1 12-SALINAS CALIFORNIAN Wednesday, July 5, 1972 In the News GENEVA Secretary General Kurt Waldheim revealed Tuesday some of the details of the role he played in negotiations leading to the new agreement seeking unification between North and South Korea. Waldheim said he met last March in Vienna with North Korean spokesmen who gave him their attitude on various issues, reviewed contacts they had made with South Korea and offered proposals to be relayed to the South Koreans. Jack Anderson Jack Anderson Kurt Waldheim LOS ANGELES (UPI)-A lavish preconvention telethon, a kind of get-well card to the debt -ridden Democratic party, will include an appearance by columnist Jack Kentucky attorney John Brown, who authored the telethon idea to the party out of said Tuesday that Anderson would appear because he's one of the most "visible men in the country." He said the Washington columnist would offer a short message regarding the "saving of the two-partying system" and say that a political imbalance exists when the reigning party has "$30 million and the other is 39 million in debt." Bishop Fletcher Bishop Fletcher VATICAN CITY (UPI)-Pope Paul VI accepted the resignation Tuesday of Bishop Albert L. Fletcher of Little Rock, and named the Rt. Rev.

Msgr. Andrew J. to succeed him. Fletcher, 75, resigned because of advanced age, the Vatican said. He has served in his native Little Rock for 32 years, since 1946 as bishop.

McDonald, 48, of Savannah, presently is vicar general of Savannah. Walter McNaughy TAIPEI (UPI) American Ambassador Walter P. McNaughy said in a Fourth of July statement Tuesday that world peace depends on a continued U.S. partnership "with international friends" like Nationalist China. James Slater LONDON (UPI)-The man who put, up the money which apparently persuaded BobbyFischer to fly to Iceland for the world champion chess matches expressed dismay Teusday when he learned that Russian champion Boris Spassky would not agree to start play. "That is indeed disappointing," said James Slater, the British banker who offered to contribute an additional $125.000 to double the prize money of which the winner will get about 60 per cent. Laurel Meade WASHINGTON (UPI) -Laurel C. Meade, a native of Lafayette, has been named acting general sales manager of the Agriculture Department's Export Marketservice (EMS), Agriculture secretary Earl L. Butz said today.

Meade had been director of the oilseeds branch in the department's Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service. In the EMS post, Meade will direct the department's export promotion programs, including export credit programs under which officials hope eventually to make large new grain sales to Russia. Gunther Williams HOUSTON (UPI) Gunther Gebel-Williams, 36, said to be the highest paid circus performer in history, was clawed on his leg Monday night during a practice session. Gebel- was working in a cage on an act, for the 1973 Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey circus season involving two tigers, two horses and an elephant when the incident occurred.

Hawaii Longshore Talks Continuing HONOLULU (UPI) -Longshore negotiations resume today in Hawaii with both sides still I reported far apart in a dispute over work guarantees. A new crisis could come to a head Friday when the Hawaii stevedoring industry has warned it will reduce the guaranteed work week for neighbor island longshoremen, and alter computing methods for all dock workers. A strike deadline was lifted by the union Sunday "until there is a settlement or a complete breakdown in negotiations." At the time, ILWU regional director Robert McElrath said, "it appears a strike may be to current longshore negotiations." Sources told UPI that union negotiators are becoming impatient and are "angered" by the employers' threat over work guarantees. On Tuesday, chief industry spokesman Bernard Eilerts said the union had been Greenfield Trustees Organize Tonight GREENFIELD Trustees of Greenfield Union Elementary School District will hold their organizational meeting at 8 p.m. tonight in the school.

It will be the first board of. trustees' session for Supt. Donald Clouse who began duties in the district Monday, -presented with "detailed proposals for balancing the work opportunity to prevent skrocyketing benefit costs." He said these costs represent the total cost of longshore labor, and must be kept within realistic limits." Eilerts ended his statement with, "every increase in costs in this industry increases the cost of living in Hawaii." McElrath had no comment on the industry statement. Today's negotiations were the first scheduled since the union withdrew its strike threat after demanding wage increases and work guarantees during 15 months of sporadic talks. Flea Market Bill Passed SACRAMENTO (UPI) -A bill permitting a person who is unwittingly dragged into a legal hassle because he or she bought stolen property at a "flea market" the right to sue the merchant for damages was unanimously passed Tuesday by the Senate.

Under the proposal by Sen. George N. Zenovich, D-Fresno, the purchaser could still be prosecuted for possession of stolen property, but could bring a civil action against the merchant if the property was worth less than $200. Interim Affirmative Action Chief to Be Picked An interim director for Monterey County's affirmative action program in building trades is to be selected in a 9:30 a.m.

meeting tomorrow in the Labor Temple, 117 Pajaro St. The program has been awarded $222,000 from the U.S. Department of Labor for its first year for the recruitment and apprenticeship of minority group members 1 in the building and construction trades. Selection of an interim director is the first step toward getting release of those funds so the program can start, said Russel Hansen, secretary of the Monterey County Building and Construction Trades Council. The interim director is to be selected by an administrative committee composed of four representatives of labor, manlagement, and minorities.

He will serve for 60 to 90 days while a permanent director is selected, Hansen said. late that both the interim and permanent directors be well versed about the affirmative action plan and construction trades. Hansen said he has been informed by the Labor partment that funds for the program would be released immediately after the naming of an interim director. Some 25 minority group members already have been placed in job training slots with the construction trade unions throughout the county. Upon release of the program funds, another 10 or 15 minority members would be added.

The objective is to train and provide jobs for as many as 78 in the first year.
