Flagg Eric Matt Nate Ben Josh Ryan Brian Don Rick for 6:30 1993 than in on from The "official voice" of college football fans has awarded the University of Notre Dame the national championship. Association of College Football Fans president Don Harris presented Irish football coach Lou Holtz and captains Tim Ruddy, Aaron Taylor and Bryant Young with the ACFF's "National Championship" at halftime of the N.D.

basketball game with Cal State Northridge on Monday. "We feel the national championship should be decided on the football field," Harris said. "It was decided on Nov. 13 when Notre Dame defeated Florida State." The ACFF "the only national poll that gives the fans a voice" represents over 300 fans from across the country. Each Sunday during the season, ACFF members call its 800 number, give their official ID number and vote for their Top 20 Division I teams.

The weekly poll is sent out over the AP and is featured on College Football today, a syndicated television show in Los Angeles. Notre Dame received 114 first-place votes to FSU's 92. Auburn, the only undefeated team in the country, received 98 first place votes but only enough total votes to finish third in this year's poll. The sports writers (Associated Press) and coaches (USA both voted Florida State No. 1 following the Seminoles' victory over Nebraska in the Orange Bowl.

Irish still hunting for kicker Where will the next kicker for Notre Dame's football team come from? At this point, nobody's quite sure. It could be Brandon, Miss. Kevin Laird, who missed most of his senior year at Brandon High School because of an injury, is considering coming to Notre Dame this weekend for a visit. The problem is Laird, a punter and a placekicker, has already verbally committed to Clemson. Once kickers Adam Abrams and Dax Langley chose Southern Cal and Georgia, respectively, over the weekend, the Irish were out of luck in terms of kicking recruits.

That's when Laird got the call. This is a similar scenario to last year when Scott Bentley chose Florida State over Notre Dame close to signing date and the Irish had to scramble for a punter. They turned to Brian Ford of Indianapolis for help. However, Ford had already verbally committed to Vanderbilt. Ford eventually came to Notre Dame.

A pulled leg muscle kept Laird on the sidelines for all but three games of his senior season. The right-footed kicker was originally a soccer player. He averaged 40 yards a punt as a junior. His long field goal was 44 yards that season. Most of his attention came from his performance at the Dick Pierce Kicking School, which attracts the best prep kickers in the country.

Brandon is the same high school current Irish offensive lineman Will Lyell attended. Defensive tackle Travis Stroud, one of the most sought-after players of this recruiting season, will wait until 1:30 p.m. Wednesday national signing day to announce his choice of a college. Notre Dame is a strong contender, but Stroud visited Florida State this past weekend. 'He also averaged 5 made three point field goals per game, shooting over 48 percent from that range.
