THE CAPITAL TIMES, Monday, Jan. 30, 1984 13 Duluth keeps one-point lead in WCHA race QiL Badgers From Page 11 All In all, Pietrangelo was credited with 33 saves. And perhaps it was be cause of his injury that the Gophers elected to curb their offensive appetite and order some defense in front of him. But you should be able to adjust and play against any style," added Jo-hannson. "You dont have time to worry about about what theyre doing as much as what youre doing.

And we didnt do some of the thing we should have done like execute. We played well for about 20 minutes, total At times, we're playing like an average team." Most of the time. With six games left, the Badgers are courting a below .500 record. Four of those games will be played on the road. And that might be the good news.

In the WCHA, the Badgers are 3-7 at home 5-5 away from home. The bad news is that Wisconsin will have to play at North Dakota (this weekend) and at Duluth (Feb. 17-18). Thats a Denver sandwich. The Pioneers will play at the Coliseum on Feb.

10-11. Were a lot better team than we were a month ago," Johannson said. Instead of playing for five minutes, were playing for 25. But were not going for 55 and 60 like we used to. Were not making that final step the step that you have to make to win a lot of games.

If it wasnt for Terry (Kleisinger) who made some big saves, they would have been beaten us, 8-1. He played well both nights. Its been a frustrating year. But I really dont believe theres a lot of difference in the league between the teams in talent and ability. The difference is execution.

"Thais where weve been lacking. Looking at the first weekend of the playoffs, well probably play Colorado College, and that wont be an easy series. Theyre not bad. The second round would be at North Dakota or at Duluth. Thats why its important that we establish something against both those teams.

"Like I said, were still a pretty good team. But were a step away. Right now, a giant step. Th Associated Prtu Minnesota-Duluth held on to a slim lead in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association race by coming from behind to claim a 4-4 overtime tie over second-place North Dakota in the second game of their weekend senes, after claiming the top spot with a victory a night earlier. The Bulldogs topped the Fighting Sioux, 4-1, Friday night in the first game of the weekend series to pull into a one-point lead in the WCHA standings.

Meanwhile, Denver and Colorado College split in two high-scoring contests. Denver came back for an 8-6 victory Saturday night after Colorado College edged the Pioneers, 9-8, the previous night. In Saturday night's battle for the league lead, Duluths Mark Odnoko-non scored two goals. Odnokon opened the scoring at 3:01 of the first period before North Dakota came back with three unanswered goals, by Brian Williams, Jim Archibald and Chris Jensen, by 2:48 of the second period. Duluth revived the game on goals by Odnokon, a power-play shot at 9:59 of the second period, and Norm Maclver, who scored less than two minutes later.

The Sioux went ahead on Dean Barsness's goal at 17:16, but Duluth scored just 32 seconds into the third period on Bob Lakso's shot to tie the game at 4-4. Neither team could score in the 10-minute overtime at the Duluth Arena. Goalie John Casey made 24 saves for North Dakota and Duluths Rick Koski had 20. Duluth, unbeaten in 12 of its last 13 WCHA games, is 14-4-2 in the league, while North Dakota is 14-5-1. Minnesota is in third place, four points back at 12-7-1.

In Colorado Springs Saturday night, Ian Ramsey scored a goal in each of three periods to lead the University of Denver to victory over Colorado College. The two teams are now tied for last place at 5-15 and six points behind fourth-place Wisconsin. In games next Friday and Saturday nights, Colorado College is at Duluth, Wisconsin is at North Dakota, and Minnesota is at Denver. yt. vf The Associated Press fight Sunday night at Madison Square Carden.

Quebec fell behind 5-3 at 5:45 of the third period when Hartfords Sylvain Turgeon scored his second goal of the game. But the Nordiques rallied on goals by Wilf Paiement at 7:06 and Goulet.

The Whalers had apparently regained the lead when former Wisconsin star Mark Johnson backhanded the puck into the net with 1 39 remaining in regulation time, but the maining in the third period gave the Rangers a 3-2 victory over the SL Louis Blues and lifted them into first place in the National Hockey Leagues Patrick Division, one point ahead of the idle New York Islanders. New: The New York Rangers in first place this late in the season for the first time in 12 years.

This is very important to us because we havent been too consistent, said veteran Montreal defense-man Larry Robinson, who triggered a five-goal third-period spree with his fifth goal of the season as the Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins 7-2 Sunday for their third consecutive triumph. Weve sort of been labeled a team that cant win the big ones, cant beat the big clubs. We have a long way to go, a lot of work ahead, but this was a big confidence-builder for us. It was a pretty good effort, and playing against a good club, the Boston Bruins in Boston, makes it that much sweeter. The Sportsvue Cable Network is scheduled to go on the air in April, and carry about 200 live Wisconsin sports events a year about half of which will be Bucks games or Milwaukee Brewers baseball games. We wouldnt be putting millions of dollars into, this if we didnt think it would work, he said in an interview with The Milwaukee Journal published Sunday. We paid a lot of money to have marketing surveys done to tell us whether it will work, and we believe it will Fitzgerald does not expect to make any money at the start, but said the matter would be reviewed after six months. If the trends are unfavorable at that point, he said, My only other option would be to look at the Bucks as sheer entertainment, not spend much money and accept the fact that we can't win a championship.
