The Santa Cruzans pounded out 11 hits last night as a St. Francis high youth, Bernie Segretto. went down to defeat. However, a couple of costly errors put the visitors in trouble early in the game. When Segretto was four and a half years old, he was a victim of polio and could not walk until his 11th birthday.

When 11, he pitched Little League baseball. Segretto pitched a fine game up until the fifth inning. The Santa Cruzans were holding a mere 3-0 lead going into that frame when they exploded for three runs and then added four more in the sixth. Winning pitcher Jerry Baptista also twirled a mighty fine game, t-specially in the fourth frame when West Valley loaded the liases and he struck out Rich Boi-tano, Joe Zarnde and Segretto in order. He whiffed eight and walked two, hitting one batter.

At the plate, Steve Smith led the barrage with 3 for4 and four rdns-battedin. He came close to putting one out of the park in the sixth when he doubled over cen-terfielder Ron Kidwell's head and ofi the wall. "In that inning. Ron Neumann bounced one off the left field wall. Smith hit his tremendous double and Marcenaro bounced one off the right field wall in back-to-back order.

Al McCommon collected 2-for-3 including a double and made a tremendous throw a la Willie Mays. His rifle shot nailed Terry Leonard at third after the West Valley first baseman had shot a drive into the practice jTamond backstop down the tisht field line. Marcenaro also got a pair of hits for the Santa Cruzans as everyone but Baptista and center-fielder Mac Morelli hit safely. the Santa Cruzans can win tonight's important encounter, they will advance to the District competition at Watsonville next Friday. Saturday and Sunday.

From there, it's on to the Regional in San Jose and then to the World Series in Springfield, 111. And who's to say whether it can be accomplished. The locals pounded 11 hits, scored 10 runs and plaved errorless ball last night. But Ed Destaillats summed things up when he said, "I hope they can keep it up." CA 3-8100 Area SF Giants Increase Lead To Rv Jack Stevenson AP Sports Writer San Francisco The San Francisco Giants today maintained their game and one-half hold on the top rung in the National league, thanks to a trio of youngsters who broke them out of a slump.

Left hander Mike McCorniick, just 20 although in his fourth major league campaign, put the St. Louis Cardinals down with six hits Wednesday night for a 61 victory. Third baseman Jimmy Davenport, in his second season with the Giants, knocked in two of the runs and scored two. Left fielder Jackie Brandt, in his first full season since returning from military service, collected two hits and scored two runs. Both Davenport and Brandt had taken extra batting practice in the afternoon as Manager Bill Rigney's Giants battled successfully to break a three-game losing streak.

There was one bleak spot center fielder Willie Mays, hitlcss in three trips, dropped below a .300 average for the first time since the Giants moved west. If one hero had to be singled out, it would be McCormiek, the young southpaw who now has won his last five games and boosted his won lost record to 9-7 in what should be his best season in the majors. Last year he was 11-8. "He's the most mature 20-year-old pitcher I've ever seen," declared catcher Hobie Land-rith. "He looks like he's been up here 89 years.

He knows what he wants to do and how to do it." Mike says the big difference now is control for his fast ball. "I used to get it over only about once in five pitches although I had control of my curve," he explained. "Last night the fast ball was my 'out' pitch, the one they hit into the dirt."
