Blytheville, Arkansas • PO 3-1017 BY STUDENT RABBI MICHAEL B. EISENSTAT For nearly 70 years Jewish families have lived in north* east Arkansas. Jewish families began settling in Osceola, Blytheville and Manila around the year 1900. In th« first two decades 1 of the twentieth century many Jewish families made their homes in northeast Arkansas and aoutheait Misiouri. The first record! of the Temple Ladies Aid Society discloses th»t it was organized on May 7,1923, with 18 Jew- iih ladi«i a» charter memberi. It was through the efforts of the Ladiei Aid Society that Congregation T«mpl« Israel was founded and organized. A Jewish Community House was dedicated on South llth Street in Blytheville on Purim, March 15, 1925. In this building Jewish men and women attended religious services »nd conducted Sunday School for many years. The small but active group worked for 15 yean, with the goal of erecting a Jewish Temple under the leadership of a permanent Rabbi. The Community House was told in 1942 and land pur- chased at the corner of Chickasawbe and 15th Street for the erection of a Temple. The outbreak of World War II delayed the start of construction of the new building. In 1946 ground was broken and the cornerstone was laid on August 14, 1946, with services conducted by the newly elected Rabbi Alfred Vise. The new building was formally dedicated Sept, 7,1941, with rabbis from Pine Bluff Helena and Hot Springs, as well as Rabbi Vise participating. The beloved Rabbi, Dr. Alfred Vise continued to serve the congregation until his untimely death in 1957. Since that time the cnogregation lias been ministered te by student Rabbis from the Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio. At the present time approximately 35 families are mem. • bers of Temple Israel. These familis live in Blytheville, Os. ceoa, Manila and Corning, Arkansas, Hayti, Garuthersville, Kennett, Maiden and Bernie, Missouri. Services are conducted weekly on Friday evenings. Sun. day School is held weekly in the Educational Building, which was originally built as a parsonage for the latsj Rabbi Vise.
