville Road, returned to quarters at 5:34 p.m.; 4:59 p.m.

Heidlersburg and York Springs fire companies were dispatched to a brush fire in the 2000 block of County Line Road, returned to quarters at 7:35 p.m.; 7:33 p.m. Gettysburg Fire Co. and ambulance responded to a vehicle accident on Old Harrisburg Road in front of WGTY radio station, returned to quarters at 8:24 p.m. Pallbearers Pallbearers for the late Pearl E. Red Cross seeks volunteers HANOVER The Hanover Chapter of the American Red Cross is seeking volunteers for their disaster program. Every year, fires, floods, tornadoes and other natural disasters randomly strike thousands of families. The chapter is seeking committed individuals who want to help their neighbor in their time of need.

Red Cross training is provided at no cost to the volunteer. To find out how to participate, call the Hanover Chapter at 637-3768. Forestry scholarship YORK Boys or girls between the ages of 12-15 considering a career in forestry or a forestry related industry should attend the Youth Forestry Camp being organized by the Endless Mountains Resource Conservation and Development Council. The four-day camp will introduce the basic principles of forestry management. Exercises are conducted in both the classroom and the field.

Highlights include a field trip to a forestry industry and a timer harvest operation. The York County Conservation District will be awarding one scholarship for the camp, guaranteeing the recipient, automatic selection for attendance to the camp. All other applications will be forwarded to the camp sponsors for consideration in the event that a position becomes available. Application deadline is May 4.
