Monday Dallas at Philadelphia. 8 NFL injuries NEW YORK (API The National Football League iqjury re- earned an average $3,443 per week. The average NFL player in 1989 earned $280,000, or $17,500 a week over the 16-week season. The players are basing their damage claims on the negotiated wage, averaging $5,189 a week, they would have received had they been activated. Peter Nickles, attorney for the teams, said the argument that practice players should be paid the same as game players was complete nonsense.

These are fine individuals, he said, but they didnt make the team. Yablonski re-asserted the players argument that the league saved millions of dollars in 1989 by instituting the developmental squads and thus reducing the need for injured reserves as a source of practice players. Players on injured reserve receive their full negotiated salary. Several of the 13 players who testified during the trial told how they or other players on injured reserve in 1988 had the same duties as practice players in 1989, but made four or five times the money. Some said they were told to fake injuries so they could stay on the team as practice players.

Associated Press WASHINGTON An eight-person jury began deliberations Friday in a $10 million lawsuit against the NFL filed by former practlcd players claiming they were victims of an urjust wage system. The two-week trial in U.S. District Court centers on whether the 235 players in the class-action suit suffered financial injury when the NFL in 1989 fixed wages at $1,000 a week for members of developmental squads. A decision is not expected before Monday. Judge Royce Lamberth, who is presiding over the case, ruled in March fiat the 28 teams violated antitrust laws by fixing the salaries for the six-man practice teams.

Joseph Yablonski, chief lawyer for 'the players, said in his closing argument that the defense claim the practice players would have received less than $1,000 in a free market environment was nothing short of preposterous. He said that during the 1988 season no NFL player was paid less than $1,000 and that in 1989 the lowest-paid group of players rookies and those without game experience who were put on injured reserve before the season and werent eligible to play that year 76 59 80 84 COLFi Rudd.
