Smith, Tiant of Red Sox Clash BOSTON UP Slugger Reggie Smith and starting pitcher Luis Tiant engaged in a shouting match and had to be restrained from physically going at each other Monday night before helping the Boston Red Sox to an 8-2 victory over the Minnesota, Twins. Observers said Smith and Tiant were restrained by team-' mates in the runway between the clubhouse and the dugout and then again in the dressing quarters. "It was just one of those things," Tiant said.

"I don't like to be threatened, and won't be-that's all I have to say," Smith said. Smith walked, doubled and singled nad scored two runs. Tiant hurled an eight-hitter in his first complete game in a year. He also singled across two runs. Twins May Lose Kaat for Season MINNEAPOLIS ST.

PAUL, (P) The Minnesota learned Monday that pitcher in Jim Kaat sprained his left wrist Sunday's game at Chicago and could be lost for the remainder of the season if the wrist is fractured. A team spokesman said the southpaw injured the wrist while sliding into second base during the first game of Sunday's doubleheader. Kaat continued pitching until the eighth inning, then needed relief help to run his record to 10-2 Additional X-rays will be needed to determine if there is a fracture, the spokesman said. Results of the x-rays won't be known for a week. The 33-year-old veteran returned to Minneapolis Sunday while the team left for Boston, where Minnesota opens a threegame series tonight.

"Well, maybe that's so. But maybe it's because I'm constantly reminded of it. Maybe it's because it's such a prodigious record. It's been sitting there for SO long, maybe it should be broken. I'm healthy and it won't be an easy task, but I think I can do it." Philadelphia enjoyed a strange victory over San Francisco, bunching all five of its hits for four runs before a batter was retired.
