THE CAPITAL TIMES, Madison, Friday, July 13, 1984 1 7 Ex-Edgewood star gives mental push to golf game I Golf with Rob Schultz I JIM SCHUMAN was walking up the 18th hole at Odana Hills last Saturday when somebody standing near the green remarked how Schuman has changed in the past year. He sure has changed his composure, the Schuman admirer said. It doesnt matter what he shoots now, he seems to be more relaxed about everything. Last year, hed shoot a 69 and complain about how badly he played. Hes right, said Schuman, who will be a junior on the University of Florida golf team this falL Its not that I dont care anymore.

Im just taking a different attitude, and its a better attitude. Schuman felt the change was necessary. Tired of worrying about every shot, every day, the former Madison Edgewood standout may have been swinging the club correctly, but his scores were not reflecting it. It was becoming apparent to him that he was suffering from a common malady among collegiate golfers: mental burnout For instance, during his first year at Florida in 1982, Schuman won a tournament and finished among the top Southeastern Conference golfers in several others. Then, in the fall of 83, he was the low man for the Gators at an invitational tournament in Albuquerque N.M.

From then on. golf game, he should terrorize the college links again this fall After spending part of the summer in Florida, Schuman is back in Madison for a few months now and is taking heed to his coachs advice. I think Im a lot better, he said after shooting a 36-hole total of 145 at Odana to tie for the lead of the City Mens Tournament qualifications. There was never anything really wrong with how I was hitting the ball, so I could never figure out why I couldnt score, Schuman said. Then I figured out it was a big mental thing.

Since Ive changed my mental attitude, Im scoring better. And Im not hitting the ball any better. Before, the first three holes dictated how Id shoot the entire round. Its not that way any more. I think Im realizing Ill make bogeys along with some birdies.

Im trying to level out the peaks and valleys. Schuman also is making sure he wont get burned out on golf again by playing too much during the college off-season. Last summer he played in as many amateur golf tournaments as he could including the State Match Play Tournament, which he won while teamed with Jim Gaugert but this summer hes taking it much easier. He is planning on playing only in the Mens State Amateur next week at Racine Country Club, the city tournament and The Capital Times tournament if he gets invited. Schuman is making no bones about how badly he wants to win the city tournament Last year, after staying in contention throughout the first three rounds, he faltered in the final 18 holes and finished fourth behind eventual winner, Gaugert Its a tournament Ive always wanted to win and thats why it was so frustrating to finish where I did last year, Schuman sail But now, I feel as good as ever and feel I can win the thing.

Theyre some really good golfers in the tournament, like (Craig) Brischke, but I want to win it pretty badly. I figure if Pm playing well Ill have as good a chance as anybody. THE 19TH HOLE: Odana Hills assistant professional Steve Skate" Mortell finished seventh in state qualifying for Golf Digest's 50,000 National Long Drive Championship, which was held at Butler National Golf Club last week. Althougn there was a stiff wind, Martel I still drove a ball down the middle 257 yards. Unfortunately, I had to hit It 260 yards to qualify, Martell said.

Martell added that length and accuracy were the keys to the contest. They had a box out in the fairway that you had to hit into to qualify," he explained. My problem Is that I kept landing just short of the box. Schuman will have plenty of competition at the 63rd annual Wisconsin State Golf Association Amateur Championship in Racine. Beginning this Monday, the tournament will be conducted on a 72-hole stroke play format.

Ten former champions are entered Including Maple Bluffs Craig Brischke, who won the tournament in 1982, and Stevens Point's Jeff Bisbee, who is the defending champion. Besides the former champions, other top state amateurs expected to vie for the championship include WSGA player-of-the-year Allen Christ. however, things began to slide. In the spring, Schuman had to qualify for the top five spots on the Gators team again. He didnt make it.

I finished sixth or seventh. And the top five qualifiers played the whole year, there were no more qualifying rounds. There were no more changes. I was out, he said. Although Schuman was heartbroken at not making the team for the spring campaign, the change turned out to do him good.

He still played golf frequently, but it didnt overpower him and so he spent more time working toward earning a degree in criminology and social activities like going to the beach more often, he says with a laugh. I just relaxed and did things like that I finally got a chance to do things I otherwise wouldnt have been able to do. He also spent time talking to his golf coach. And Schuman basically was told that if he got his mental game to coincide with his excellent RICH RYCHThe Capital Times Jim Schuman: relaxed and confident. Sportsvue gaining, looks like a winner TVRadio Sports with Phil Rosenthal said.

To be honest, we dont even know what they want. WHAT SPORTSVUE wants is live Badger football The U.S. Supreme Courts recent decision in- validating existing exclusive network TV pacts made that a real possibility. The school has said it will honor its probation for recruiting violations and stay off live TV this season. And any future football deal would be subject to contractual committments the Big Ten places on the UW.

But dont be surprised to see the Badger football on Sportsvue in 1985. Sportsvues product has been about as good as anyone could ask, technically. At the same time the Brewers, who comprise the bulk of Sportsvues summer programming, have been rather medio- -ere. Ive been interested in Sportsvue from a sub- scribers standpoint and, gosh, there doesnt seem to be anything but an occasional Brewers game, said Santulli Ive put off subscribing because, doggone it, I cant see getting my moneys worth yet. Santulli may not be alone.

But Sportsvue doesnt mind. According to Barbera, even a fifth-place baseball team hasnt kept the channel off pace with its early projections. Theres an appetite for the product, he said. Whether they win or whether they lose is not necessarily always the important thing. MIDWAY THROUGH the baseball season, months after its debut, Sportsvue hasnt bombed.

It is more or less what the salesmen who pushed it predicted. The cynics and there still are plenty will wail Pennants arent handed out in July and Sportsvue needs 50,000 subscribers to break even. Were quite pleased, said Sportsvue president Joe ONeil. But we still have a long way to go. THE ALL-STAR BREAK is the traditional time for assessing a teams chances.

And at midseason, Sportsvue, the states new pay-cable sports channel, could turn out to be a winner. Sportsvue boasts 18,500 subscribers in Wisconsin, though that figure is probably inflated. In the Milwaukee area (excluding the city itself which is without cable), it claims about 15 percent of the potential subscribers have signed up. Statewide, that figure is about 10 percent In Madison, you need a new converter box just to have access to Sportsvue. Complete Channel TV cable company says that, of the 2,000 homes in which Sportsvue has been available, 700 have subscribed.

Of course, there are still 38,000 households in Madison that dont yet have the boxes necessary to receive Sportsvue Complete Channel is distributing them at a rate of about 10 a day. And its not clear whether people who want Sportsvue have been granted priority in getting a new box. That would tend to screw up the numbers, which at 30 percent are now comparable to those of Home Box Office and Showtime. Based on what weve seen in other parts of the state, there will probably be some leveling off, said Larry Barbera, Sportsvues vice president in charge of marketing. Madison will probably end up being around 15 percent.

Barbera said he thinks the Madison numbers are high because Complete Channel doesnt carry WVTV-TVCh. 18 the Milwaukee station which airs some Brewers games and because local WKOW-TVCh. 27 doesnt air many Brewers games. He says there is a demand here for the Brewer product EVEN BEFORE Sportsvue debuted April 3, its promoters were 'promising the world prime Mil- Today Television 3 p.m. Pro Baseball Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs, WGN.

But the UW was something else. Sportsvue talks a lot about exclusivity, said Bob Leu, the man in charge of radio and TV for the UW athletic department But I cannot give exclusive contracts. Madisons WHA-TVCh. 21 on behalf of the state educational network has an agreement in principle with Sportsvue to supply some Badger hockey, mens and womens basketball, even gymnastics. But thats subject to other committments.

In mens basketball, for instance, Wisconsin has a tentative agreement to air some games next season on WVTV and is tied to the Big Tens TV contract with syndicator Metrosports. As a result, Leus negotiations are in a holding pattern. Jim Santulli, Channel 21s executive producer in charge of sports and remotes, has been talking with Sportsvue since April of last year. Four months ago he sent a schedule of the 46 UW events WHA will carry over the next school year. He hasnt heard anything since.

More importantly, it does great hurt to a number of schools the Mid-American Conference, black schools and the Division I-AA schools.

State athletic director Charley Scott. Some schools that joined the CFA said they felt there was nothing else they could do. We have a major market for football, to be sure, but we certainly are not in a position to make that fly on a national level said Dr. Ed Bozik, athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh.

Professor Frank Remington, who represented the University of Wisconsin at a meeting of Big Jen athletic directors in Chicago this week, said the general feeling was that the CFA plan was unsatisfactory because it, too, raises serious antitrust issues." failed earlier this week. Neinas said the basic CFA television plan provides for a national marketing effort in two time period on each date offering those games to national networks and national cable as well as an open period for conference and institutional telecasts in the afternoon, which would be used for local and regional broadcasts. The CFA Television Committee will commence discussions with all interested' television entities at the earliest possible date, Neinas said. Regardless of their affiliation, schools can still negotiate deals for themselves on top of arrangement they may make with either the CFA or Big Ten-Pac-10. The Southeastern Conference has said it will start negotiations next week with WTBS, Ted Turners national cable network, on broadcast of a game-of-the-week for 1984.

The Associated Press The jumbled status of televised college football in 1984 has become somewhat clearer although there still is uncertainty regarding who will be showing what games. On Thursday, all 63 members of the College Football Association filed a commitment form that binds them to following the CFAs television package. Those members did so after disdaining efforts by a separate coalition of the Big Ten and Pac-10 Conferences, which tried to get some Southern and Eastern independents to join the group in an attempt to widen its base of support. The CFA membership consists of the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 8 Conference, the Southeastern Conference, the Southwest Conference, the Western Athletic Conference and 19 major independents. (AP) Consistent Amy Alcott firmly believes that the tougher the golf course, the tougher she plays. That could spell bad news for coleader Jo Ann Washam and 148 other rivals entering todays second round of the U.S. Womens Open championship at the Salem Country Clubs exacting course.

The par-72 layout, designed by the late Donald Ross, took its toll Thursday as the 72-hole event returned here after a 30-year absence. Starting just 16 minutes apart in mid-morning, Alcott and Washam fired one-under-par 71s, the only players among 120 professionals and 30 amateurs to break the standard. This is not an easy golf course, its not set up for phenomenal scores, Alcott said. However, I had a very consistent round and consistency means success in professional golf. Washam, two strokes over par with a 38 on the front nine, charged back with a 3-under 33 for a share of the lead.

I was not disappointed to be two-over at the turn, Washam said. I just tried to be patient Alcott, winner of 19 tournaments in 10 years on the LPGA Tour, and Washam, winless since 1979, took a one-stroke lead in the 72-hole test with $225,000 in prize money, including $36,000 for the winner. Defending champion Jan Stephenson, bidding to become the fifth player to win consecutive Opens, Japans Ayako Okamoto and amateur Joan Ellis were all at 72. Ellis, 22, a 1983 Furman University graduate, registered a hole-in-one, the ninth since the U.S. Golf Association became sponso of the Open in 1953.

Using a driver, she sank her tee shot on the 203-yard, 15th hole. Some days you make bogeys and some days you make holes-in-one, she quipped. But this is my first hole-in-one since I began playing golf 10 years ago. Deadlocked at 73 were Patty Sheehan, two-time LPGA winner and the leading money winner on the tour this year; veteran Kathy Whitworth, winner of 84 LPGA events but seeking her first Open title in her 25th year as a pro; Alice Miller, who earned her first victory last year, her fifth on the tour; veteran Rosie Jones and rookies Amy Benz and Heather Drew. Local favorites Pat Bradley, the 1981 Open champion, and Jane Blalock were locked in a group at 76, while Nancy Lopez was at 77.

Stephenson, winless on the tour this year, said she didnt hit the ball as close to the hole as she usually does, but Im happy with my start. She began the tournament with a bogey-5 on the first hole, and lagged two or three putts after that However, she was satisfied with a round finished with a birdie on the 11th green and pars the rest of the way. The field was to be cut to the low 60 scorers and ties after todays round for the final 36 holes Saturday and Sunday. I think even par might be good enough for 72 holes, Alcott said. Right now, though, its like a horse race or a novel unfolding on the first chapter.
