The moon is between its last quarter and new phase. The morning stars are Jupiter and Saturn. The evening stars are Venus, Mars and Mercury.

Those born on this day are under the sign of Gemini. American songwriter Cole Porter was born June 9, 1893. On this day in history: In B99, James Jeffries won the heavyweight boxing title by knocking out Bob Fitz Simmons in New York City. In 1943, Congress passed an act providing for "pay as you go" income tax deductions. It authorized employers to withhold payments from, sai ary checks, In .1959, the first missile submarine, 'the nuclear powered "George Washington" was launched at Groton, Conn.

In 1969. the U.S. Senate affirmed nomination oF Warren Burger as chief justice of the United States. A thought for the day: Norwegian playwright Henrik. Ibsen said, "A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm." Heart Attack AndExercise WASHINGTON One of the most intriguing parts of Sen.

George McGovein's tax reform plan is 'that he' would give every man. woman and child in the United States $1,000 a year in cash. The money would be taxable, and the majority of Americans would have to return it. But those in a low enough tax bracket or no tax bracket could keep the money as guaranteed income. It blows one's mind to think what would happen if everyone in this country received a check for Jl .000.

It is "check" day and Mr. and Mrs. Amberson and their three children Robert, 17, Sarah; 14 and Todd. 9 have just received their $1,000 allotments from the government with a short note: Dear American: Enclosed please find a S1000 check as part of my tax program. If you don't need it, please send it back to the treasury, as we can use any surplus money you can spare.

Slncereiy, President George McGovern "Oh boy," Robert says, "now I can buy a new motorcycle." "Wait a minute Mr. Amberson says. "I want all those checks. I have to pay taxes on them, and since were in the a year bracket, it all must be returned to the government." "I'm not giving back my check," Sarah says. "It's made out to me.

"What. are you going to do with $1,000. Sarah? "I'm going to buy record tapes with it. There are 200 Rolling Stone albums I want so badly I could die," Little Todd shouts, "Hot dog, SLOW! Mom, how much bubble gum can you get for "Too much" Mrs. Amberson replies.

"You're not going to spend your 51,000 on bubble gum." By DR. JOYCE Dear Dr. Brothers: I've fallen in love with a man 25 years older than I and I want to marry him. My mother is dead set against it and some of my friends are making fun of me. They tell me 1 that if I marry this man, no sex life at all in a few years, he'll be an impotent old mail while I'm still young.1 Sex is important to me, but even if I knew this to be true, I still couldn't give him up.

Is this neurotic of me? C.C. Dear "C.C. You should not worry' about whether or not your feelings are neurotic, and you certainly shouldn't let the comments of your friends stop you from marrying someone you love. You might question the quality of those friends who make fun of you, although aware of your feelings. Many marriages where there is a great difference in the ages of the partners work out very well.

However, there are certain risks in such unions, especially when the woman is the vounger one. There is some truth in what your friends say about the sexual quality of such a marriage. Your friend may be sexually vigorous now. but" his potency may not have the longevity' he intends. Normally, high sexual' ability at 40 or 50 continues relatively late in life and some men are potent into their 80s so it need not be ah important issue, but it is wise to be aware that some men lose interest in sex.

in their 60s. Another real possibility which should be faced' is that with an age discrepancy of 29 or 25 years, you may find that a good portion of your life will be lived with someone who is in his declining years. Illness is always a possibility in marriage but the chances of your being or feeling like a nurse increase when your husband is 25 years older than you. You should also consider By H. L.

I had a heart. attack several years ago. I can do all sorts of exercises such as walking, bicycling and jg on but when I carry heavy packages or take put a train can I get a tight feeling it) rnychest; with Mine pain. Why docs this happen? A To explain this. IeUme you the difference between' tyo kinds of exercise.

One' is regular exercise such as walking, running, swimming, hammering and so on. It is called several names dynamic, rhythmic or isotonic. The muscles being used change in length as happens when any joint in the body moves. When you. bend your the muscles in the arms become shorter.

When you straighten your elbow these muscles become longer. There is another kind of exercise. Press the palms of your, hands together, pushing one against the other as hard as you can. Although you are using great muscular effort the muscles are not'ehahging. their shapes.

They are not getting shorter or longer. And no joint is moving. This is as isometric exercise which became quite popular several years ago. Just standing still is isometric exercise because although no muscles are changing shape and no joints are moving the muscles are working to keep the body in the Upright position. Holding a heavy suitcase in your har.ds while you are standing still is iso metric exercise.

However, when you walk with the suitcase then you are combining both kinds of exercise. You would think that isotonic exercise puts very little strain on the heart, The reverse is true. Within seconds, the heart begins to beat faster aid the blood pressure rises. This can be dangerous if you have a damaged heart muscle from a previous attack especially if your blood pressure is already elevated. Many times a day everyone does some isotonic exercise but it is only for brief period and usually of no importance.

Carrying a heavy package may cause no symptoms, but it would be inadvisable to do so over and over again by a person who has a heart condition. He should not be doing that kind of work nor should he have a job which requires standing with arms raised doing overhead work. some persons carrying just one heavy object, such as a trash can, may be top much exertion for the heart "Sean Reilly's mom lets ton spend $1,000 on anything he wants to. Last year he bought bis own Coke machine." "No one." Mr. Amberson shouts, "is spending any of his money on motorcycles, tapes or bubble gum!" "Would you believe a new washer and dryer.

This is not our money. It belongs to the government," Mr. Amberson cries. "Why can't you get that through your heads?" "Why would the government send it to us if it didn 't want us to have it?" Robert demands. "Because President McGovern believes it's easier to give $1,000 to everyone and then have them give it back.

In this way you don't 'have a welfare mess." "If I can't buy tapes with my $1,000," Sarah says, "I'm going to buy an airplane ticket to Japan, and you'll never hear from me again." Little Todd says, "I think I'll buy a color television set for my room with half of it; and with the other half I'll buy Sean Reilly's baseball "The children can do what they want with their cheeks," Mrs. Amberson says, "but I'm not giving this one back. I earned this $1,000." "How did you earn it?" Mr. Amberson asks. "By working 18 hours a day, 365 days year." "Please," Mr.

Amberson begs, "endorse the checks and give them to me. I'll put them in the bank and on April 15 we'll send back to Jie government. Otherwise, I'll wind up going to jail," There is dead silence in the dining room. Suddenly Sean Reillv comes in waving his check. "Hey Todd, I'll buy your roller skates for $1,000." "Sold," Todd says.

"Hurry up," Sean yells, "before my dad finds out where I Yesterday From the Files oi The Times June 9 1942 One of the most mysterious fires recorded in San Mateo annals summoned the fire de panmem iuc.iywuuu. out from her homo at 121 Ar royo Court, a resident discov ered smoke issuing from an abandoned well; on the same picturesque street, 195? By Ted Key an whether or not you want children. If you to have them, you may find that you are raising them alone at a time when a husband and father is most needed. If you do not have children, you may have many second thoughts about this later, when it is too late. Studies show that women in the so called May December marriages frequently complain about insecurity and jealousy in their aging husbands. You might be able to avoid this, or at least lessen it, by being aware of this possibility in advance.

Then there is the question of life expectancy. A woman normally lives several years longer than her husband, but in the May December marriage the husband is already much older. You may become a widow when you are still quite young All "Of these points are facts to be considered. These risks need not be overestimated because many of them car. be present in any marriage.

Statistically, marriages between two people of relatively the same age seem ta work out better but there are many exceptions, and your marriage might be just that! Sometimes, women attracted to older men are really lookingior the father they may never have had. Sometimes, this need for a father figure is so strong that they might not achieve happiness with a younger man unless they had had a great deal of psychiatric therapy. Jt is most important to consider some of the possible disadvantages, to be aware of them, and then to weigh them against the oositive. force of your love for this man. If you decide' to marry him, your friends and your family wiil probably learn to accept your arrangement.

Chinnm Sclinci I Htm 5rvlc WASHINGTON, D.C. One questipn that has not been resolved is whether' the President will restrict his exposure to the public as the result of the assassination attempt on. Governor Wallacfl. Says Mr. Nixon's a aj.g John "My guess is that the President will mix with the crowds just as he has in the past, probably more than less.

I think his answer to the assassination attempt came the next day when he walked into the street in front of the White House and shook hands with people who were' thexe. During the 1963' campaign I asked Mr. Nixon: "In view of the assassination of President Kennedy, do you think the presidential candidates should campaign principally on televt son or, at least, put an end to moving cut into the crowds arid shaking hands?" To this Mr. Nixon replied: "I couldn't possibly pull bact from meeting the people during a campaign. They need to get up close to rne and shake my hand and look me over to see what I'm like.

And I need to get close to them to near what they have to say." A few months afterward Robert Kennedy was assassinated. But both presidential candidates, Nixon and Humphrey, continued to plunge into crowds with their hands outstretchedand 'with neither making any apparent concession to security. Their Secret Service guards were; of course, especially watchful But it seemed ciear that the protective measures being taken would' never be enough to be fully preventative against an assassin who was willing to sacrifice his. own life in getting off one shot Both of the leading Demo cratic candidates in the current presidential race, Senators McGovern and Humphrey, have already given their campaigning answers to the attack on Mr, Wallace. They both are moving in and out of crowds and shaking hands just as if nothing had happened that might have deterred them.

Gary Hart, Senator McGovern 's campaign director, addressed himself, to this same subject before this same breakfast forum the day before Mr. Mitchell was the guest. Said Mr. "I really don't see the Wat lace" shooting affecting the campaigning in any way. The fact of the matter is that unless we isolate the candidates in a booth, there is no way of keeping them out of danger.

And we aren't going to do that. The political processes must go on. And they can't go on in a TV booth." Obviously, should candidates cower now, in the face of the assassin's threat, this would be a clear admission that Our system was not working. But what should we do? Effective gun contro! measures would doubtless greatly diminish the risk of the assassin's bullet. But such legislation isn't likely to come irtime to have an effect on this particular campaign.

In the first flush of the news of the shooting of Mr. Wallace, I came to the conclusion that we had reached the when we should expose our. a little less, at least for the remainder of the cam paign, I've since decided that confinement to the TV or radio booth would go too far. But maybe there could be speaking tours by the candidates without all this mixing and milling with the audiences. I have moved to the place where I am not certain.

But there doubtless are many people in this country who are giving the subject much thought, perhaps as puzzled as I am as to what should be done. Jun.or Editors' Quiz on WAX Sheinwold on Bridge Counting of Distribution Gives a Clue By ALFRED SHEINWOLD The average defender believes that declarer is "playing the hand," and should therefore do all the thinking. Actually, it isn't considered illegal for a defender to do some thinking of his own: Counting declarer's distribution may furnish the vital clue to the best defense. After some thought, East knew that South started with two spades, three hearts and four' cards in each of the minor suits. Amazing, dear Holmes? Elementary, Watson. The opening lead shows that West holds three cards higher than the three oF diamonds, and only one card lower. If West has five diamonds, South lias four of them. South has exactly three hearts.

He raised his partner's major suit but then went off into notrump. He wouldn't raise at all with a doubleton, and he would insist on hearts if he had four. South opened with one club even though he had four diamonds. He should have either four or five clubs. Otherwise he would have opened with one diamond.

South cannot have a singleton spade, since he has bid no trump. Therefore his six black cards must be two spades and four clubs. Correct Shift Armed with this information, East shifted .10 the three of spades. South played low. and West took the queen.

West returned a spade, and East carefully played low. South had to win with the ace of spades. As soon as South led diamonds West could take the ace of diamonds and go back to spades. The defenders thus took 'three spades and two diamonds, defeating the contract. Daily Question Partner bids one spade, and the next player passes.

His great relief, however, was short lived. When the bouncer returned, he proceeded to toss poor old Timmy out into the street, also and he landed right between Kelly and Hennessy.

And once again the melee was on. When it was over Timmy was the recipient of one heck of a beating. Limping into court, ummy sued the owner of the Four Leaf Clover for his injuries. "As a patron in his bar," Timmy complained in court, "the; 'owner had a duty to pro tect me. And he didn't do it.
