Last night's event was worked up by Coach Jim Mallory as a step toward reviving the old idea of giving a banquet for athletes every year. The supper was financed by alumni contributions, but basketball cnacb Doc Matbis proposed a spring cage game each year to pay for such future events'.

Mathij would stage a game between returning varsity eager! and parting seniors. Athletes winning iudividual rec ognilion during the past year wern singled out hy their re spective cuaches, and Mallory presented next fall's football co caplains three this time: Frank Tingley, Baleigh Ellis and Sal r.ero. And we drew a quick reprimand from League President Ted Mann, who pointed out that his umpires have been instructed to keep arguments from lastins too long and to keep the game moving at a rapid pace. Now it develops that President Mann has recently issued a new set ol Instructions to his "men In blue," urging them to give a m.

uiager time to grumble a Ijtlle, and not to bo too liasly in ordering managers out of the game. In fact one fine has been suspended this year because President Mann thought the umpire acted ton "fast. So perhaps this department wasn't too far rinng after all. Two rules have been pointed out to umpires, however, or strong support. They arc that a manager may not go onto the diamond to talk with his pitcher more than onee in any Dne inning without making a change; and that a manager may not complain to the plate umpire but onee In any game on ball or strike decisions.

The latter rule, though, does not keep manager from talking with the plate umpire about other nlavs. Something still needs la' done to speed up play.
