He said his fascination with the subject began in his freshman year of college, when his chemistry professor began talking about atoms.

Tyler says the subject so intrigued him, he decided to pursue chemistry as a degree. After graduating from the College of William and Mary, he went on to study chemical engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech), and from there, launched his career. Tyler offered students insight on how he used chemistry to solve problems with industrial water cooling systems, and he discussed how chemistry and business have evolved since he started his company in the 1960s. CHESTER AND MIDLOTHIAN He is the founder of ChemTreat, a now multi-million dollar water treatment company. And, while his stories about chemical engineering prompted several questions, it was Harrison Ruffin Tyler's lineage that first grabbed the attention of students in Roy Kaplan's chemistry class at John Tyler Community College. "When was your grandfather born?" Tyler asked the class during the July 19, 2007 visit.

"19..." one student started to reply as he tried to remember his grandfather's birthday. "Well mine was born in 1790!" exclaimed Tyler. That simple statement caught the attention of the class, who intently listened as Tyler explained he is the grandson of John Tyler, the 10th president of the United States and the man for which the College is named. After offering some background on his family history, Tyler turned his attention to School board meeting PETERSBURG The next regular meeting of the Petersburg School Board is scheduled for Aug. 8 at 7 p.m.
