Schuler hurls Angels to 3 1 st victory By TOM WATSON Staff Sports Writer The two newest members of the Salinas Angels baseball team share the spotlight in a 7-2 victory over Visalia at Municipal Stadium last night. Pitcher Dave Schuler and first baseman Lawrence Rush starred as the Angels collected their 31st California league victory in 40 The Angels will move on to Reno for a series-opening game Saturday with the Silver Sox at 1:30 p.m. That game can be heard on KIDD, 630 AM, by taped delay beginning at 7:20 p.m. The lefthanded Schuler, in his most impressive performance since joining the Angels on May 11, picked up his second win without a loss by hurling six innings of shutout ball. Schuler came to Angel organization along with major league reliever Dave La Roche from the Cleveland Indians.

Schuler spent last year in San Jose, and began this season with Waterloo in the Midwest League. Schuler gave up five hits while not allowing a runner past second base. He needed just 57 pitches in his six innings of work. Hes 'Schuler) a control pitcher and doesn't overpower batters," said Angel manager Larry Stubing. Like all lefthanders he cant throw a ball straight, it sinks naturally." Schuler sent down seven of the Oaks on first pitches last night.

He never threw more than two balls to any batter and struck out three in an amazing display of accuracy. "When I pitch, I just concentrate to throw pitches," the 6-5 Schuler commented after the game. I feel I can pinpoint all my pitches. And then I just try to battle and keep the ball down." Schuler was relieved by Jerry Quigley and Jerry Brust, as Stubing gave three of his relievers work last night. Both Quigley and Brust gave up a run to the Oaks.

A major portion of last night's 13-hit Salinas attack was provided by Rush, who has been with the Angels since May 16. Rush came to Salinas from the Angels Double A team in El Paso. Moore will be in a Gulls uniform tonight when Salt Lake City visits San Jose in a Pacific Coast League contest. The Angels lost Ralph Botting Tuesday.

He was sent up to the Double A El Paso Diablos. Botting was 8-0 this season for Salinas. Moore, a former major league pitcher with the Montreal Expos, appeared in 13 games with Salinas, posting a 2-0 record. He pitched 17 innings, recording a 1.69 earned run average (third best on the staff) and 18 strikeouts Moore had been scheduled to join Salt Lake City last week, but plans were changed at the last minute by the Angel organization and he remained in Salinas until today. The triumph gives the Angels a 10' a game lead. The Angels win was also their third straight over Visalia, as the two teams concluded a four-game set. "We have not played well in these two games, he said. "Our game is bail movement and we haven't been doing it. Instead of us getting the fast break, we re giving it to them and you can't do that." The fight that marred the game, which came with the Sixers holding a safe 20-point lead with 4:52 to play, was touched off after the 6 foot-11, 257-pound Dawkins and the Blazers Bob Gross went crashing to the floor on a rebound. Dawkins and Gross came up glaring eye-to-eye, but when Dawkins fired a left that missed, the 6-foot-8, 220-pound Lucas raced downcourt and caught the 20-year-old Sixer center with a hard right.

Dawkins and Lucas danced in a fighters' pose in the middle of the court before being pulled apart and ejected. The people trying to break up the fight most notably Collins, Ramsay and Portland Assistant Coach Jack McKinney made out worse than the combatants. Besides Collins eye injury. Ramsay caught a few stray punches and McKinney was jumped from behind by fans. Thirty-four teams from all areas in the state have members entered in the three-day meet, which ends Monday. Other area participating teams will be the Monterey Marlins, the Monterey Bay Swim Club, the Carmel baracudas and the Hollister Swim Club. 'during an ugly, bench-clearing free-for-all that resulted in the ejection of teammate Darryl Dawkins and Portland's Maurice Lucas in the fourth quarter. "It got real rough out there," said Collins, applying ice bags to his eye and ankle. Geez, I'm only a skinny guy.

I'll be all right for Sunday, though." Collins hit two baskets to spark the Sixers second-quarter burst that ended in a 61-43 lead as Bibby added eight points and Erving six. Of the 13 baskets Philadelphia made in the period, nine ere layups or dunks. At the same time, the Blazers shot themselves out of the game with miserable 22 per cent shooting. Winning Coach Gene Shue called the Sixers second-quarter performance as well as a team can play under stress." We made them make mistakes, said Erving, who had 20 points. "Our defense was superb.

It's a challenge to stop us defensively and that is instrumental to stopping our fast break, which they did not do." For the Blazers, who shot 36 per cent for the game and were led by Bill Walton's 17 points, it was their second sloppy performance of the playoffs and Coach Jack Ramsay will have to Sports Scene, A change in uniforms and organizations has made a world of difference for new Salinas Angel pitcher Dave Schuler. Schuler, a strapping 6-5 lefthander with pinpoint control, came to Salinas earlier this month from the Cleveland Indians Waterloo club in the Class A Midwestern League. The change was a dramatic one for Schuler, who says he felt he was going nowhere fast in the Indians organization. "Its been like a rebirth coming here," Schuler said last night, after pitching, six shutout innings against Visalia and picking up his second win since joining Salmas. "I feel like Im starting fresh.

"When I found out 1 had been traded (along with major league reliever Dave LaRoche), I called up Angel general manager Harry Dalton and from the first sentence, I knew the lines of communication would be open. He told me they were going to do whatever they could to get me A FRIDAY, MAY 27, 1977 second period Thursday nigh and the 76ers rolled to a 107-89 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers to take a 2-0 lead in the NBAchampionshipseries. Collins shot 10-for-16 while scoring a game-high 27 points, but it wasn't easy, lie twisted an ankle driving in for a layup in the first quarter and the sellout Spectrum crowd of 18,276 held its breath in unison. Later, he sustained a four-stitch cut over the right eye desire his third year in Triple A as he did in the first. "I never saw a player who wanted to play as much as Terry did then and does now.

He enjoys baseball probably more than a lot of others. It's a fun thing for him, and he is a young man with talent." The Giants had a chance to get Whitfield from the Yankees during spring training, so Altobelli and general manager Spec Richardson talked about the possibility. "I felt Terry was on the verge of being a big league player," said Altobelli, "and I thought he deserved a chance to see if he could play up here. He was one of 14 outfielders in the Yankee camp and I don't think they had any plans for him. So Spec went and got him." Whitfield recalls he was sitting in his room the day before the Giants obtained him for infielder Marty Perez studying a copy of the Sporting News with a couple of friends.

"There were no options left on me, so 1 knew the Yankees were going to send me somewhere," said Whitfield. "We were looking over the rosters of all the teams in the big league and we saw where the Giants had only five outfielders. "I thought to myself, thats where 1 would be going. The next day (YankeeGM) Gabe Paul told me I had been traded to the Giants and I couldnt believe it for a minute. But I packed my bags in a hurry and I didn't waste any time getting to Phoenix." Altobelli could not make up his mind during the spring who should play in the outfield, so he gave Whitfield, Jack Clark, Larry Herndon, Gary Thomasson and Darrell Evans equal time, hoping to find fhree who could play every day.

The rookie skipper had no luck and it was not until last week that he finally settled on Whitfield as his right fielder. Alisal is champion of the Monterey Bay League, wftBe Gonzales will be competing in its first postseason playoff, after capturing the Mission Trail Athletic League pennant. Soquel was declared champion of the Santa Cruz County Athletic League after ending up in a three-way tie for first with Harbor and Marello at the end of the regular season. Soquel had beaten both Harbor and Marello twice in the regular season for the nod to advance to the playoffs.

Police Inspector Arthur Matthews said police were directed to the home by neighbors who reported hearing gunshots, apparently at least two. by Tom Watson who comes in in certain situations and throws as hard as he can. 1 feel Im more of a control pitcher and can pitch to spots. Schuler evidently owes part of his acquisition by the Angel organization to former Salinas manager Del Crandall, who saw Schuler work last season. Crandall is now a base coach with the parent Angels.

"I guess Del had a lot to do with me coming to the Angels. He saw me last year, and it seemed like my best games were against Salinas. He was impressed with the wav I pitched I guess, especially with all the problems the (San Jose) team had last year." Schuler is 2-0 in Salinas, and has yet to give up a run in 13 innings of work. In 54 appearances with San Jose last year, Schuler was 4-7 with an earned-run-average 4.76.

"1 started four games in San Jose last year, but I really didn't have the defense there," Schuler notes. He is now backed up by the best defense in the Cal League, which is important since he is not a hard-throwing, strikeout pitcher. "1 was a high-velocity pitcher, but 1 hurt my arm in my junior year in college. But I noticed my velocity coming back late tonight (he struck out two batters in nis final inning), which I think will come with more work. "I really don't feel like I'm a relief pitcher," Schuler says.

To me a relief pitcher is someone whole new SAN FRANCISCO All spring long Joe Altobelli was rooting for Terry Whitfield because in the young outfielder the San Francisco Giants picked up from the New York Yankees he saw a player he felt one day might be a big league star. Albtobelli was managing at Rochester in the International League and Whitfield played for the Yankees farm club at Syracuse, and for three years. "What impressed me most about Whitfield," Altobelli was recalling Thursday night after Terrys fourth hit of the game had given the Giants a 6-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, "was that he played with the same Weekench Preview Alisol high and Gonzales high meet today at 5 p.m., kicking off the Central Coast Section Region IV baseball playoffs at Salinas Municipal Ball Park Sportswaves RADIO TONIGHT SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS hol Atlanta. 7 15pm (KIDD630 AM) OAKLAND A ot Cleveland. 4 IS (KNBR680 AM) SAN JOSE MISSIONS host Salt Lake City Guilt 9pm (KXRX 1500 AM) GOLDEN CATERS Phoenix.

"Theres just too much politics in the Indian organization, too much jealousy. What 1 had been hoping was that LaRoche would get traded and Id get a chance to move up, but then 1 got included in the deal. Everybody on the (Waterloo) team was jealous when I got traded." This is Schuler's second year in the California League.

He spent last year with the Indians San Jose farm club. San Jose finished last in both halves of Cal League play last season. The change from a two-time loser (Waterloo was under .500 when Schuler left) to the win-ningest team in professional baseball has been a happy transition for the reliever-starter. The biggest change in coming here is that this team is together. Off the field theyre individuals..
