PLAINS SCHOOL BOARD DEMANDING BOND FROM TOWNSHIP COLLECTOR On petition of M. J. Healey, Martin Duddy, Martin Bohinski, M. J. Corcoran, A.

J. Zawoiski, Julius Lesczynski and William Robertson. school directors of Plains Township school district, Judge Garman yesterday afternon granted an alternative write of mandamus on Thomas H. James, tax collector of the school district, to show cause why he shou'd not furnish to the secretary of the school district a list of the taxables from whom school taxes have been collected for the fiscal years 1922 to 1925, and to file a bond in the sum of $100,000 for the faithful performance of his duties as tax collector. The alternative writ granted by Judge Garman is made returnable on Wednesday, October 28, at 10 a.

POOR DIRECTORS CENSURED PINCHOT FOR PENSION VETO pilancaster, censured Oct. here last night by the State Association of Directors of the Poor, Charities and Corrections, at the closing of its annual convention, for vetoing the pension funds for their employees. He was likewise criticized for his rejection of the bill which would have prevented parents from disinheriting children under the age of sixteen in their wills.

Disapproval of the governor's action was embodied in a series of resolutions unanimously adopted by the association just before the convention adjourned. Both measures referred to had been supported by the association and in their resolutions the members direct their legislative committee to bend its efforts toward having both brought up again before the 1927 Legislature. LOCAL TAXATION WAS DISCUSSED I BY STATE COMMISSION Harrisburg, Oct. of making assessments, as they affect local taxing units and the system of tax collection were discussed at a meeting of the State tax commission, the first held on the subject of local taxation. Dr.

Leonard C. Fox, appearing for the State Chamber of Commerce. said he believed the commission "should obtain a frank appraisal of what a community is getting for Its taxes and whether or not certain functions can be eliminated." He declared that "we can't go on definitely raising taxes." Fox presented a letter from the Scranton Chamber of Commerce in which it advocated one board of assessors for all purposes. Claiming that real estate is paying more than Its share of taxes Fred Brenckman, secretary of the Pennsylvania State Grange, said 73 per cent. of all taxes are on rea! estate.

The members were informed of the business that was transacted and the many interesting lectures and social affairs that made up the program of the recent Woman's Federation convention in Wilkesbarre through a well prepared report by Mrs. Henrietta Hay, retiring president of the Civic League. Delightful entertainment was provided in piano solos by Miss Lord, of Forty Fort, vocal solos by Miss Mildred Eyerman, musical director of the Wyoming schools. Refreshments were served at the close of the meeting.

Improving Streets Street Commissioner Tonrey has 'several gangs of men at work improving streets in the borough. A gang of men with a tractor plow are grading Dennison street between Eighth street and Tenth street. A steam digger is grading Tenth street, between Susquehanna avenue and Butler street. The dirt taken from both Tenth and Dennison streets is hauled to the low spot on Dennison street, between Seventh and Eighth streets, raising this part of the street to grade. The Spring Brook Water Company as a gang of men at work laying mains on Dennison street, between' Eighth and Seventh streets.

John McCaffrey Dies John McCaffrey, aged 80 years, recently resided with his sister, Mra. John Hurley, East Fourth street, was found dead in a room in the Salvation Army hotel. Pennsylvania avenue, Wilkesbarre, last night. Mr. McCaffrey came here from Canada a short time ago to lira with his sister.

A few days aga he went to Wilkesbarre, where he secured employment. He Was native of Honesdale, but had spent of of of of of of of of of many years In Canada. Mra. Hurley is his only surviving relative. body was removed from Wilkeebarre today to the home of his by Undertaker Scureman, from where the funeral will be held at a time to be announced.

Old House Burned An old three-room one-story frame house on Tripp street formerly owned by George Blackmar, but sold by him to James Loistra, of 369 South Main street, Pittston, some months ago, was a destroyed by fire at midnight last night. The origin of the fire is not known, as the house had been uninhabited for some months. THe West Wyoming fire company responded to the alarm, but were unable to do anything toward fighting the fire, as that street has no fire plugs and none near enough to attach hose to. Fortunately the house was at some distance from neighboring buildings and no. damage to other property resulted from the fire.

Herbert Gregory, the well known druggist, who has been. seriously for some time, is again able to be around. Councilman Pierre Saunders of West Wyoming, la 111 at the home of his mother 121 East Fifth street. While using an axe chopping wood at his home on Breese street, John Parry cut the back of his hand so severely that he was removed to the Nesbitt Hospital for surgical treatment. Rev.

J. Brundle, pastor of the Methodist Church, preached at the Christian Church, Westmoor, last evening. Tonight he will preach in the Askam M. E. Church.

The meeting of the Men's. Bible Class of the M. E. Sunday school has been postponed from this evening until a later date on account of the Parent-Teacher Association banquet tonight in the Baptist Church. Mr.

Moore, of Wilkesbarre. The Presbyterian choir will meet for rehearsal this evening at 7:30 o'clock. All members are urged to attend as next Sunday evening is the monthly musicale. EXETER Malonis Buys Kauffman Property. John Malonis, who conducts cigar store and pool room in the B.

Kauffman double block, Wyoming avenue, has purchased the adjoining property, between his present location and the town hall from Mr. Kauffman. Malonis will move into his newly acquired property shortly. It is occupied at present as a barber shop and grocery by Steve Pachoni. The property Mr.

Malonis has pur. chased consists of a store with. living apartments on the socond floor, on the Wyoming end of the lot and a double dwelling at the roar of the lot. The consideration was not made public. S.

E. Arnold, who is developing the Sullivan Park plot at the lower end of the borough, states that he has already sold 100 lots, ail to people between Pittston and the lower end of Wyoming. AVOCA Miss Ruth Campbell, of whom an obituary notice appears in the county column of this issue, was a resIdent of Avoca before her family moved to Plains and is well known here. Mrs. James Deeble, of this place, is her grandmother.
