Betty Burgardl Stroud, oge 57, of 409 Woodward Drive, long time area resident ond civic leoder, died Wednesday afternoon In University Hospital, Madison, of cancer Born In Milwaukee, April 7, 1920. Mrs. Stroud was active In numerous organizations Including, the Attic Angel Association where she served as a chairman of fhe operating committee. She was the wife of Madison attorney Donald Stroud. Mrs.

Stroud was graduated from Mllwaukee-Downer Seminary in 1938, Bradford Junior College in 1940, and Mllwaukee-Downer College in 1942, where she recieved a degree in Occupational Therapy. She served as on occupational therapist at University Hospital, Madison, from 1942 to 1945. In addition to the Attic Angel Association, Mrs. Stroud was a former board member of the Women's Committee of the Madison Civic Music Association, Chapter of P.E.O., the Women's Auxiliary of the State Historical Society, Friends of Madison Public Library, Women's Auxiliary of Madison General Hospital, Friends of fhe Elvehiem Art Museum and the Wisconsin Chapter of the Nature They found, as past studies have shown, that more women than men refuse to buckle up about 51 per cent to 41 per cent. Government figures place the level of seat belt use at 20 to 22 per cent.

The researchers found that non-use of seat belts was higher among persons who went to church infrequently or who were dissatisfied with them station in life. Persons who continued their education beyond high school used seat belts more often. The study appears in the November issue of the American Journal of PubUc Health, which also carries a short report on seat belts in taxis. A check on cabs in Pittsburgh, New York, Indianapolis awl Chicago found that only 14.5 ircent had a belt in the rear seat in working order for a passenger. Newly-wed men buckle up seat belts, but women don 9t WASHINGTON (AP) Marriage makes young men more likely to buckle their seat belts in cars, but it has an opposite effect on tlir new wives, a new study indicates. The ercentage of men who say use seat belts drops from 50 percent to 40 percent after a trip to the altar. Those figures are reversed for women, according to two Johns Hopkins University researchers.

But those statistics can be interpreted a couple of different ways. The study also found that people who had thougt or attempted suicide are likely to use seatbelts. The study was conducted among 1,000 persons in western Maryland In 1974. Over 47 pei cent said they never used -belts, 27 percent used them sometimes and 20 percent always.
