Miss Mary Barrett, librarian of the D. Leonard Corgan Library of King's and direcwr of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Bibliographic Center, stated that the1 loss of books, journals, equipment and documents in the Corgan Library could run to one million dollars. The court level of the library was a complete loss. In addition to furnishings and equipment, this level housed the back runs of 1,500 journals and the U.S.

Government Depository covering a 24 year span of documents. All books in the social sciences, fiction and the audio visual complex and all films on the "Civilisation" series were included in the loss. On the first floor, the loss included innumerable major reference works bibliography, history, mien films and all furnishings and equipment. Members of. the professional and non professional staff moved everything salvaeable to the bleachers of the gymnasium.

This prodigious job was accom plished in semi darkness. They were aided by student assistants, student volunteers, mem bers of the faculty, and a bus load of Catholic Youth Organization volunteers from Phila delphia and Norristown. On the brighter side. Miss Barrett reported that all catalogs and records were saved. The Union Catalog of Northwestern Pennsylvania is intact.

This catalog includes all the books in the other major libraries in the devastated area: Wilkes College, Osterhout Free Library in Wilkes Barre; the Hoyt Li brary, Kingston and the Luzerne County Community College, Wilkes Barre. The Union List of Serials lists all journals held by these libraries. It is hoped that when the Cor gan Library can resume the operation of its TWX and Tele type equipment people in the area can be provided with li brary service through inter li brary loan: According to Miss Barrett the loss of the libraries is one of the greatest blows sustained in the flood by Wyoming Valley. In addition to King's, Wilkes, Osterhout, and Hoyt are the Lu zerne (Jounty Lommunuy college Library, the Medical So city Library, West Pittston, Ply mouth, and Wyoming libraries and the historical society.
