I 18-SALINAS CALIFORNIAN Saturday, July 1, 1972 on Easy Sailing Chris Evert makes a backhand return against Mary Ann Eisel during their third round women's singles match at Wimbledon yesterday. Miss Eisel served up 12 double faults, nine in the first set, as she lost to Miss Evert 8-6, 8-6. (UPI) Wimbledon Action Hogan Upsets Melville, Could Challenge Evert WIMBLEDON, England (UPI)-Patti Hogan, a 22-yearold who last saw her home at La Jolla, 18 months ago, could be the girl to put the skids under the new center court darling, Chris Evert, should they meet in the quarter-finals at the 86th AllEngland lawn tennis championships. Both play today, the sixth day of the $130,858 tournament, and both are expected to win to set up their quarter-final meeting. Since then, his best cash year was 1970 when he finished eighth on the money list with $120,897. But he suffered through a dismal 1971 with a shoulder ailment that started a downward trek. That trek apparently ended Friday when Hinson, played his best round "since I remember when," carded seven birdies and a bogey to take the first-round lead in the $150,000 Cleveland Open golf tournament with a six under par 31-34-65. Hinson, 27, of Douglas, had four birdies on the front nine and three more on the back nine at the par-71, yard Tanglewcod Country Club to squeak past a charging John Jacobs, who was one stroke back at 66 moving into today's second round. Fischer Doesn't Show NEW YORK can chess master Bobby Fischer early today passed up another flight to Iceland, where his match with world champion Boris Spassky is scheduled to begin Sunday. The Icelandic Airlines flight to Reykjavik left John F. Kennedy International Airport without the 29-year-old international grand master, although an airlines spokesman said, "We had seats reserved for him in case he would show up." Fischer, however, has in the past refused to play chess or travel on the sabbath observed by his Church of God. The sabbath is kept from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

If Fischer fails to arrive in time for the match with Spassky, of the Soviet Union, he could lose his rights as a challenger to the world champion. It took years of elimination play for him to win the right to play Spassky, and months of delicate negotiations to set up the match. Fischer could still make the match if he boarded either of two Icelandic flights direct to Reykjavik scheduled to leave New York this evening. Patti is acknowledged as a great tactician. She has analyzed Miss Evert's game and feels she has the equipment to beat her now. "In a couple of years it probably will be- different, but right now Chris stays rooted to the baseline and this is my game.

With a bit more experience she'll have the confidence to come to the net and then we all had better look out," she said. BUFFALO (UPI)-Gil Perreault, star center for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League, Friday signed a multi-year contract with the club ending speculation that he would jump to the rival World Hockey Association. Olympic Team Shaping Up in Eugene holder, paced qualifiers to the discus final Friday with a throw of 211-2. It was far off his world record of 224-5 but easily the best because the field used new and strange implements. Ryun, meanwhile, looked like the Ryun of old when he jumped into the lead after 100 meters and then held off closing bids by Marcel Philippe and AAU champ Dave Wottle to win his semifinal heat in 1:47.3.

Richard Wohlhuter, the former Notre Dame star, won the other heat in a faster 1:47.2. Among those who didn't qualify for today's final from that heat were Tom Von Ruden and By JOE SARGIS EUGENE, Ore. (UPI)-The 1972 U.S. Olympic track and field team starts taking shape today with the first five finals of the trials, and among those shooting for early berths are Jim Ryun, Jay Silvester and: a whole new flock of sprinters. Finals on the day's schedule include the discus.

where Silvester still is king, the 800 meters, where Ryun is running stronger with each passing day, the triple jump, the 100 dash, where anyone could be the winner, and the 20-kilometer walk. Silvester, an Olympian in 1964 and 1968 and the world record Luzins, two of America's better half-milers. However, both are still alive in the trials because they are entered in the 1,500 meter run next week along with Ryun, Wottle and Ken Swenson. Ryun, who holds the world records for 880 yards, the mile and 1.500 meters, was as pleased as he could be with his Friday performance. "I felt good, but I really had to work hard," said Ryun." I just wanted to be in the top four, and I didn't necessarily want to win the heat.

But I got in the same place as I did in the first heat Thursday and I didn't want to wait around." The U.S. Olympic Committee 216 Ryun Wins Again Jim Ryun continued his winning ways at the round finals of the Olympic trials in Eugene, yesterday. Ryun won the 880 meter race with 1.47.3. "I hit the ball real good." Jacobs, 27, of San Diego, said he had a "very enjoyable round" despite a double bogey on his second hole and a bogey on the ninth. He rallied for eight birdies in a 35- 31-66 round using only 24 putts. Veteran George Knudson was another shot off the pace with Lewis of Warren, Ohio, and Bob rookie Mike Span 22, who made his best showing on the tour thanks to four birdies on the final six holes. Lanny Wadkins, Miller Barber, Grier Jones, Brien Allin and David Graham were at three-under-par 68's, while Bobby Nichols, George Archer, Doug Sanders, J. C.

Snead, Bob Wynn, Chuck Thorpe and Tom Weiskopf were at two-under 69. Weiskopf slammed the tour's 17th hole in one Friday when he hit a five iron shot three feet past the pin on the 196-yard seventh hole and it spun back into the cup. It was the fourth of his career and his second in Cleveland Open play, the first coming in 1966. "When congratulated Tom and asked him if he was a member of the hole-in-one club, he said the ace would send a crippled child to camp," said Hinson, who was paried with Weiskopf and Archer." "I think that was the nicest thing he could say." Giants Beat Dodgers 8-4 SAN FRANCISCO (UPI)-year. Manager Charlies Fox of the San Francisco Giants has been saying all season his young players would get better.

"When they do, watch out," he warned. The Los Angeles Dodgers were the latest victims of the Giants fuzzy-cheeked phenoms. Chris Speier, 22, Jim Howarth, 25, and Tito Fuentes, 28, hit homer to power the Giants to an 8-4 victory Friday night. It was their fifth win in the last six games. Lefthander Ron Bryant, a 25- year-old, picked up six games.

"You aren't as careful when you're ahead by six runs as you are when you have a one run lead," Bryant said. Bryant ran his string of scoreless innings to 23 2-3 before Wes Parker whacked a two-run homer in the sixth inning. "I think it was quite an accomplishment to go, that far," Bryant said. was thinking about the goose eggs." All the Dodger runs came on homers.

Chris Cannizzaro hit a two run homer in the eighth inning. Bryant struck out only one batter but he walked only two. "With the big lead, concentrated on getting the ball over. I probably should have thrown more curve balls," he said. The Giants jumped on Dodger starter Claude Osteen for five runs in the four innings he pitched.

All were the result of homers. Speier hit his ninth of the season in the first inning, Howarth hit his first major league homer with Bobby Bonds on base in the third inning, and Fuentes hit his two run shot in the fourth inning. Speier already has surpassed his homer total for the 1971 season. Englehorn Weathers Storm To Lead Women's Open MAMARONECK, N.Y. (UPI) -Shirley Englehorn weathered the storm at the Winged Foot Country Club Friday-but just barely.

Miss Englehorn, appearing the women's golf circuit for the first time in 12 months following surgery on her left ankle last July, almost had her game collapse completely on the second round of the USGA Women's Open when a heavy thunderstorm interrupted play for 95 minutes and caused her to lose her concentration. But the 30-year-old veteran, who held the lead after the first day with an even-par 72, Ruth while working for Hillerich Bradsby Friday retired from the company after a service of 49 years. James Amerison, Robert Taylor, Gerald Tinker, Marshall Dill, Herb Washington and Larry urton. Taylor clocked an eyepopping 9.9 seconds flat in winning his second round heat Friday. That would have tied the world record but Taylor, the AAU champ, was aided by an 8.5 mile per hour wind.

Among those who didn't advance in the 100 were 1968 Olympian Charlie Greene, who also shares the world record, and Delano Meriweather, the 29-year-old Boston hematologist. John Craft, third in the PanAm Games last year, paced triple jump qualifiers with a leap of 55 feet even. Highlights today include qualifying in the javelin and pole vault. HILLER RETURNS DETROIT (UPI)-John Hiller, Detroit Tigers' pitcher who was forced to retire from baseball after suffering a heart attack Jan. 11, 1971, Friday was given the "green light" by his doctor to return to the game.

Leading Batters believed that those with 161 or better would survive the cut. Immediately after the second round was over the third round got under way. Luckily for Shirley the delay also took its toll on Pam Barnett, who finished the day with a 76 and is only two strokes off the pace at 149.

Miss Barnett started the day only one stroke behind Miss Englehorn and was in good position to overtake her but she bogeyed the last three holes following the rain delay. "I got tired," admitted Pam, who spent the rain delay huddled in a hot dog shelter near the 12th hole. "It was a long wait. I got very cold and stiff. I couldn't understand why they (the officials) wouldn't let us come in to the clubhouse.

We tried to but they made us go back. I guess they thought the rain was going to end at any minute." Miss Englehorn 'and Miss Barnett will both have ample opportunity to rest up from their ordeal. They will be in the final two groups to tee-off today. Others still in contention are Betsy Cullen, Canada's Jocelyne Bourassa, and Judy Rankin at 151, and DeDe Owens, Susie Berning and Shelley Hamlin at 152. alist must take a urinalysis to determine if he has used drugs.

For Ryun, it's a tough blow, because he has been on medication since coming to Eugene to protect against a hay fever attack. "Now I won't even be able to take drugs for my allergy," said Ryun," but I have an air purifier in my room and I think I've built up my resistance. It's just one of those things." Ryun will leave the area after today's 800 final and then come back in time for the first qualifying in the 1,500 next Thursday. He is determined to represent America in both the 800 and 1.500 at Munich. Silvester was especially critical of the U.S.

Olympic Committee for making the discus throwers use a new implement in the qualifying. "If they knew they were going to pull that stunt," said Silvester, "they should have let us know earlier SO we could practice and get used to it. The discus I threw was completely new to me. As a result, my first two throws were ridiculous, like about 150 feet. It took me five throws to adjust." There was merit in Silvester's complaint because only Jay and John Powell (201) in a field of 21 cleared 200 feet.

Meanwhile, the 100 dash today shapes up as quite an event. They'll run the semifinals first with the first section made up of Norbert Payton, Mel Pender, Willie Deckard, Eddie Hart, Ray Robinson, Warren Edmonson, Steve Riddick and Harrington Jackson.
