is I AN- THE CAPITAL TIMES, Thursday, July 13, 1972 What's the SCORE? ERIC HILLSTROM In the years between 1954 and 1968, Milwaukee area teams pretty much dominated the NBC Wisconsin State Baseball Tournament. Only Little Chute and the Monona Grove Lakers outside the beer city were able to sneak in for titles during those years. But now, since the meet has found a home in Madison, the balance of power has shifted, Capital city teams have captured the prize the last three years. "Milwaukee's caliber of baseball just hasn't been up the past few years," notes Gene Barrett, manager of Madison Anchor Savings and Loan, the 1969 winner which will open the 1972 meet Friday night at Breese Stevens Field against Brookfield. "Some of the guys on their better teams are still pretty good ballplayers, but they're not as young as they used to be." Dave Kelliher Gene Barrett Madison Leske's has won the meet the last two years and again considered one of the top threats for another crown.

But pilot Dave Kelliher is one who is fearful of the Milwaukee teams. "They haven't won it for three years now and 1 understand they're really ready for the tournament this time," he says. "This Marosco team is good." But when pinned for a tourney favorite, Kelliher doesn't even pause, "Beloit they've been beating everyone in the state pretty regularly this season." One loss, however, was to Kelliher's crew last week, 7-3. Barrett also likes Beloit, but ranks them along with a group of teams like Leske's, Lannon, West Allis Highway Beers and possibly Antigo and Bangor as the teams to beat. Anchor has had a disappointing 10-11 season SO far, but Barrett says tournament time changes a team.

"We just haven't been able to get the same guys on the field every game. Maybe things will be different now. On paper a team can 1 look tremendous, but it just takes one bad game in a tournament to take you out. If you're lucky, anything can happen." Barrett will start either John Westmas or Don Held, both lefties, against Brookfield. His top arm, Vern Geishert, has to work.

Kelliher, whose team owns a 13-3 record this season, will go wih smooth southpaw Mike McEvilly, the tournament's MVP winner the last two years, when they open Monday night against Milwaukee Welding. McEvilly pitched three wins last year and five in 1970. The third Madison team in the field is Al Falk's young United Bank club. Injuries have held his outfit back, but the skipper is looking for better things. 'Any success we'll have in the tournament or the rest of the season depends on Tom Fahey and Ron Edquist," he says.

"Tom has a broken finger and we need his hitting. Ron has to come up with some good pitching." Edquist, a righthander from Minneapolis, just got out of the service and is now working in Madison. He has pitched for Pan American College in the Collegiate World Series. He or Joe Van Gemert will get the call when United takes on Lebanon Tuesday night. But if any Madison teams wins the crown, it appears as though Leske's has the best shot at it again.

"They've strengthened themselves this year and are playing good baseball," acknowledges Barrett. "I'll have to admit we're a better than a year ago when we went to Wichita," says Kelliher. "But it's been a long time since anyone ever won state three times in a row. We're going in with hopes of repeating, of course, but it's really going to be tough this NOTES--One of the top coming up in the first round Beers clash Tuesday night. The tough to beat.

"I don't know myself where it's going." said Chicago White Sox left-hander after winning his 13th game Wednesday night, a 5-4 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Wood had his favorite pitch dancing in the dark in the first inning, successfully eluding Cleveland hitters. But then the Indians discovered its whereabouts in the second, scoring three runs. Wood literally held on by his fingertips, giving up just one run the rest of the way while his mates tallied once in the fourth and once more in the ninth on Carlos May's tiebreaking single to pull it out. In the other American League games, the Detroit Tigers downed the Texas Rangers 3-1; the Kansas City Royals defeated the Baltimore Orioles 11- in 10 innings; the Boston Red Sox trimmed the Oakland A's 7-6; the New York Yankees clouted the California Angels 5-0 and the Minnesota Twins ripped the Milwaukee Brewers 7-1. Wednesday night's performance wasn't one of Wood's better ones.

The White Sox southpaw lost a 3-0 lead and then 4-3 lead when the Indians came back to tie the game in the second and fifth innings. Rookie Tony Muser led off the Chicago ninth with a single and took second on a sacrifice bunt off Ray Lamb. Tommy Hilgendorf replaced Lamb on the mound and was greeted by May's single to center that made a winner out of Wood. The White Sox ace finished with a nine-hitter. Rookie Bill Slayback scattered eight hits while his Detroit mates took advantage of Texas errors for a pair of unearned runs enroute to victory over the Rangers.

It was Slayback's fifth start since moving up from the minor leagues on June 26. He boosted his record to 2-3 and helped the Tigers jump their East- leading margin to two games over Bal(timore. Cookie Rojas' grand slam homer highlighted a seven-run rally in the 10th inning that helped Kansas City hand Baltimore its sixth loss in the last seven games. The Royals first broke a 44 tie when Baltimore reliever Eddie Watt forced in a run hitting Lou Piniella with the bases loaded. John Mayberry knocked in the second run of the rally with a sacrifice fly, After a walk loaded the bases again, Rojas delivered his home run.

Bobby Knoop capped the rally with a run-scoring hit. Carlton Fisk drove in two runs, one with a seventh-inning homer that provided the margin of victory, to give Boston its 10th victory in 12 games. Fisk's 12th homer in the seventh gave the Red Sox the run they needed to withstand Dave Duncan's two-run homer in the Oakland ninth. Mel Stottlemyre continued his mastery over California, shutting out the Angels for the third straight time this year with a seven-hitter. The victory lifted Stottlemyre's career advantage over California, shutting out the Angels for the third straight time this year with a seven-hit-queen, ter.

The victory lifted Stottlemyre's career advantage over California to a lopsided 17-3 mark. The Yankee righthander helped himself at bat, driving in Chess Play (Continued from Page 1, Sports. Jorignal Indian form of the ame.) The two sides soon begin exchanging pieces, and by the 28th move most of the wood was gone, and a draw appeared to be the logical 1 outcome, Neither player had any legitimate reason to hope for an advantage. It is here that Fischer made his mistake, Unwilling to accept a split decision, the impetuous American went for an unprotected pawn on his 29th move. Three moves later his bishop was trapped, and three moves after that he was forced to give it up for only one more pawn.

What was Fischer thinking? How could he fail to see that he would be losing after only six moves? Perhaps he thought he could get away with 32 P-R6. This move keeps the king out of KN2 (where it would catch the bishop), and prepares B-N8 and P.R7 with winining game, I wonder long it took him to see his error: 32 P-R6, 33, K-N4, 34. KxP, BxP 35. B-Q2 followed by 36. K-N2 winning the bishop another way.

When he had admitted his miscalculation by playing 32 K-K2 instead, It was Fischer's ego that must have been squirming. So now the game was adjourned after forty moves. Our analysis found (after a compulsory 41. PxP, KxP) Spassky's bishop holding the two kingside pawns, while his king forces the loss of Fischer's crucial QNPawn. We could not find any defense for Fischer.

Neither could Bobby; he bowed to the inevitable after Spassky's 56th move. As for the game itself, it reveals a tremendous loss of form for the American, and falls far below the standard of play one expects in a world championship match. It could be a sign that Fischer's nerves have failed him, and that he has begun to hallucinate at the chess board. (This is not infrequent in the high-tension world of tournament chess.) Or it could have been due to a chance oversight, something even the strongest players are prey to. My guess: it's a false start.

Fischer will pick up as the match goes on. One thing is clear: the next several games present a test of Fischer's competence in this match. He will have to prove that he can avoid a repetition of this disastrous first-round encounter. Fischer (Continued from Page 1. Sports) of the American's camp, said "he is a pro and this is part of the game.

I believe he has enough to come back in the match. After all, there are 23 possible games left." Fischer locked simself into his hotel suite with his second, Father William Lombardy, a Catholic priest who is a grandmaster, to analyze the lost game and prepare for today's encounter. The challenger lost the first game at the 29th move when in taking one of Spassky's pawns he allowed his bishop to be trapped. By doing this he in effect exchanged one bishop for two pawns an action which favored the champion. Although Fischer made a desperate attempt to turn the game into a draw, it became obvious that Spassky could not be kept from promoting a pawn to a thus making an eventual checkmate a certainty.
