Firefighters filled sandbags and placed them along the side of the street to prevent more water from saturating the ground.

Roseland was not the only area faced with flooding. Crews worked to halt mudslides on Cleveland Road. John Piraccini, general manager of the Indiana Toll Road, said the heavy rains caused soil to run from the embankments onto parts of Cleveland Road. Nothing seemed to hold back the water that drenched the area overnight with the record-setting rainfall. A series of intense storms exploded one right after another in a supercharged atmosphere that was hot and thick with humidity all day Wednesday.

REDDING Tribune Staff Writer When ABC affiliate WSJV-TV switches to Fox, another station plans to debut as a local ABC affiliate. Howard Shapiro, chairman of Weigel Broadcasting, says low-power station WBND-TV will operate as a full-fledged ABC affiliate. Shapiro says he has been involved in talks with the ABC network for the past month or so.

We have a definite deal with ABC, he says. Janice Greteymyer, in ABCs media relations department, confirmed this morning that network programming will be available locally on Channels 69 and 58 after WSJV-TV joins Fox on Oct. 18. Yes, indeed, we are going to be working with Weigel Broadcasting to continue our service, Greteymyer said. Viewers in the South Bend area voiced concern about losing (the networks) news, sports and entertainment programming.

We are very happy to be able to continue to serve them. In a phone interview from his office in Chicago, Shapiro said that Weigel Broadcasting is in the process of upgrading facilities in South Bend. He would not disclose the exact location. WBND-TV will carry all of ABCs network programming. Shapiro says that eventually there may be a local newscast.

Of 20 young women who decided they might want to be nuns more than 25 years ago, Sister Mary Kathleen Kuenstler is the only one who remains a Poor Handmaid of Jesus Christ.

Sister Kate, as she is called, celebrates her 25th anniversary in the sisterhood Saturday. I dont really remember a time when I decided I wanted to be a nun, Sister Kate said. I just always wanted to. Sister Kates mother has a picture of her daughter at the age of 4 or 5 with a dishcloth veil on her head, playing nun. The Poor Handmaids continued to influence Sister Kate as her teachers Plan eyed By JENNIFER DIXON Associated Press Writer WASHINGTON Congress is weighing legislation that would let working Americans invest some of their Social Security taxes in private retirement accounts in a bid to strengthen confidence in the system and improve the incomes of 21st-century retirees.

Experts say there are both ristys and benefits to allowing people to divert even a small share of Social Securitys payroll taxes into private retirement funds. Workers who invest wisely, they told Sen. Alan Simpson at a hearing Wednes through grade school at Holy Cross parish in Wendolyn, 111. Back in the 60s, there was an aspira-cy school near the Poor Handmaids United States motherhouse in Donaldson. It was a boarding school for high school-age girls interested in religious life.

The school closed shortly after Sister Kate graduated. After graduating from the aspiracy school, 20 young women decided to live with the Poor Handmaids to see what religious life would be like. They attended Ancilla College. The college, which began as a school for prospective priests and nuns, opened its doors to the general community while Sister Kate was in attendance. I felt at home here, Sister Kate said recently from the Poor Handmaids to let public day, could reap far greater returns than those who depend solely on Social Security- But, skeptics said, not everyone will invest wisely.

And the families of those who die early or are disabled may not have saved enough to keep their families out of poverty and off welfare. The private investment idea is being pushed by Simpson, and Bob Kerrey, as part of their series of proposed reforms for the national retirement system. Under their legislation, workers would be allowed to divert about one-sixth of the compound, which includes Ancilla. It seemed like a good fit. I couldnt see myself anywhere else.

And although 11 other women agreed with Sister Kate in 1970, only two took final vows in 1976. Shortly thereafter, Sister Kates final classmate changed her mind. I remember when the last one left, Sister Kate said. It really made me think, Why am I continuing to stay? But I felt happy. I felt a strong awareness of God calling me to do this.

Sister Kates class of potential sisters was one of the last. After that, religious life began to shift. The shift had a lot to do with Vatican II but little to do with the feminist revolution, according to Sis- See NUNSPage A2 invest Social Security Social Security taxes they and their employers now pay into a personal investment plan, similar to an Individual Retirement Account. But by 2013, it will begin spending more than it collects in taxes and will be broke by 2030 unless it is restructured, according to the governments projections. Backers say Simpsons plan begins to I I I.
