no Bacharach looks for stars, hits By MARILYN BECK HOLLYWOOD Burt Bacharach, who's been complaining of difficulty findstars who can translate his compositions into hits, has found what spectacular solution to his probla lem. He and rock star Michael McDonald of the Doobie Brothers are joining forces to write beautiful music targeted for use by the Doobies and by other rock names as well. No one's more surprised by the new arrangement than Bacharach, who, until last week, wasn't McDonald was a fan of his. They met at a party where Michael told Burt he'd admired him since McDonalds' old Del-rey's group recorded Bacharach's "There's Always Something There to Remind Me" in 1967, and that he considers musicane the greatest influences of my career. By the time the party ended, plans had been formulated for the partnership that will go into effect this fall.

Meanwhile, Burt's "Woman" LP is beginning to pick up momentum with the release of its "New York Lady" cut as a single. He's now set to score the upcoming films with Jaqueline Bisset and Maximilian Schell Love You, I Love You Not." And he's just completed composing some dozen songs with Paul Anka. Vikki Carr and Sinclair Paint Co. executive Michael Nilsson no longer have to sidestep questions as to when their long- Electric Light has touch of class By KEN PAULSON Gannett News Service ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA: "Discovery" Jet Records. Any band that scores its first big hit with a rock version of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and then grows progressively less pretensious deserves some sort of award for self-restraint.

The Electric Light Orchestra wouldn't have been blamed if it had followed the Beethoven-Berry blend of "Roll Over Beethoven" with a string of pop cantatas. Yet the band has succeeded by following the opposite route. The Electric Light Orchestra is a singles band in the most complimentary sense. Their best LP's could have been greatest hits albums for most rock outfits. Each song stands on its own, a powerful package of pop delivered in less than four minutes.

"Showdown," from On the Third Day, set the pace for ELO's hit streak. Although the single never the Top 40, it did signal Jeff Lynne's maturation as a songwriter and commercial craftsman. From that point on, ELO brought a touch of class to the popular airwaves: "Can't Get It Out of My "'Telephone Line," "Strange "Sweet Talkin' Woman," and "Evil Woman" were among recent ELO records gracing the Top 20. Just when ELO seems to have explored every gimmick, Lynne comes up with a slightly different rhythm and irresistible riff. Discovery unveils nine new songs in that tradition.

"Shine A Little Love" already has gained national attention. The lyrics take a back seat to the wave of sound pushed forward by the hyperactive disco beat. Even more impressive is "Don't Bring Me Down." ELO was formed by former members of the Move, a no-nonsense rock band known for its habit of chopping up television sets and home appliances in their stage act. ELO fell a bit short of recapturing their roots on the remake of "Do Ya" in 1977. On "Don't Bring Me Down," they eclipse the power of their early work.

The least polished track on the album, it is also the most powerful a rock attack propelled by a thundering drum beat. Still, the high points far outweigh the low, and even weak ELO is fairly listenable. "Discovery" is commercial creativity at its best. 'Boogie Wonderland' more than just pop By ROSE RIGGINS Gannett News Service EARTH WIND FIRE: "I Am" (ARC) "I Am" is explosive and ready to lift you off your feet to boogie wonderland. Earth Wind Fire's 10th album, it shows the band is still on the move upward.

This is a fine LP, both versatile and creative. "Boogie Wonderland" is the hit. But it is more than just an average pop song. The song is an exploration is of times spent at house parties and at discos, when you wanted to be disco queen or king and the spotlight just wouldn't focus on you. You wonder why and look into the mirror and it says, "Uh, Uh, baby it don't work you dance to shake the hurt." Like so many of EWF's hits, "Boogie Wonderland." is bolstered by the blazing horns that have become the group's trademak.

Teamed the talented vocal group the Emotions. EWF has created a song that will join the ranks of such past hits as "Mighty, "Getaway," "Fantasy" and In addition to dance music, Maurice White has not forgotten to include more of the love ballads he has made famous. His talents are vividly expressed through "Wait" and "After The Love is Gone." But he has yet to recapture the enchantment of the previous recording of "Love's Holiday" off the "All-n-All" album. 'Emotion' key to Chuck Mangione's live album By KAREN STEFFARO Gannett News Service CHUCK MANGIONE: "An Evening of Magic: Live at the Hollywood Bowl" If you like live albums, you'll love this two-record set. All the Chuck Mangione favorites are there and Mangione's Quartet combines magically with the the 70-piece Los Angeles Philharmonic making it something to hear.

Emotion is this album's key, for unlike a studio performance, the music is perfect, and the performance of the musicians gets better as the album progresses. Crowd applause is kept to a minimum, but the audience enthusiasm permeates the cuts and the excitement builds. The only problem with the album is that the quality sound obtainable in a studio is lacking. The song selection, however, is first rate. "Feels So Good," "Chase the Clouds "Land of Make Believe," "Hill Where the Hide." of Sanchez" and "The Day After make it an album of (our first prime listening.

The reasons they were hits upon initial release still hold true. Saturday, Aug. 25, 1979 SALINAS CALIFORNIAN-35 lets of 1 at to planned wedding will take place. Vikki tells me they slipped away quietly last Saturday and tied the knot at the a small church in the San Fernando Valley. Carr still intends to race her Jeep at the Riverside Raceway this weekend, and she and Nilsson will leave immediately after the competition for a honeymoon in Vienna.

Susan Anton, who left her husbandmanager Jack Stein in June for love of Sylvester Stallone, has now removed Stein from her professional life. They decided early this that the work arrangement just wasn't working out, what with Susan putting Sly first and career second. She turned down the lead in NBC's "'The Last Convertible" freeing the way for Deborah land the role. She's also canceled Toronto club date to be here with Stallone, who is recuperating from shoulder muscle surgery. And this week, she talked the Muriel Cigar folks into rescheduling a commercial shooting session so she could do it in L.A.

instead of New York. Bette Midler will be playing a tacky lady in "The Rose." but the studio will playing down fact (and the image she's cultivated over the years) in promotion of the film. The attitude is that Bette might have a powerful cult following, but it takes more than a cult to make a movie a hit and it would be wise to start broadening her appeal among the masses. With this in mind, Bette's going to be' doing away with her Trash with Flash look at least long enough for promotional functions intended to make "The bloom at the box office, She'll be going high style with couture clothes for both Hollywood and New York in November.
