MTEMMISSW f. South Bend Tribune, Sunday Aprill 1 1982 33 New rock supergroup A on strong foundation 5 I IN THE EARLY 70s, a new term first came onto the music scene. With all the incredible talent around at that time, when a group dissolved, one or two key members would jom together with key personnel of another combo to form a new band that would be labeled a supergroup. The best example that supergroups in the '80s are alive and well and living California is Asia. Combining former members of Yes, Emerson, Lake and Palmer, U.K.

and the Buggies, Asia features premiere rock talent in a new form. Asia is currently signed with Geffen Records, a growing label the industry, whose last new talent breakout was Quarterflash The group comprises Steve Howe (Yes), Carl Palmer Emerson, Lake and Palmer), Geoff Downes (Yes and the Buggies) and John Wetton (U.K.). HOWE PLAYED lead guitar for Yes for 11 years. During that time he backed up the keyboard talents of Rick Wakeman and garnered numerous awards, including Guitar Player magazines highest honor. Howe was on stage at Madison Square Garden when Yes broke Led Zepelins record for the most sell-out performances at the Garden.

Possibly the best known Howe creations are the Yes classics "Roundabout and Ive Seen All Good People. Yes went through a series of personnel changes in the late and when Rick Wakeman left the group for the second time in 1980, their demise wasnt far away. Tile reorganized Yes, featuring Howe and Downes and anothei member of the Buggies, went on tour late in 1980 only to disappoint audiences. The group finally called it quits in early 1981. At about the same time this group began to take form.

DRUMMERS DONT ordinarily receive a great deal of media attention unless of course your name happens to be Carl Palmer of Emerson, Lake and Palmer fame. His high-powered, technically precise drumming created one of the most recognizable and influential drums sounds in the history of rock music, gloats the Geffen media release. Palmers career hasnt floundered since his days with ELJ but neither has he enjoyed the praise he received playing with one of the top rock bands of the decade past. Another longtime veteran of English rock is John Wetton, who has By Joe Raymond recorded and performed live with King Crimson, Uriah lleep, Roxy Music and Wetton combines his bass playing with talents as a vocalist ASIAS DEBUT ALBUM, entitled, cleerly enough "Asia," went into production in late summer 1981 at London's Marcus Studios and -at Virgin Townhouse Studios The group spent five months working with producer Mike Stone, best known for his work with Queen, Journey and Foreigner. Nine songs are on the album, with all but one of them wntten by Howe and Downes.

What is mteresting about the tracks is the personality of each member of the other groups is reflected each song The first track may sound like Yes, the next like ELP, the next like U.K., but despite the individuality of the songwriters the sounds seem to mesh and mix well with the performers Whats equally important in making the group a success is the conciseness they have shown so far recording, songwriting and performing. HAT USED to take us eight minutes to put across, we can now do four without sacrificing any of the widescreen drama, comments John Wetton As is becoming commonplace these days with rock music a ideo casette has been created to complement the release of the album The video work was produced by lOccs Kevin Godley and Lot Creme The group is planning a tour to begin later this month and ith the help of Mike Tait, who is best known for desigmng the spectacular rotating, circular stage used by Yes, have developed a series of innovative lighting and staging effects. Asias national debut tour starts Potsdam, Y. on April 22 and OLD ROCK BANDS never die they merely undergo metamorphisis. Witness Asia (clockwise from top, Geoff Downes, Steve Howe, John Wetton and Carl Palmer), whose members formerly headed Yes, U.K., the Buggies and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

finishes on May 30 San Diego, Calif. The cross country tour includes stops in Akron, Ohio (May 10), Grand Rapids, Michigan May12), Detroit (May 13) and Chicago (May 14). TWO NEW RECORDS from Warner Brothers Records worth vour attention are Richard Pryor lave at the Sunset Strip and The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads. Pry ors album is taken from the motion picture of the same name. People who enjoy comedy records and dont have a difficult time ith Pryors coarse language will enjoy the material on this record.

My favorite bits deal with Pryors trip to Africa and the powerful anti drug message he delivers on his drug problem. Talking Heads is one of the more exciting live acts of the current rock bands This live two-record set features an mtriquing blend of hard and softer rock that especially appealing to younger fans. Springtime, summertime, dumbtime for music industry ly, with the dismal state of rock and roll this year offerings of dumb songs is far beyond my expectations Here is a list of the "Top Dumb Songs of 1982 in order of dumbness; No. I. Pac-Man Fever, Buckner and Garcia.

Currently at the No 11 position on the charts, this love song By Joe Raymond SPRING AND summertime usually bring some of the worst songs in the history of rock and roll. Who can ever forget such immortals as The Streaker orTtsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot This year is no exception. Actual to video games is only a small portion of an equally stupid album Pac Man Fever Would you buy an album featuring a series of ridiculous songs like Do the Donkey Kong, "Ode to a Cetipede or The Defender' We are talking about major dumb these songs and people are sucking it up like video games will last forever. Maybe the same people who bought pet rocks are buying this single. And are Buckner and Garcia phone number 21 times in this song.

With a lengthy list of phone numbers throughout the country Im sure Tutone's career should last forever. Who said the new songwriters arent talented? No. 3 Stars on 45 III (A Tribute to Stev le onder, Stars On. Stars on 45 already ruined all of the great Beatles tunes last year, so it seems only fair that they do the same to Continued on Page 35 taking thy album seriously? You betcha We made a dance out of Do the Donkey Kong Ode to Centipede' rs a ballad Its not a sad song its a romantic-type song," Buckner told Mary Campbell of Associated Fi ess (See story on Page 36) These are grown men talking about romantic songs to video games. Weird1 I suppose there is also the practical question that a song like this encourages youngsters and teenag ers to spend all their money on video games.

Im sure parents are disgusted that in the face of the ongoing battle against ideo games a song like this hurts any chance of convincing their children to spend their money on other things. I ai real lucky Speedy ill eat Buckner and Garcia soon. No. 2 867-5309Jenny, Tommy Tutone Tommy Tutone, one of the intellectual giants of the 1980s, wrote this piece featuring such incredible lyrics as repeating the The Crystal Gift I 1 ii 4 THE GO GOS have a topselling album, Beauty and the Beat, and a high-ranking single, "We Got the Beat.
