1 I THE CAPITAL TIMES, Friday, Dec. 26, 1980 79 Nielsen Company surveys market WMTV news ranked top in Dane County Local newscasts' latest Nielsen ratings for Madison's three commercial TV stations are compared in the above chart. Statistics are divided into Dane County and the Designated Market Area which includes 8 Wisconsin counties. Stations are listed with their percentage share of the viewing audience. lowed by WMTV at 28 and WKOW at 27.

The latest ratings are a definite Improvement for us," said Laurie Leonard, WMTV station manager. "We made a number of changes about nine months ago to Increase viewership of our newscasts. In May we were disappointed when we didnt see a big Increase In our ratings but It takes time (or changes and Improvements to show up in the ratings. "We've increased the number of feature reports we do while retaining a hard news side. We've also done a lot more promotional campaigns." The Nielsen Company surveyed the Madison market in November when all local stations were operating under full power.

Ratings were not affected by any technical difficulties. Although Channel 3 has the advantage of the strong VII signal, it's not an overriding factor in the Madison market where two-thirds of the viewing population live in Dane County, according to Gary Dellaven, WISC-TV sales manager. The powerful VHF signal, however, does allow the station to draw in some viewers in outlying counties beyond the Madison market. "You could go to all four corners of Dane County, set up a TV set and antenna and be able to get all four Madison stations, Dellaven said. "Generally speaking, everyone in Dane County can get good reception on all four stations." Leonard agrees that the VII sig share; ARC News, 24, and "Live al Five," 22.

The Nielsen Company surveys the; Madison TV market three times a-, year: in February, May and November. Viewers are first contacted by phone to see if they would be willing to participate in the survey before! receiving a diary in the mail. November ratings in the Madison, market were based on 301 diaries kept by viewers over a four-week period. Two hundred diaries were used in Dane County with 301 total diaries' used throughout the DMA," said, Mark Friesch, WKOWs local sales', manager. "The eight counties in-! eluded in the DMA are: Lafayette, Iowa, Dane, Sauk, Richland, Juneau, Marquette and Columbia." Stations use ratings to determine ad rates and program selection, 4 Family must face reality of death Valerie Harper cannot deal with the reality of her husband's condition when she brings their son (Curtiss Marlowe) to visit him (James Broderick) in The Shadow Box, Sunday night at 8 on Channel 27.
