The San Fran SLV Pony League Tim Erickson, the first man up in the bottom of the seventh inning, hit a home run to give the Scotts Valley Cubs a 4-3 win over the Felton Cardinals in a San Lorenzo Valley Pony League game yesterday. Erickson's fete didn't stop at that, however. His team, the league leaders, collected only three hits off of Carl Henn and the Cub starting hurler had both of them. He and teammate Bruce Buckner pitched two-hit ball. F.rickson scored three runs and drove in the other for Scotts Valley.

Irons are intended for shots where accuracy rather than distance are required or for a shot Ahere the ball is lying in grass ar sand so the face of the club must get down and hit the ball up in a rather quick rise. A golfer must stand closer to the ball in playing an iron than with a wood. Make sure that the bottom of the club is squarely on the ground when one is taking the stance.

Distances depend on the individual. A number one Iron is called a driving iron and the aver-ae golfer can hit a ball 190-210 yards with this club. It is used for full shots into the wind in place of a three wood, to keep the ball low. This is a difficult club to use because of its straight face. It produces long, low shots.

A midiron or number two is an all-around club used for long shots from the fairway or sometimes from the tee. A distance of 175-190 yards can be made by the average golfer with this club. This club is used for short pitch shots or to get out of traps, over trees and so forth. This is a good club to use for back spin to hold the ball on the green. Average distance: 130 to 140 yards. The eight iron is often used to pitch shots from the fairway where the ball is in the rough or the golfer wants to get over hazards and bunkers. The average distance is from 120 to 130 yards.

The nine iron, or niblick, is often used for sand shots or shots from bad lies in the rough. The face of this club has a great deal of loft and the head is heavy enough to carry it through long and tough grass or heavy sand. The average distance is from 100-110 yards. I doubt that I have to tell vou what a putter is, but this is a club with a short shaft and a straight or nearly straight face for roUing the ball on the green. There are a great many different styles of putters.
